00:30Hi, we're here at the car show at Bob's Big Boy in Burbank.
00:55Every Friday people bring their cars and showcase what they got.
00:59This is a beautiful 1955 Corvette, this is a first generation Corvette, and they start
01:04off right off the bat with a fiberglass body, and in 1953 is the first year of the Corvette.
01:11They came out with a V6 engine, 53 and 54, and this is a 1955, so this is the first year
01:17of the V8.
01:18It's a really beautiful car, I really like that beautiful, shiny California orange paint.
01:23And let's see if we can have a word with the owner here, his name is George.
01:27How you doing George?
01:28How you doing?
01:29What can you tell us about this car?
01:31Well what I can tell you about this car, which makes it, it's a very rare Corvette, they
01:36only produce 700 of these cars.
01:38This is the first year of the V8 for Corvette.
01:40It has a 265 V8, has 195 horsepower, has a 4 barrel carburetor.
01:49It came standard with a power glide transmission, 2 speed.
01:52Now the only option you had in 1955 was you could have ordered it with a 3 speed.
01:57Now in 1955, 5 colors available, white, blue, the gypsy red, which this is the color of
02:04this car, they had a harvest gold, they had a green top, green carpet, yellow seats, and
02:10the copper color.
02:13So in 1953 you only had one color, it was just white with red interior, and then the
02:17second year you had 3 colors, which was white, the blue, and the red.
02:22So what makes it, this one also too, what's nice about having this car, this is the second
02:27lowest production vehicle for GM, and it makes it a very expensive car.
02:34There's 225 that are actually registered running with the registry.
02:40There's still some out there, there's still some more cars out there that haven't been
02:42registered yet, but right now there's 225 that are registered running, and that's worldwide.
02:47How long have you had this car?
02:49This car has been with me for about 14 years.
02:54This car was restored in 1970 by the second owner, had an off body restoration, and when
02:59I got it, it needed a little bit of work, it had a few little cracks and stuff, replaced
03:03some carpeting, and just minor stuff.
03:05But she's all original, there's no modifications on the car at all.
03:10She's a great car, I mean, everybody loves this car, I just have to watch her because
03:14they love knocking this car, they don't believe it's fiberglass.
03:18Okay, on the California plates, you notice the front plate said 1951.
03:23Well, back, what they used to do is give you, you had to register this car as a 55 car,
03:29and you needed 51 plates to register the car.
03:31DMV gave you a metal tag, which you can see right here, would give you the year, so you
03:36covered the year.
03:37So this plate, this is the last year for this plate, in 1956 they went to a smaller
03:42plate and reversed the colors, they went to yellow and black.
03:45So you'll see these tags, they go 52, 53, 54, and then 55.
04:08Here we've got a really beautiful 1966 Jaguar E-Type, it's got the 4.2 straight six, really
04:16beautiful car, I mean, it looks like, it probably looks better than it did when it left the
04:20showroom, and this is the owner of the vehicle, his name's Eric, and what can you tell us
04:25about the car and British sports cars in general?
04:27Well, the E-Type came out in 1961, it was the successor to the competition models, the
04:34C-Type and the D-Type, which dominated endurance racing in Europe in the 1950s.
04:39They had basically five Le Mans outright wins, and this was the preeminent car from the sports
04:51car revolution in America in the 1950s.
04:54A lot of the military guys building Europe after the war in the late 40s would come back
05:00with Jaguar XK120s, MGTCs, and this is just kind of the furthest development of that.
05:09Wasn't actually a competition model, although it was really raced successfully in 1961 and
05:141962, it was probably the fastest production car that you could purchase up until about
05:201963.
05:21Out of the box, 265 horsepower, it would do a top speed of 150 miles an hour, that was
05:27verified by a number of magazines, and it would do that with just a direct top gear,
05:32there was no overdrive, it was just a straight-four speed.
05:36Typically it would do about 14.9 in the quarter mile, zero to 60 times, so around six and
05:41a half to seven seconds.
05:45How long have you had this car?
