00:00Poor Hope. It's not easy being the only source of food for six growing boys, but help is on the way.
00:20I'm Sharon Osbourne and you're watching The Litter.
00:24The puppies are nearly four weeks old now and getting bigger every day.
00:32They're ready to try their first dog food. Up till now it's been a steady diet of mother's milk.
00:40Which gives them all the naturally occurring nutrients and antibodies they need to grow up big and strong.
00:48Not that big and strong.
00:51Bruin, you can't get milk from mum's tail.
00:57When they extend their little legs like that, it means it's really delicious.
01:04But as the puppies get bigger, it becomes harder for Hope to produce enough food for them, especially with their enormous appetites.
01:13So the new Leash On Life staff will gradually introduce some specially formulated puppy food into the boys' diets while they continue to mostly get by on mum's milk.
01:28Don't completely change a puppy's diet all at once. It can lead to tummy aches.
01:34They start the kids off with a special puppy mixture. It contains puppy milk replacement formula, goat's milk and some delicious puppy chow.
01:46Using a blender makes it a similar consistency to mum's milk, so the puppies will be more likely to give it a try.
01:54The mixture provides extra hydration and nutrients a growing puppy needs, and it's easy for them to digest.
02:03Parents know it's almost impossible to get kids to try new foods. Let's see how this goes over.
02:12Mmm, delicious. Who's ready for the puppy chow smoothie?
02:18Mmm, the kids are sniffing it out.
02:24Not quite sure yet. It smells like mum's milk. It looks like mum's milk.
02:31And there they go.
02:34Puppies have been known to subscribe to the age-old convention of puppy chow.
02:40There you go, kids. It's like a milkshake that's good for you.
02:46Well, you guys are little puppy chow vacuums, aren't you?
02:56Mmm, delicious. Who's ready for the puppy chow smoothie?
03:03Mmm, delicious. Who's ready for the puppy chow smoothie?
03:10So I take it it's a yes on the whole puppy food thing. I'll make a note on that.
03:17Well done.
03:19At some point, Hope will teach these fellows some table manners. One thing at a time, I suppose.
03:26In a couple more weeks, she'll start the weaning process.
03:30Soon after that, it will be all dog food all the time for Hope's half-dozen handsome dudes.
03:38They grow up so fast.
03:41Mum's coming over to make sure you're finished.
03:45You kids are so sweet, you've even saved a little for mum.
03:52You kids must be full after inhaling all that puppy mix.
03:58What? You've got to be kidding me. You guys are still hungry? That's amazing!
04:04Oh, Hope, I know it's tough. You're so patient. Seems like they never get full.
04:16Diet is one of the most important considerations when owning a dog.
04:21You have to be consistent with feeding time and make sure you understand your specific dog's unique dietary requirements.
04:29Puppies especially need the best possible nutrient to promote healthy bones, teeth, muscle, skin, coat, vision, metabolism and proper development of bodily functions.
04:46So yeah, diet's pretty important.
04:49Make sure they get a diet specially formulated for their growth.
04:56And never feed a puppy bones, cat food, table scraps or chocolate, no matter how nicely they ask.
05:06Bruin, don't bite so hard.
05:09See, now Hope's leaving. That's what happens when you bite.
05:16I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to eat your whelping box.
05:21Bruin, it's time for you to go.
05:23See, now Hope's leaving. That's what happens when you bite.
05:30I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to eat your whelping box.
05:35Bruin, if you eat your whelping box, you're not going to have a place to live and you'll most likely suffer one heck of a tummy ache.
05:44Sam is so full he can't even get up.
05:48Looks like the puppies have a case of food coma.
05:53Sweet dreams, you kids. Glad you enjoyed your first puppy chow.
06:00Whoops, one more thing. Hope's belly rub. Good girl, Hope.
