Uber, the popular taxi booking service, was banned in Delhi, India following the alleged rape of a female passenger.

The victim, who is in her mid-twenties, contacted the service for a ride home from a restaurant, but says she was instead driven to a secluded area and sexually assaulted.

Police took the accused driver into custody, and an investigation has revealed that this isn’t the first time he’s been implicated in a rape.
A few years prior he faced charges for the crime as well, but the complaint was dropped after a settlement was reached.

His accuser in that instance was a taxi passenger as well.

Uber’s background checking practices have been called into question, and it’s privilege to run a business in Delhi has been revoked.

Any taxis found running on the company’s behalf are subject to enforcements of the prohibition, which range from being fined to the impounding of vehicles.

Uber’s CEO said the company is willing to "work with the government to establish clear background checks currently absent in their commercial transportation licensing programs".

He also said the company would assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice and supporting the recovery of the victim and her family.
