00:01:12Why, we're sorry for you.
00:01:14You ain't the first one we've had to catch and hang,
00:01:16and probably won't be the last.
00:01:26Precure!
00:01:27I thought it was hell!
00:01:28We'll see, Jeff.
00:01:29It might be a hold-up.
00:01:41The cage comes through about this time of night.
00:01:44Hope to have better luck tonight, then.
00:01:52Looks like you've been held up, Charlie.
00:01:53Right you are, Sheriff.
00:01:54It's a man-hold-up.
00:01:55Did you get anything?
00:01:57Only the express box with 5,000 in it.
00:02:00Ben, give this man your horse.
00:02:01All right.
00:02:06He disappeared right over that slope.
00:02:28♪
00:02:56Better look in the barn,
00:02:57and see if there's a horse that needs a rubdown.
00:03:27Sorry to bother you, miss,
00:03:29but there's been a hold-up,
00:03:30and we followed the robber to this ranch.
00:03:33You better put that down, son.
00:03:35Luke told me to take care of Luke while he was gone,
00:03:38and I'm a-doin' of it!
00:03:40Who's Luke?
00:03:41He's my big brother.
00:03:43Where'd he go?
00:03:44He rode up to Box Canyon.
00:03:46One of our cows are sick.
00:03:47Sheriff?
00:03:50Here's the neck piece he wore.
00:03:52Found it down back of the krill.
00:03:55Son?
00:03:57When did you leave Mexico?
00:03:59About two months ago.
00:04:01Say, how did you know we'd been in Mexico?
00:04:05Why, it's a Mexican scarf.
00:04:10Charlie, ride up Box Canyon.
00:04:13If you find anybody, bring them in.
00:04:15Sheriff!
00:04:18It wasn't my brother.
00:04:22It wasn't my brother.
00:04:24He wouldn't do anything wrong.
00:04:37Howdy, Sheriff!
00:04:38He did a damn thing!
00:04:39Just heard about the robbery!
00:04:41They say he got 5,000.
00:04:43We're gonna catch him and get him in a poker game!
00:04:51Hello, Ruth.
00:04:54Sheriff, you're wasting your time here.
00:04:57These folks are friends of mine.
00:05:00Is that so?
00:05:02Well, this evidence we found
00:05:04don't look as if I'm wasting my time.
00:05:07Well, Charlie, take a look around.
00:05:10That road agent may have left something more behind besides this.
00:05:13All right.
00:05:15Do you mind if I look around a bit, miss?
00:05:22Ruth.
00:05:24I thought I told you never to come here again.
00:05:27But I want to be your friend.
00:05:52Well, we got him, Sheriff.
00:05:54Luke! Luke!
00:05:56We got the express box, too, but it's empty.
00:05:59You didn't do it, did you, Luke?
00:06:01Did you?
00:06:03There, there. Now don't cry, Bobby.
00:06:05Remember, you're a little man.
00:06:08Don't worry, Ruth. It'll be all right.
00:06:11How do you know it'll be all right?
00:06:13If you didn't rob the stage,
00:06:15how come this scarf was found in your corral?
00:06:19Well, that's easy.
00:06:21It was placed there to throw suspicion on to me.
00:06:24Maybe.
00:06:26What about this express box?
00:06:28I didn't have it.
00:06:30Your boys found it in the canyon.
00:06:32Yeah, and we found you riding away from it, you thief.
00:06:35Take that back, you liar!
00:06:37Wait a minute, son.
00:06:39That temper of yours won't do you any good.
00:06:42You're right.
00:06:45That temper of yours won't do you any good.
00:06:48Charlie, you stay here with the rest of the boys.
00:06:51That money's around here somewhere.
00:06:53$5,000 and 20s.
00:06:55You can look until you're blind.
00:06:57You won't find any part of it.
00:06:59Get on your horse. You're going with me.
00:07:07Luke!
00:07:09Give me a moment to dress, please.
00:07:11I want to go with him.
00:07:13Me too.
00:07:15All right.
00:07:43Come on.
00:08:14Good-looking gun you got there, Clary.
00:08:16Yeah.
00:08:43A hundred and new 20s.
00:08:45Yeah, that's part of the loot.
