Euli the Red tailed Black Cockatoo is a star of Australia Zoo's free flight bird show and a great flier. Sometimes he likes to go on his own adventures that's why he's got a tracker attached to his tail. His favourite foods are fruits and seeds. In aboriginal stories Red Tailed Black Cockatoo are thought to be the bringer of fire. They mate for life which can be a long time over 80yrs, which is one reason they don't make good pets.

Cast Robert and Bindi Irwin.

00:00Now, these guys are pretty cool.
00:02Oh, are you showing us your hat?
00:03That's a good hat.
00:04It is. Look at his hat.
00:06Ha-ha-ha.
00:11This is the stunning Yulai, a red-tailed black cockatoo.
00:15He's actually part of our free flight bird show, isn't he?
00:19Yeah, he's really good in the show.
00:20He is. But what's really funny about him
00:24is sometimes he likes to go off and have adventures on his own.
00:27So, Robert, do you want to explain what we do
00:29to help make sure we don't lose him?
00:31Well, if you look just there, we've actually got a small tracker
00:34so that if he gets lost, we know exactly where to find him.
00:38Now, his favourite food is things like seeds and nuts.
00:42But do you know what he eats in the wild?
00:44Uh, he'll actually eat...
00:48..maybe different fruits. Is that right?
00:50Well, yeah. He eats off of the casuarina trees.
00:53Casuarina trees.
00:54Because you can see he has that beautiful big beak,
00:57which is perfectly designed for munching away
00:59at those sorts of things.
01:01They're called red-tailed black cockatoos
01:03for one very distinct reason.
01:04Do you know what that is?
01:06If you look down here, he's actually got that red on his tail.
01:10Now, in Aboriginal stories,
01:12they actually thought that fire came from their tail.
01:16Because it's that sort of, like, a fiery red colour.
01:19Now, these guys are really special
01:21because they actually mate for life.
01:23This is pretty unusual and very unique, actually.
01:27And, Robert, where are they found?
01:29Well, these guys are normally found near the coastal regions,
01:32but not normally down south.
01:34Red-tailed black cockatoos don't make very good pets, do they, Robert?
01:38No, they live a very long time.
01:40It's true. They live about 80 years.
01:43And they're very high maintenance.
01:45So you wouldn't want one of these guys as a pet.
01:48We've got birds, mammals, reptiles, you name it.
01:52So make sure you join us for the next episode.
