Magilla's years at the racetrack makes him harder to adopt because of his high prey drive, making him unsafe around small animals. Being a large, black male Greyhound also makes him harder to adopt. But, even with all of these setbacks, he found the perfect home with Bill and Jan.

00:30When a greyhound's racing career is over,
00:33it then depends kind of on the humanity, I guess,
00:36of the kennel owners, kennel operators.
00:38Some of them keep them on, hoping that maybe they'll recover
00:41from an injury and race again, or keep them for a while
00:44while they try to find homes for them.

00:59McGill's story is already a success story.
01:01He made it through his period on the track.
01:03He came out without any significant injury,
01:05and he's in great health.
01:07He's a happy dog.
01:08He's just a, yeah, he's a really sweet dog.
01:11
01:18We have a dog who's too high prey to live with cats or small animals.
01:21There are other breeds of dogs that don't like cats,
01:24but they can't catch them.
01:25Greyhounds can catch them.
01:27To hit that 45 miles per hour that they do at the track,
01:29they have to be highly motivated.

01:51Well, we knew that McGill was a perfect fit for a family
01:54because he was such a gentle dog.
01:56Great on lead.
01:57He knows how to heal.
01:58He knew how to sit.
01:59He knew how to lay down.
02:01He was well-mannered.
02:03So in every single way, he was just perfect.
02:06But he's still high prey drive,
02:07and so he still has that tendency.
02:10And when we take him for a walk,
02:11I mean, we have to be aware if there's smaller animals around.
02:14And really, it's about protecting him because he's afraid of them.
02:18And so just knowing that is the biggest part of it.

02:41She and he are perfect together,
02:43and having another dog totally calmed him out.
02:45And of course, he being here a week earlier
02:47kind of taught her the ropes of our house.
02:50
02:58Since we brought him home, he's just been an absolute joy.
03:00He's really affectionate.
03:02He's always slightly touching your leg.
03:04He's such a great family member.
