00:00Puppies! Is there anything more adorable?
00:06Every great dog you've ever met started life as one of these vulnerable little creatures.
00:13But have you ever paused to consider the overwhelming odds many dogs face just to survive?
00:20This is a story of one such brave and lucky family.
00:24I'm Sharon Osbourne and you're watching The Litter.
00:30In downtown Los Angeles, being a pit bull without a home is almost assuredly a death sentence.
00:39On average, 200 pit bulls are euthanized in Los Angeles County every single day.
00:50The deck is stacked against this poor girl, recently surrendered by her owner to the Central Los Angeles Animal Shelter.
00:59She's emaciated, neglected, and on top of it all, the new mother of six puppies.
01:07The puppies are almost two weeks old and just beginning to open their eyes.
01:12But with a malnourished mum and no permanent home, their future seems bleak and short.
01:20For them, to reach adulthood would take a miracle.
01:25And a miracle has arrived.
01:29A rescue group called New Leash on Life has stepped in to give a second chance to this new mum.
01:36They named her Hope.
01:39But has help arrived in time? Does a dog with her history of mistreatment have the right nurturing instincts?
01:47Can her malnourished body provide enough nutrients for her growing babies?
01:51Will Hope survive? We're about to find out.
01:56First stop is the vet. All dogs rescued by New Leash on Life get a complete check-up.
02:02The vet searches for signs of illness, including infections, parasites, and other conditions.
02:09With such fragile immune systems, even a minor cold symptom could turn into something really serious.
02:15Luckily, at this age, puppies can sleep through just about anything.
02:20Say ah!
02:23Basically, his belly button looks good. I don't feel any hernia there, and it healed. It doesn't look infected.
02:31The first interesting thing the vet notices is that all of Hope's puppies are boys.
02:38Can you imagine six boys?
02:41Mama's gonna have her paws full.
02:44Next, the puppy's weight is recorded. Everyone to the scale.
03:11Fortunately, they're all perfectly healthy.
03:15This speaks well of Hope's nurturing instincts. She is one tough mama.
03:21According to the vet, Hope is about three years old and disease-free.
03:26She is, however, severely malnourished and dangerously underweight.
03:31Any body fat she may have is being used to produce milk for her babies.
03:36Notice how her midsection is misshapen and distended.
03:41She's way too skinny to support herself, let alone six puppies.
03:46She needs food, nutrients and water.
03:50A bath wouldn't hurt either. No offence, Hope.
03:54It's a miracle these kids are in such good condition.
03:59With the check-up complete, now it's time to get the family to their new foster home.
04:12She's a sweetheart, too.
04:14Welcome to New Leash On Life in Newhall, California.
04:17Come on, guys, let's go home!
04:19Here, Hope will be able to regain her health and raise her boys under expert supervision
04:26without the risk of being put down.
04:28New Leash On Life specializes in caring for harder-to-place dogs,
04:33such as pit bulls and those with behavior issues.
04:36It's a hub of a large network of rescues, fosters, volunteers and professionals,
04:43and an ideal place for Hope to raise her babies and get them adopted once the time comes.
04:50New Leash On Life is a non-profit animal rescue primarily focusing on the rescue of dogs
04:56from city and county shelters in Los Angeles County.
04:58We try to focus on the dogs that are scheduled to be euthanized.
05:02We try to give them pretty much their last chance at life.
05:05Here, Hope will have her own little yard, an area for her puppies called a whelping box.
05:11Plenty of food, constant care and attention, and her favorite, belly rubs.
05:20Their eyes may be barely open, but surely even the puppies can see
05:25how much brighter their future looks compared with yesterday.
05:28Hope's going to sniff things out, keep her babies fed, warm and clean,
05:33and figure out the best way to raise them to be strong, successful pets.
05:41Caretakers will monitor their well-being.
05:44The webcams will broadcast a live feed of their progress around the clock.
05:49Just one last thing before the brothers can settle into their new home.
05:54Bath time!
05:58Nothing like a nice warm bath to wash away any dirt and fleas.
06:05Get used to it!
06:07Baths are going to come in very handy later on in life when you discover mud.
06:12Stop whining, the water's warm!
06:15There you go, enjoy it!
06:18You can cuddle up with your brothers afterwards.
06:21Everyone gets a bath, even our girl Hope.
06:26Chances are, a dog as neglected as Hope has never had a bath, and clearly she loves it.
06:33The fact that she's even able to trust her caretakers is a tremendous act of courage.
06:40It's as if along with fleas and dirt, the water is washing away her fear.
06:46That's it, sister, enjoy yourself!
06:49You're safe now and clean. Good girl, Hope.
06:52Hope is just going to make herself at home before settling in with her pups for the night.
07:00Welcome home, everybody.
07:03You have so much to learn and a lot to look forward to, but that journey begins tomorrow.
07:09For now, get some rest.
07:11Thank you, new leash on life, and good girl, Hope.
07:23Next time on The Litter.
07:26The puppies break the record for the most milk consumed without a cookie.
