00:00Today we're going to be setting our health goals together. You, me and your pet.
00:05Here's what you're going to need.
00:07A computer, a calendar, a scale and a new dress.
00:12Hmm, a new dress. I like where this episode is going.
00:17Let's get pet fit.
00:19Setting goals might sound really simple, but it's a great way to track your progress for you and your pet.
00:26Over 66% of all Americans and 50% of animals are either overweight or obese.
00:32Now that's an epidemic, really.
00:34So let's find out where you and your pet stand.
00:37It's one small step to step on the scale, but it's the biggest step into setting your goals.
00:42So, let's jump on, find that number down there, write it down because we're going to need it again later.
00:48Well, now you've weighed yourself, it's time to weigh your pet.
00:51Come on Alfie, on you get. Stay there.
00:54No, good boy.
00:56Oh, that's it, on the scale.
00:58Oh, no, no.
00:59Well, it's never easy getting your pet on the scale, so let's try this.
01:03Okay, so hold your dog in your arms, stand back on the scale, write down that weight and we're going to subtract it from the initial weight.
01:11Now, this might not work if you've got a giant dog, but it's the easiest way at home to weigh your pet.
01:17And if you have any other questions, then the best place to go is to your veterinarian because they can weigh them as well.
01:23Don't be intimidated by the numbers you write down.
01:25Numbers are scary when they're not put into context.
01:28Grab your computer. I know you've got one right in front of you because you're watching me online right now.
01:32And I want you to search for a BMI calculator.
01:35BMI stands for Body Mass Index and it helps you find a healthy weight range for your height.
01:41All you have to do is enter your height and your weight and it's going to show you what category you fall into.
01:47Hey Alfie.
01:48Hello.
01:49Hedgehog.
01:50We can measure you all the way down this way at least.
01:53Oh no, he's not sure about this.
01:55Keep your head nice and still.
01:57Now, BMI doesn't work for your pup, but there is a very easy way to find out if your little doggy is overweight.
02:03From a bird's eye point of view, your dog should have a nice slim waist.
02:07Ribs are easily felt with the last two visible.
02:11A good way to find out if your dog is at a healthy weight is to look at a body conditioning score which you can find online.
02:17So now that you know your weight and your ideal weight range, you can set yourself goals.
02:22And even if you fall into the right range, you can still set yourself performance goals.
02:27Schedule your exercises in a calendar.
02:29Start small and grow.
02:31Just 10-20 minutes of exercise a day is going to make you feel fantastic and you know that you're heading in the right direction.
02:38And always remember to treat yourself.
02:40You're beautiful and you know it.
02:43Make sure you check out the rest of our episodes because we've got plenty more things to keep you and your pet fit.
