Hacker Clones Politician’s Fingerprint From Photos

A hacker affiliated with the Chaos Computer Club, or CCC, is claiming that with the aid of a photo and some software they cloned the fingerprint of a German official.

A hacker affiliated with the Chaos Computer Club announced that with the aid of several photos and some software he cloned the fingerprint of a German official.

Jan Krissler, who also goes by the name ‘Starbug’, said he was able to get all of the information he needed by finding publicly available photos of the German defense minister.

None of them were carefully taken close-ups.

Rather, most were snapped from a variety of angles and distances during a press conference.

From there, Krissler used commercial software to fashion a copy of the identifying marks.

This was revealed during a presentation at the 31st Chaos Communication Congress, the annual meeting of a large European hacker organization.

After his talk, Krissler said that he was sure what he’d just revealed would result in politicians worldwide wearing gloves when addressing the public.

He’s not, however, the first person to ever clone a fingerprint.

For some time parties interested in doing such a thing have resorted to a number of means, including pulling them from phones and other frequently touched objects.

Security professionals have already deemed the type of biometric access vulnerable and are developing other ways of confirming ones identity.
