Mexican mayor suspected in abduction of 43 students captured

A fugitive former Mexican mayor and his wife were captured from this house in a Mexico City neighborhood on Tuesday.

Jose Luis Abarca, former mayor of Iguala and his wife Maria de los Angeles Pineda are suspected to be the masterminds behind the abduction of 43 trainee teachers in September.

Four members of a drug gang, also from Iguala ,and dozens of officers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the disappearances .

Some hope the mayor's arrest will shed light on the whereabouts of the missing students.

SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) FATHER OF MISSING STUDENT, FELIPE DE LA CRUZ, SAYING:

"All of us parents heard about the news at dawn. We want to say it's something that cheers us up a bit because we know this was the missing piece. If the federal authorities have completed the jigsaw puzzle, then this means we are closer to finding the students. What happens after they have given their statements, will lead us to where they are."