00:09:02Luke!
00:09:05Luke!
00:09:13Luke!
00:09:15Luke!
00:09:41Sheriff Barney?
00:09:43Well, well, well, I'm proud about you.
00:09:45Last time I was talking to the governor, he says to me,
00:09:47Consular, he says the best man in our county
00:09:49is our own Sheriff Barney.
00:09:51The man who broke up the Black Horse Gang single-handed.
00:09:54Try this cigar and tell me how you like it.
00:09:57Glad you like it.
00:09:59I'm not a smoker myself, but I sure like the smell of a good cigar.
00:10:02And that ain't all I got for you.
00:10:04The governor told me about a book he owns.
00:10:07You see, I got a whole few copies of those myself, Sheriff.
00:10:10Now, if there ain't more law in that book than I know myself,
00:10:13I'll serve 30 days in your chain gang.
00:10:18A ranchman's own lawyer.
00:10:21Good.
00:10:39Ah, you ornery cuss, what's the matter with you?
00:10:43I've seen you someplace before, haven't I?
00:10:49I remember you.
00:10:54Being obliged to account for every one of these reduced copies,
00:10:56I'll have to ask you to sign a receipt.
00:11:07Have you a match?
00:11:10Have you a match, Sheriff?
00:11:12Goodbye, Counselor.
00:11:14You know, a gent never passes up the chance to say thank you.
00:11:18Why, hello, Doc.
00:11:20Ah, you must be mistaken. I'm not a doctor.
00:11:30Oh, that's funny.
00:11:32The last time he was here, he called himself an M.D.
00:11:38You're selling some kind of a book called Any Man's Doctor.
00:11:41What?
00:11:48The ranchman's own lawyer.
00:11:53Matt, don't you know that that book will ruin more sheriffs
00:11:57than all the bad men in the West?
00:12:00How come?
00:12:02Well, you know when two men disagree around here,
00:12:05they shoot it out.
00:12:07Yeah, that's right.
00:12:09If the winner's justified, we make him a deputy.
00:12:12If he's wrong, we hang him.
00:12:17Just you let that book get circulated in this country,
00:12:20every man's gonna think he's a lawyer.
00:12:23Hundreds of papers for you and I to serve,
00:12:26thousands of people drug in to court.
00:12:30Nothing but work.
00:12:32Good times for you and I will be gone forever.
00:12:38Well, the evidence in this case proves that the drinks are on me.
00:12:52Come on.
00:12:57Look at her. She contains the legal wisdom of all the ages.
00:13:00Compressed into a volume no bigger than the bottle in your hip pocket.
00:13:04In all my years of experience at the bar,
00:13:07I have found this book absolutely indispensable.
00:13:09It's helped me to defend men accused of murder, robbery and wrestling.
00:13:13Even ghillie men have escaped the gallows and saved their lives through this book.
00:13:16Suppose I was accused of murder tomorrow, even tonight.
00:13:19You can never tell when your life might be saved by the ranchman's own lawyer.
00:13:25How much is it?
00:13:26How much is room and board?
00:13:27Ten a week.
00:13:29Put me down for three weeks paid in advance, the book's yours.
00:13:34All right.
00:13:49Howdy, Ted.
00:13:59Please, sir, where's the counselor?
00:14:01Well, he was just here a minute ago.
00:14:03Reckon he's going to the bar.
00:14:05Just take a seat over there and wait.
00:14:21Bobby!
00:14:23Take a look, gentlemen, take a look!
00:14:25Matt, you better do something.
00:14:27Howdy, Sheriff, how's my friend?
00:14:29Can I set him up for you?
00:14:30I'll tell you what you can do for me.
00:14:32You can take your worthless book and get out of this county.
00:14:35You're no more a lawyer than my own horse.
00:14:38Sorry, Sheriff, my room and board's paid in advance.
00:14:41And I'm going to enjoy your climate whether you like it or not.
00:14:44But you ain't selling that book.
00:14:46No? Watch me.
00:14:48I'm not asking you gentlemen to take my word for it.
00:14:50I'll show you the testimonial of your own sheriff.
00:14:54I highly recommend a ranchman's own lawyer.
00:14:57It has the lifesaver to me.
