Venice To Ban Noisy Wheeled Suitcases

Effective in May of 2015, anyone pulling their luggage on plastic or hard wheels in Venice will face a fine of up to 500 euros or nearly 620 U.S. dollars.

Venice, Italy, with all its historic architecture and sheer beauty, is a magnet for tourists. Individuals who are planning on venturing there next year, however, may want to pay attention to new proposed baggage rules.

Effective in May of 2015, anyone pulling their luggage on plastic or hard wheels could face a fine of up to 500 euros or nearly 620 U.S. dollars. The Venetian council issued a statement explaining the ban.

It notes “The rule is designed to respond to the numerous citizens who have in recent years complained to the local council about the serious irritation caused by stuff being moved about at times of the day and night.”

Noise is one issue and in addition to that, the hard wheels also have the potential to destroy Venice’s iconic footbridges, stone walkways and marble steps. While the rule is great for most locals, it will probably be a major problem for visitors.

The city attracts more than 20 million tourists each year. Vehicles aren’t allowed on some of the streets, so that leaves a question as to how they’re going to take their often heavy luggage into hotels.

The City Commissioner has come up with a suggestion that might appease both locals and visitors. He thinks the rule presents the perfect opportunity for a luggage company to develop suitcases with soft tires that won’t damage surfaces and will roll quietly.
