Third World travel! New York to build elevated airtrain to La Guardia

An elevated train link will be built between La Guardia Airport and New York City, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in a breakfast speech on Tuesday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed building a 1.5 mile elevated train connecting La Guardia Airport to the number 7 subway. The new line will end at Willets Point station, which will be expanded under the current proposal.

Construction of the new link is expected to take five years, although Cuomo did not mention a start date for construction.

The new Airtrain comes with a $450 million price tag. Cuomo said the project would be funded by ‘existing sources’, including the budgets of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Part of the funding will also come from settlements with Wall Street banks, according to the New York Times.

Meanwhile, renovations at La Guardia Airport, which Vice President Joseph Biden likened to a third world country, are expected to be completed by 2021.