00:14:59Signed, Matt Verity.
00:15:02Is that proof enough?
00:15:04How about you?
00:15:06Sure, I'll take one too.
00:15:08If you have any friends, send them around.
00:15:10I'll do it.
00:15:12And a gent never passes up the chance to say thank you.
00:15:20So long, Sheriff.
00:15:24Sheriff, it looks like the drinks are on you.
00:15:27Right here on the hat, boy.
00:15:31Mr. Counselor.
00:15:33Were you speaking to me?
00:15:35Yes, I've just got to talk to you.
00:15:38Oh, on some legal matter?
00:15:40It's about my brother, Luke.
00:15:42Oh.
00:15:45Just up in this room here.
00:15:55I suppose I ought to introduce myself first.
00:15:58I'm Ruth Avery, and this is Bobby.
00:16:00They're just the three of us.
00:16:02He's the baby.
00:16:04I'm Dan Alton.
00:16:06Won't you sit down?
00:16:14Luke's in jail.
00:16:16For highway robbery.
00:16:18I've tried to get a lawyer from the outside,
00:16:21but they all want too much money.
00:16:23I heard about you.
00:16:25Won't you help me?
00:16:27Please.
00:16:32I'm sorry, but I've been so worried.
00:16:35It's all right now.
00:16:39I'm all right.
00:16:41I must tell you about the case.
00:16:44The stagecoach was held up and robbed of $5,000.
00:16:48And the sheriff arrested my brother.
00:16:54That's...
00:16:56That's all I can tell you, Mr. Townsend.
00:17:02Won't please go to jail and talk to Luke?
00:17:05Please go now.
00:17:07Well, miss, I'm sorry. I'm not sure.
00:17:10But you must help him.
00:17:12My brother's innocent.
00:17:14They'll hang him if he's found guilty.
00:17:18It seemed like Providence sent you.
00:17:20The last moment.
00:17:22Just when we...
00:17:24When we needed you the most.
00:17:27Now, don't you worry.
00:17:29You wait right here.
00:17:31I'll go over and have a talk with your brother.
00:17:48Sid?
00:17:51Maybe...
00:17:53Maybe he won't wait a minute.
00:17:55He'll move.
00:17:56Of course he will, Bobby.
00:17:58He's a counselor.
00:18:00All right.
00:18:02That makes $1.06.
00:18:06Sorry, Leif, but I ain't got it.
00:18:08No?
00:18:09Smart fellow, that book agent.
00:18:11Hello, friends!
00:18:13Say, why do you sell him now?
00:18:15I came in to see the prisoner, Luke Avery.
00:18:17Sorry, but nobody can see him but his lawyer.
00:18:19You're looking at him right now.
00:18:21Hey, ain't you a little bit long on profession?
00:18:24Last time you was around here, you was a quack doctor.
00:18:27You must be mistaken.
00:18:29You got me mixed up with somebody else.
00:18:31No, I haven't got you mixed up.
00:18:33I like to die to the bellyache fooling around with that doctor book you sold me.
00:18:36Speaking of health, you better travel while the going's good.
00:18:40Oh, no. I'm here to see my client.
00:18:43Where are your credentials, Mr. Counselor?
00:18:46Did you ever see a lawyer pack his own diploma around with him?
00:18:50You better turn to page 19 in that line of $1,000.
00:18:59Well, Sheriff?
00:19:17Hey, Avery, there's a counselor out here to see you.
00:19:25Your sister is a retainment defender.
00:19:28My name's Alton. I'm sure glad to see you, Mr. Alton.
00:19:32Hello.
00:19:34Looks pretty bad for you, Avery.
00:19:37Oh, but you've got to get me off, sir.
00:19:41Well, I can't acquit you.
00:19:44It's going to cost you $2,000 in cash.
00:19:47Gee, I haven't got it.
00:19:50I'll sign over my rent.
00:19:53No, I want that amount in cash or you'll hang.
00:19:57I reckon I'll hang.
00:20:04Trying to get the prisoner to divvy up with the loot, eh, Mr. Lawyer?
00:20:08Nah, just a test.
00:20:11He was guilty.
00:20:13Paid the $2,000 gladly to save his neck.