05:47I've had it for about six years, took me about 14 years to save up for it.
05:54Did you restore it yourself, or you bought it in this beautiful condition?
05:57No, I finished the restoration about 18 months ago, and it was a respectable car when I bought
06:03it, it had come out of an 18 year storage, and kind of resurrected out of that, it was
06:08kind of an offensive shade of pimp gold at the time, probably painted that color in the
06:13early 70s.
06:14Yeah, that's a much better color for it, it really stands out in this beautiful silver.
06:27This is a 1969 Oldsmobile, it's a Hurst Oldsmobile, it's only one out of 914 made, Hurst was a
06:37company modifying Oldsmobiles back in high performance days, and here we have the owner,
06:42his name is Ed, and Ed, what can you tell us about this car?
06:45Hi Mike, Mike, yes, it's a 1969 Hurst Olds, this is a 455 cubic inch, with a modified
06:53turbo 400, by modified they had a shift kit, this was a 323 rear axle, air conditioned
07:01car, they made 914 of these cars, and these were all built in Lansing, Michigan, they
07:07came straight out of the Oldsmobile factory, and then shipped a couple of miles up the
07:12street to Demer Engineering, and at Demer Engineering, they continued the construction
07:19of the car, by adding the scoop, the custom mirrors that you see, the chrome 15 inch
07:25wheels, and the custom striping on the gold, and the black pin striping with the car.
07:35These engines, these 455 engines were police motors, and actually, these cars were not
07:42supposed to come out with anything larger than a 400 cubic inch, but seeing that Oldsmobile
07:47wanted to do some competing with many of the muscle cars, like the Chevrolet, and the
07:54Pontiac GTO, they actually, these cars out with a 455 under the hood, there was a rule
08:00back then that you couldn't have anything on an intermediate larger than 400 cubic inches.
08:06This car is a pretty mild high option car, it has air conditioning, tilt steering, AMFM
08:14cassette, and power front disc brakes. Some of these cars came with even cruise control,
08:22power antenna, and power seats.
08:26This is a 1962 Vauxhall, it's a right hand drive, it's a British car, and here we have
08:33the owner, his name is Mike, and Mike, what can you tell us about this vehicle?
08:37This is a, as you say, a 1962 Vauxhall Cresta, Friary Estate Wagon, it is the only one outside
08:46of Great Britain, there are 10 left in Great Britain of its type, so it is very rare.
08:52How many were originally produced, do you know?
08:54172.
08:55Very rare car.
08:58Yes, in the station wagon, there are some sedans, there are three I know of in the United
09:05States, I have one of those.
09:10Of course I've got a large collection of other cars as well.
09:13Now the Vauxhall, these were kind of top of the line, if you will, the executive car for
09:21the country, driven by royalty, and of course could cruise quite comfortably at 80 mile
09:31an hour all day long on the roads in France.
09:35It was widely used for going from England down to the south of France, or down to Italy,
09:43also up into the mountains in Switzerland for skiing, etc.
09:49And it was a luxury car in comparison to others, and of course you note the Ameriling, you
09:58know, since it is built by GM.
09:59As far as I know, Vauxhall is part of GM, but they are made in Germany, is that right?
10:06No, Vauxhall is made in Great Britain, Opel in Germany, and they produce the Holden in
10:13Australia.
10:18General Motors is around the world, the Vauxhall is particular to Great Britain, and in fact
10:25was not produced in Australia, ironically.
10:29Never found its way to South Africa, or a few of them did, and a few of these were sold
10:34over here during the late 1950s and early 1960s as well, but the U.S. was more conversant
10:42with the Vauxhall Victor, which was a smaller station wagon and a smaller sedan as well.
10:50Yeah, very interesting car, it's nice to see somebody having this car, especially something
10:56that's so rare and so interesting, so thank you very much for talking to us today.
11:02Thank you for visiting with us.
11:04Nice meeting you.
11:08There's muscle cars, there's trucks.
11:11The Chevy El Camino is something in between, it's really a truck, but then it's really
11:16a muscle car.
