Millions march in Paris: Largest demonstration in French history in wake of terrorist attack
  • 9 years ago
The largest demonstration in French history took place Sunday afternoon in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

French media outlets estimate that more than 3 million people in total marched in various cities across France, with 1.6 million people on the streets of Paris alone.

“I am Charlie” was a common theme among demonstrator’s signs. “They wanted to bring France to its knees. Instead they brought Europe to its feet,” another sign read.

Supporters gathered in major cities all over the world. Forty-four foreign leaders made the trip to Paris to march in solidarity alongside French citizens.

French President Francois Hollande embraced German Chancellor Angela Merkel when she arrived. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu participated, as did Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

British Prime Minister David Cameron also took part in the street demonstration, which included people of all ages, races and religions.

The leaders led the rally down Boulevard Voltaire, where they paused in silence while the names of the 17 victims were read over a loudspeaker.