00:20:16Maybe.
00:20:18But he didn't have it to pay, and as far as I'm concerned, he's proved himself innocent.
00:20:22Well, I hope you can prove it in court.
00:20:25Well, the way I have proven it wouldn't hold in any court.
00:20:29But I'll find a way that will.
00:20:31You better get busy.
00:20:33He goes on trial day after tomorrow.
00:20:36Let me show you something.
00:20:42With all this evidence, this demon looks pretty black.
00:20:46No, you don't.
00:20:48I don't trust any more counselors.
00:20:52Here's the scarf the robber was found under his door.
00:20:57And here's the empty strong box that was found near where we caught him.
00:21:03Where'd you dig up all this evidence, anyway?
00:21:06Some of my own.
00:21:08Where'd you dig up all this evidence, anyway?
00:21:10Some of my men.
00:21:12And me and Bill Clary found the $100 under Avery's front doorstep.
00:21:18Hmm.
00:21:22Well, I gotta get busy and prepare my case.
00:21:39Well, see you in court, Sheriff.
00:21:44He ain't no lawyer.
00:21:46He's smarter than a lawyer.
00:21:48Yeah?
00:21:50Well, you heard what he read on page 19.
00:21:54And if that book works like his doctor book did, we'll probably both have a pain.
00:22:09Here he comes, sis.
00:22:13I saw your brother.
00:22:16All the evidence against him looks pretty bad.
00:22:19But you'll get him free, won't you?
00:22:21I'll try.
00:22:22Who's this man, Clary? A friend of yours?
00:22:24Well, he likes me.
00:22:26But she don't like him.
00:22:27She don't?
00:22:29Did Clary ever have anything against your brother?
00:22:33Well, Luke ordered him to keep away from the house.
00:22:37Did it ever occur to you that Clary might have held up the stage?
00:22:41Why, no.
00:22:43I've got a little scheme.
00:22:45I want you to help me out.
00:22:47Sit down.
00:22:51You know, Lake, I don't enjoy hanging a man unless it's the right party.
00:22:59Well, if Luke Avery ain't the right party, who is?
00:23:04Maybe it's Bill Clary.
00:23:07You know, Clary's been sparking Avery's sister, and she turned him down.
00:23:15Maybe Clary put that money under the steps.
00:23:19Well, if he did, he's probably got the rest of the 5,000.
00:23:24Suppose we go over to Clary's place and turn it upside down.
00:23:30This book agent ain't got all of the bright ideas.
00:24:00Let's go.
00:24:31Let's go.
00:24:57Come in, Bill.
00:24:59Let me have your hat.
00:25:03Well, Ruth, why did you send for me?
00:25:06Why, I'm a witness against him.
00:25:09But if you didn't testify...
00:25:11Well, I have to. I've already been subpoenaed.
00:25:14You could go away.
00:25:16There's only one thing that would take me away from him.
00:25:19And that is?
00:25:21You.
00:25:23You go with me.
00:25:26I couldn't go away with you, Bill.
00:25:29It takes money, and we haven't any.
00:25:31Don't worry about money, Ruth. I have plenty.
00:25:35No, no. I couldn't, Bill.
00:25:38It wouldn't be fair to Luke.
00:25:40Well, if you'd rather have me testify against Luke...
00:25:44It's all right with me.
00:25:46Oh, no. No. Don't go.
00:25:49Give me time to think it over.
00:25:55Come on.
00:26:25Let's go.
00:26:46Lay, you go in the house and keep them busy while we search the barn.
00:26:56Come on.
00:27:04Open up.
00:27:06Hurry.
00:27:25Hey, Clary.
00:27:27What's the matter? Did the wind blow your light out?
00:27:40Hey, Clary. Strike a light.
00:27:49Where you at, Clary?
00:27:55Come on.
00:28:12You better come on out now, Clary.
00:28:19You better come on out now, Clary.
00:28:25You better come on out now, Clary.
00:28:28Catch him, Murph! Get him!
00:28:30Get who?
00:28:32A cowboy. I seen him through the window, and he went towards the barn.
00:28:38Get him, Murph!
00:28:40Get him!
00:28:42Get who?
00:28:44A cowboy. I seen him through the window, and he went towards the barn.