11:18This is a 1970 El Camino Supersport with a factory four-speed, a really nice looking
11:24engine here.
11:25It looks all original, this nice 396 turbojet, 350 horsepower.
11:31See if we can close the hood, what it's going to look like.
11:37Nice looking lines, it really looks like a Chevelle from the front, and it still has
11:41a truck bed in the back.
11:44The Sonaris orange paint, originally we heard it was a cranberry red, let's go ahead and
11:52walk around and check it out.
11:54Nice super badge.
11:56So there you have it, the Chevy's experiment on combining a truck with a muscle car, and
12:02that's what you get.
12:15This is a 1923 Ford T-Bucket Roadster, and it has a 283 Chevy engine.
12:24Very nice looking car, very unusual.
12:31Take a look at that steering wheel, it's nice how you can tell it's positioned in a totally
12:37different way than more modern cars are built.
12:46And you can definitely tell how back in those days cars were more related to horseless carriages
12:51as opposed to more modern cars of today.
13:07This is a 1962 Corvette, this is the last year of the first generation Corvette.
13:13And here's the owner James, and James what can you tell us about this car?
13:17Well I bought the car in 1971 from the original owner, I've had it ever since.
13:22It's got the original paint job on it, it wasn't automatic when I bought it, I changed
13:26it to a four speed, I have a later model four speed, a Muncie four speed in it.
13:31It's a 327, original paint job, never been painted.
13:36Yeah, it's original paint, I've just taken care of it, you know.
13:42And it's a real nice car, fun to drive, and I enjoy it very much.
13:47Excellent.
13:48Yeah, the year after 1962 was when the second generation Corvette, the 63 Stingray came
13:55out, and it was a totally different car with the pop-up headlights, and this is the last
14:00year of the first generation, which started in 1953.
14:08It's nice to see that somebody still has the original paint on a vehicle, it's a little
14:11unusual, but it's in very good shape.
14:15Yeah, I hate to paint it, it's got a few chips in it here and there, but generally it looks
14:20pretty good, you know.
14:22Sure does.
14:23And I just thought, well you know, I might paint it, and my friends all said no, don't
14:27paint it, it's got the original paint, so I just try and keep it up the best I can,
14:32you know.
14:33And I've had some things done to it, of course the drivetrain's been rebuilt, and it's been
14:38bored out and all that, but it's in good shape, you know, the drivetrain's all been redone.
14:46So I had the chrome redone in the front and things like that, but it's basically pretty
14:52much, you know, other than the change in the 4-speed.
14:56Okay, well thank you very much, it's a beautiful car.
14:59Thank you very much, appreciate it.
15:01Take care.
15:02Okay.
15:03Definitely a nice vehicle, let's see what else we got here.
15:08This is a 1965 Ford Mustang, it's a fastback 2 plus 2.
15:13The car's called a Wimbledon White, and this car is somewhat rare because of the rally
15:19package that it has, which means that the vehicle included a tachometer and a clock,
15:25which is kind of unusual for this vehicle.
15:27It's also a California car, it was built in the Oakland factory.
15:33It's got a 289 V8 under the hood with a 4-barrel, and it is a 2-speed automatic.
15:38Let's take a look at that engine, that 289.
15:43Nice looking condition.
15:49It has that chrome air filter intake.
15:59Nice looking chrome wheels on the vehicle.
16:02I really like the fastback models of the Ford Mustang.
16:06Very nice looking car.
16:07Well, let's go ahead and see what else is out here tonight.
16:18Here's another high performance, also built from the muscle car era.
16:22This 442 convertible, and it does have a 400 engine, which is the biggest engine size that
16:30manufacturers were allowed to make at the time.
16:36Here we have a nice classic historic vehicle, let's check it out.
16:39Looks like it's probably from the 1930s.
16:42It looks like it might be a Chevrolet, it says Royce Motor Meter, it could be a Royce
16:51Motor Meter.
17:12This is one of my favorite cars here, this is a second generation Corvette.
