Former Major League slugger Jose Canseco is credited for the many homeruns he hit, but in recent times, his finger has gotten far more attention than his career.

Well it turns out, the whole finger falling off story isn’t what it was cracked up to be. It all started when Canseco’s finger was shot while he was cleaning his gun at home.

Following the accidental shooting, he was taken to the hospital and doctors reattached the digit.

On a later date, the baseball star used Twitter to inform his fans that the affected finger had fallen off during a poker tournament.

From there, a series of seemingly bizarre Tweets followed. He posted that the finger should have been amputated as it was loose and smelled bad and he even claimed there was a video showing it falling off.

Then came the Tweets saying he was thinking about selling the detached finger and the gun involved in the mishap on eBay.

The story got quite a bit of attention, but to the surprise of some very little of it is actually true, except for the part about the shooting and hospital procedure. His finger never fell off, there was no video and of course no possibility of auctioning off the digit.

As for why it was made up, Canseco admitted to staffers at TMZ Sports that he got the idea for the prank when he spotted a fake finger in a Halloween store.
