01:09 And today we are at NKLA.

01:10 There are a bunch of cute puppies and kitties

01:13 and cats and dogs.

01:14 That's the grownup version of puppies and kitties,

01:16 in case you didn't know, up for adoption.

01:18 And we're gonna get to meet 'em.

01:20 Chewy, are you excited?

01:21 He said yes.

01:22 Let's go.

01:26 Look, you guys just gave each other kisses.

01:29 Oh, your paw, your paw can sit there.

01:32 German Shepherd Rescue.

01:33 Are you a German Shepherd?

01:56 Oh my gosh, and it's not a yo-yo, it's an actual dog.

02:44 So how long have you been a volunteer?

02:46 - I got involved about two and a half weeks ago.

02:48 - Oh, so very recently.

02:49 - Very recently.

02:50 - That's great.

02:51 What made you wanna volunteer?

02:52 - My dog is a rescue dog.

02:53 - That's awesome.

02:54 - And I love them and I just wanted to,

02:56 they're so lovable, how can you not, you know?

02:58 - Yeah.

02:59 - So it seemed like a good place to come

03:00 and help out and give some time.

03:01 - So you have any tips on dog walking

03:03 since you're the professional?

03:05 - Well, here at NKLA, we just wanna have positive reinforcement

03:09 when you're walking the dogs.

03:10 If they do anything good, just tell them, good job.

03:12 You guys are doing a great job walking

03:14 'cause everyone's gonna have their own way of training them

03:16 once they get them home.

03:16 - Okay, good job.

03:18 Good job at being cute.

03:20 Good job.

03:21 (Brittany laughs)

03:21 Is that good?

03:22 - Yes, excellent.

03:23 - You're like a pro now.

03:25 Gee, well this was fun.

03:49 - So who is this little girl?

03:51 - This is Freckles.

03:53 - Hi.

03:53 - And she's a little one-year-old chihuahua mix.

03:55 - Oh, she's a baby.

03:57 - She is.

03:57 - She's the puppy.

03:59 - And she is just a little sweetheart.

04:01 She just wants to sit in a lap and give kisses all day.

04:04 - I can tell.

04:05 She just wants to cuddle.

04:06 She's like, "Hi, I just wanna be your best friend."

04:09 - Freckles is up for adoption, looking for a home.

04:13 - Aw, well, I'm having a good time with this dog,

04:15 so if you guys need a pup, this one is ready.

04:20 I volunteer as tribute.

04:21 Choose me.

04:22 It's still going.

04:24 Oh, that is amazing.

04:29 Wow, this place is so cool.

04:32 So do you guys have any cats?

04:33 - Yes, let me take you to our cat condos.

04:36 We have adult cats, we have kittens,

04:39 we have teenage cats up here.

04:40 - Teenage cats?

04:41 - Yes.

04:42 - Are they directioners?

04:43 - Oh, I don't know.

04:44 Let's ask them.

04:48 Here's one of our little teen cats.

04:55 This is Ron.

04:56 - Does he like One Direction, Ron?

04:58 - Probably does.

04:59 And his little friend in there is Harry.

05:02 They're available for adoption, so.

05:05 - Wait, Ron and Harry?

05:07 - Yeah.

05:08 - Is there a Harry Potter connection?

05:09 - There may be a little bit of a theme there going on.

05:11 I think so. - Oh my gosh.

05:13 They're wizards.

05:14 - Yes, they're magical cats. - They're wizards kittens.

05:16 - We have dozens and dozens of cats here

05:18 available for adoption, so we do rely on our volunteers

05:20 to come and help us out.

05:22 - That's so cool.

05:22 - We do appreciate them a lot,

05:23 so come and volunteer and help play with some cats.

05:26 - I wanna play with Harry and Ron.

05:28 - Yeah.

05:29 - They teach me how to be a wizard.

05:30 - Wow, thank you so much, this is awesome.

05:32 - Of course, no problem.

05:34 - You said awesome like 50 million times,

05:35 but I think that's the best word to describe this place.

05:37 - I want a condo in Bel Air.

05:38 - Me too.

05:45 - So we're at NKLA Pet Adoption Center,

05:50 and I'm here with Mark.

05:51 Mark, this is Chewy.

05:52 - Hi, Chewy, how are you?

05:54 - He's doing good.

05:55 Mark, you are important.

05:56 I can tell by how shiny your shoes are.

05:58 - Yes, they're usually a dead giveaway.

05:59 - Yeah, I mean, look at this.

06:00 - Yes, absolutely.

06:01 - Shiny, so tell me about what you do

06:03 and what NKLA stands for.

06:05 - I am the executive director

06:06 for Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles,

06:09 and NKLA stands for No Kill Los Angeles.

06:11 Nationally, there's about 9,000 animals

06:13 that are killed in city shelters every day.

06:15 We really believe that if we work as a community

06:16 and band together that we can save them all.

06:19 - That's awesome.

06:19 So there are hundreds of dogs and cats here.

06:22 How do I decide which one I want?

06:24 - So we have a really cool survey that we fill out,

06:26 and that basically just goes over how comfortable you are.

06:29 Have you ever owned a pet before or that kind of pet?

06:31 Do you want a dog, do you want a cat?

06:32 You know, your lifestyle.

06:34 And then what we do is we take that information,

06:36 work with you, and then start matching you up

06:38 with some animals and seeing how it's a fit.

06:40 - Yeah, yeah.

06:41 So it's almost like Match.com, but it's NKLA style.

06:43 - I was just about to say that.

06:44 It's just like a dating website, but for your dog.

06:46 - Absolutely.

06:47 So we get to know you a little bit

06:48 and find out who's a good fit for you.

06:50 - Dang, you guys are like super high tech.

06:52 So this place is awesome.

06:53 There's so much happening.

06:54 How can other people get involved and volunteer?

06:57 - Best Friends Animal Society

06:58 and every other rescue organization

07:00 that's working towards ending the killing

07:02 of animals in shelters need help.

07:04 So most of us are non-profits, right?

07:06 So if you're kind enough to open your pockets

07:08 and open your wallets and help us financially,

07:10 that's how we stay afloat.

07:11 - That's a great way.

07:12 - Yes, we're always looking for volunteer and foster homes.

07:15 So we constantly need help walking dogs,

07:18 playing with cats, helping us do adoptions,

07:20 going to mobile events.

07:21 - Wow, walking dogs and playing with cats.

07:23 That sounds like a really awesome day.

07:25 - It is a pretty awesome day.

07:26 They're amazing, so it's a lot of fun

07:28 and it helps save lives.

07:29 - Yeah, definitely.