17:21This is a 1963, which is the first year of the second generation Corvettes, and like
17:28all Corvettes, it's made out of fiberglass, and this is the first generation that had
17:33the pop-up headlights, as you can see.
17:36It's a nice white car, with a burgundy interior, and the engine in this is a 327.
17:45Okay, this is a 1946 Australian Ford Ute, and here we have the owner, his name is Hank.
17:52Hank, what can you tell us about this vehicle?
17:54Well, they started making the Ute down in Australia in 34, and you could either get
18:00it in a Roadster or a Coupe, and 38 why they made them all Coupes, but I guess it's what
18:08you might call an early runner of the Ranchero, or early version, I call it the mother of
18:15all Rancheros, but they factory built them down there.
18:20This one, I was in Australia in 1950, and I wanted one really bad, and when I could
18:26finally afford one, my wife and I brought this one up, and it's a little hot-rotted,
18:33it's got a 351 Cleveland in it, and an automatic and things, and we flamed it, but it's basically
18:43a hot-rotted stock Ute.
18:47When you say hot-rotted, what have you done to it?
18:51Well, we've got a different front end under it, different rear end under it, it's got
18:56a rack and pinion steering, it's got the 351 Cleveland, it has a C4 automatic trance in
19:02it, and we took it on the Hot Rod Power Tour back to Pontiac, Michigan, and went through
19:0914 states coming back, and drove it all over, we've had a lot of fun with it, and it's kind
19:16of unusual, a little different, and the body is a little different, but they've been making
19:22them down in Australia for a long time, but even now the early ones are getting hard to
19:28find down there, so we really enjoy it, and fortunately I have a wife that likes to go
19:36with it and enjoy it too, so we've had a lot of fun, and we live over in Garden Grove,
19:43and we came over here tonight just because she likes Bob's hamburgers.
19:49Yeah, they're definitely good.
19:51But we've had a great time with the car, it's a right-hand drive, and the only problem is
19:57when your wife's with you, and she's on this side, and you want to pass some car, and you
20:02say, honey, is it clear?
20:03She says, oh no!
20:05And the car will be 20 miles down the road, but she'll say, oh no.
20:09So that's the only drawback to having the right-hand drive.
20:13My wife even has her little koala bear in there.
20:19She gets all, you've got to have this, and you've got to have that, and nobody even associates
20:25it with Australia until she goes and buys us six packs of foster beer, sets it on the
20:30hood, and then everybody says, oh, Australia!
20:34So, but, yeah, it's pretty grummy under the hood.
20:40We drive it too much to keep it clean, keep the outside clean.
20:47Well, at least you're enjoying the vehicle.
20:49We enjoy it, yeah.
20:50It's a lot of fun.
20:53Even my license plate on it says Aussie Ute was the closest we could come up to Australian
21:00Ute, but we do have the, yeah, it's a real Ute, have the real Australian license plate
21:07on the back, and I didn't even get stopped by the cops, and that's the only plate I had
21:13on it when we took it cross-country.
21:15Nobody wanted to bother with it, I guess.
21:17I guess not.
21:18It was a lot of fun, and the car is a lot of fun.
21:22This vehicle has the original Australian license plate.
21:25Yeah, that's an antique Australian plate.
21:28They don't have those anymore, but I had that plate on, and I didn't even put my California
21:33plates on it when we went on the tour back east, and we had a cop in New Mexico follow
21:39me for about 10 miles, and he kept looking at that Australian plate, and he'd pull up,
21:44and he'd look at me driving on the right side, and pretty soon he just waved and drove off.
21:49I think he figured he'd probably throw the ticket in the ocean on the way home, but we
21:54had a lot of fun with it, so it's just kind of different, and we do have the California
22:01plate on it, but we usually tuck it up under, and really haven't been bothered by it.
22:09Most of the policemen have been pretty nice and give us a thumbs-up about the car, so
22:15it's been fun.
22:18It's a nice, interesting-looking car.
22:21Well, thank you.
22:22It's unusual, and it's really fun.
