Mohammed Islam, 17, recently admitted that the story he told about making 72 million dollars on his lunch hour was a tall tale.

New York magazine recently wrote that one of their favorite things about the Big Apple was that a high school student pulled in 72 million dollars by trading stocks on his lunch hour.

It turns out that the amazing achievement they were talking about never happened.

Mohammed Islam, 17, has admitted that the story he told was a tall tale, and he is not actually worth 8 figures.

As a result of him being featured in the magazine, and subsequently The New York Post, he was asked by the The New York Observer to give an interview.

In it, Islam revealed that he and a friend had fabricated the story and no money was, in fact, made.

Trades did happen, but they were of the simulated variety.

A spokesperson for the two young men said that the news outlets should have been more stringent in checking facts.

Islam’s parents weren’t as quick to cast the blame onto others.

According to Mohammed, he’s now staying with a friend.

He said of his family’s reaction, “Honestly, my dad wanted to disown me. My mom basically said she’d never talk to me."
