The wife of the former mayor of Iguala, Mexico has now been formally arrested in connection with the abduction and possible murder of 43 students.

The students went missing in September from the southwestern town after clashing with police.

Mexican authorities say Maria de Los Angeles Pineda Villa and her husband are the possible masterminds in the case.

The couple went on the run but were arrested in November in Mexico City.

An official from the Mexican Attorney General's office said on Monday a federal judge issued an arrest warrant for the wife and she has been transferred to a high security prsion in western Mexico.
