Abandoned: Boyfriend left girlfriend in a foreign country with a broken arm

If the TV series “Sex in the City” is to be believed, New York City is the city of love and your Mr. or Mrs. Right is just waiting for you around the next corner.
Unfortunately, the city of love disappointed this couple from Taiwan who traveled there in late May of this year.
While in New York, the two had a heated argument and the boyfriend shoved his girlfriend to the ground. She broke her left forearm and disregarding her injury her boyfriend left, not just her but the country!
She was checked into a Queens hospital for 2 weeks and then returned to Taiwan on her own, upon her return she sued him for injury related damages, including the cost of her medical care, rehab and loss of 6 months of pay as she was unable to work because of her injury. She has asked for a total of US$23,000. After all, she was uninsured when she was injured in the US.
Her boyfriend says the total claim is outrageous and he should not have to pay what medical care in the US would cost, since Taiwan’s medical care is cheaper than the US’s--whether or not the individual is insured.
A judge in Kaohsiung charged the boyfriend with assault and demanded that he pay her US$10,000.
I imagine this wasn’t the outcome either one of the expected when they packed their bags for New York.