22:29We're here at Fudd Rockers in Pasadena, and here we've got a first-generation Corvette.
22:32It was just a very mild, slight modification.
22:35You might not even be able to notice it, but try.
22:38Just look real hard, and you might notice a small modification to this vehicle.
22:45Any guesses?
22:47You still don't know what it is?
22:50Well, let me give you a hint.
22:54Just look at that tiny little thing sticking out of the hood.
22:57Yep, that's it.
22:59That monster.
23:05Do you think this guy does any drag racing?
23:10Here we've got a nice, blue 1956 Chevy Bel Air.
23:13It's got a 350 V8 and a four-speed.
23:15It's a manual transmission.
23:16Real nice car.
23:19We've got a bunch of teabucket roasters here tonight.
23:22This is a really beautiful example.
23:23It's a midnight blue.
23:25Really nice-looking car.
23:26Check it out, guys.
23:28What do you think about it?
23:31I think I'd like to go for a ride.
23:34Well, the owner was real nice, and he told us we can sit in the car.
23:38I think I'm just going to use the camera here as an excuse to go ahead and sit in that beautiful ride.
23:44I'll do the driving.
23:46Wow, this is really awesome.
23:48I feel like I'm on a ZZ Top video here.
23:50Oh, me too.
23:52Hi, this is Jamie.
23:53He's an artist.
23:54He draws a lot of hot rods.
23:56Hi, how are you doing?
23:57Yeah, I've been drawing cars since I was five.
23:59I have this natural ability to duplicate any picture.
24:02Each drawing takes me about six to eight hours to complete.
24:14This is a very strange-looking car.
24:16This is actually the first time I've seen something like this.
24:18It says it's a 74 Ford.
24:21It's a right-hand drive.
24:22My guess is that it's probably an Australian market car,
24:26but you can tell it had a lot of modifications done to it.
24:29It might be built in Australia.
24:31I don't know.
24:32I don't know.
24:33I don't know.
24:34I don't know.
24:35I don't know.
24:36I don't know.
24:37I don't know.
24:38I don't know.
24:39I don't know.
24:40I don't know.
24:41I don't know.
24:42It might be based on a Torino or possibly a Mustang.
24:47Very strange-looking vehicle.
24:49Obviously, with a lot of modifications,
24:51it can't come out of the factory with an engine sticking out of the hood like that.
24:56Kind of a Mad Max type of deal going.
25:01Very interesting-looking car.
25:03Right-hand drive, as you can tell.
25:06Here we have Paul, who owns this beautiful Corvette Stingray in orange.
25:10It's a big block 454.
25:12Paul, what do you want to tell us about this car?
25:16Well, I've owned this car for 28 years.
25:19It only has 67,000 original miles.
25:23I showed the car throughout Texas for about 14 years
25:27and had no competition from any original big blocks that were all original.
25:32It's definitely a nice car.
25:34And you said it has a 454, and I'm sure it sounds real crazy.
25:39I was wondering if maybe we can check out how the car sounds.
25:42Sure.
26:10Sounds like a mean machine.
26:16Any guesses?
26:17You still don't know what it is?
26:20Well, let me give you a hint.
26:25Just look at that tiny little thing sticking out of the hood.
26:28It's a big block 454.
26:30It's a big block 454.
26:32It's a big block 454.
26:34It's a big block 454.
26:36Just look at that tiny little thing sticking out of the hood.
26:39Yep, that's it.
26:41That monster.
26:47You think this guy does any back?
26:51This is definitely something that you'll like.
26:54Nice tan interior on it.
26:58Yeah, check out that engine bay.
27:00It's a huge engine bay with a huge engine.
27:02Wow, there's a lot of cool cars here.
27:03Let's go and check it out.
27:07And the front custom aerodynamic package.
27:11And I also think that the wing and the front aerodynamic package is adjustable.
27:16And like I said, the only reason they did that
27:19was because they had to sell them to the public in order to make the cars run.
27:24It's got a nice pale yellow with little black accents on it.
