On Wednesday, a malnourished male sea lion was discovered in San Francisco. Somehow he had managed to trek from the ocean across a busy highway towards Lake Merced, a journey that's estimated to be about a quarter of a mile.

National Park Service Ranger Matt Wallat rescued him after a pair of Good Samaritans spotted the sea lion moving across the highway and used their own cars to prevent him from being hit by other motorists.

Matt assisted them in the efforts and they worked together to get the "combative" sea lion in a plastic tote. Once that was done, Matt transported him to the Marine Mammal Center.

He was given the name of Persevero and workers discovered he isn't a pup even though his size would indicate otherwise. He is actually a yearling that is severely underweight.
