Aspiring jihadists have been purchasing tickets for cruise ships to join extremists in the Middle East.

Reportedly, the reason why they are traveling on the luxury liners is so they can avoid the strict security checks that are conducted at airports.

The International Criminal Police Organization or Interpol is making plans to expand I-Checkit, which is a pilot program that allows airlines to compare passenger information to Interpol's records.

In the future, the organization wants that program to include cruise lines, hotels, banks and all non-government operated businesses.

In recent months, bus stations and airports in Turkey have become popular passageways for jihadists who are attempting to enter Syria and Iraq.

Hundreds of alleged foreign jihadists have been deported this year after being detained at Turkish transportation hubs.

Interpol’s director of counterterrorism Pierre St Hilaire, is asking for security agencies to increase screening and information-sharing.

He explained “It's a global threat -- 15,000 fighters or more from 81 countries traveling to one specific conflict zone. In order to prevent their travel and identify them, there needs to be greater information-sharing among the region, among national security agencies.”