00:28:48Get him!
00:28:50Get him!
00:28:52Get him!
00:28:54Get him!
00:28:56Get him!
00:29:26Get him!
00:29:56Get him!
00:30:18Don't run it, Sheriff. We've lost him.
00:30:20Back there at the bridge.
00:30:27I'll be waiting, Ruth.
00:30:29Just pack a few things.
00:30:31I'll get you a new outfit when we get to Denver.
00:30:34Good night, Bill.
00:30:36Good night, Ruth.
00:30:57All right, Sheriff.
00:30:59How are you, Mr. Counselor?
00:31:01What are you doing out here at this time of night?
00:31:03What do you think? Preparing my case.
00:31:05Oh, yeah?
00:31:07And what are you doing out here at this time of night?
00:31:09Looking for a cowboy.
00:31:11He robbed Clary's ranch.
00:31:13And you let him get away?
00:31:15I'm not so sure he got away.
00:31:17I'm not so sure he got away.
00:31:19I'm not so sure he got away.
00:31:21I'm not so sure he got away.
00:31:23I'm not so sure he got away.
00:31:25I'm not so sure he got away.
00:31:27Oh, well, uh...
00:31:29Where did you lose him?
00:31:31Right here.
00:31:33Where I just met you.
00:31:35Well, that's funny.
00:31:37I didn't see any cowboy.
00:31:39No?
00:31:41Well, I suppose I'll have to take your word for it.
00:31:43Thanks, Sheriff.
00:31:45I guess we'll have to spend the rest of the night looking for him.
00:31:48I hate to see you lose a night's sleep.
00:31:51Well, I'm hungry.
00:31:53Guess I'll go to town and get some beans.
00:31:58Beans?
00:32:00Well, so long.
00:32:05He had the same idea we had.
00:32:08He was at Clary's.
00:32:10Let's go back and turn that place upside down.
00:32:23Okay.
00:32:53Sheriff!
00:33:24What's the matter, Clary?
00:33:26Someone's been ransacking my shack.
00:33:44Didn't lose anything of value, did you, Clary?
00:33:47No.
00:33:49It looks as though they were looking for something to eat.
00:33:53Yeah.
00:34:11Good morning, Sheriff.
00:34:13Good morning, Counselor.
00:34:15Uh, by the way, I heard you called on Bill Clary last night.
00:34:20You're not going to arrest him this morning, are you?
00:34:22Why should I?
00:34:24Oh, I thought you might have dug up some evidence last night.
00:34:27Not a scratch.
00:34:29Somebody ransacked his place.
00:34:31And I thought maybe you might have an idea who it was.
00:34:35Haven't the least idea, Sheriff.
00:34:38Well, when the time comes, I think I can lay mine on the man who done it.
00:34:43Ha, ha, ha.
00:35:13Whistling
00:35:43Whistling
00:36:13Whistling
00:36:30Say, mister, can I see my brother?
00:36:33No, son.
00:36:35I'm sorry, but you know you can't see prisoners without an order from the Sheriff.
00:36:43Whistling
00:37:13Whistling
00:37:26Well, Ruth, we sure kept Clary busy last night.
00:37:30But did you find any evidence?
00:37:32Not a scrap.
00:37:36Then Clary didn't rob the stagecoach.
00:37:39I'm still positive he did.
00:37:41That ornery Sheriff showed up and nearly caught me.
00:37:44I had to make a getaway through the window.
00:37:47Clary said he wouldn't testify against Luke.
00:37:50He'll have to if he's in the county.
00:37:54But he's going away.
00:37:56Did he tell you where he was?
00:37:59When he was with you last night?
00:38:02Yes.
00:38:06What's wrong with you, Ruth?
00:38:09You look hopeless this morning.
00:38:14I'm going away, too.
00:38:17Oh, please don't think I'm deserting Luke.
00:38:20I can't explain, but I've got to go.
00:38:25How come you and Clary are both going away at the same time?
00:38:31You are going with him, aren't you?
00:38:34I've got to go, Dan.
00:38:37I've got to help my brother.
00:38:39Ruth!
00:38:41Ruth!
00:38:43Hey, Ruth!
00:38:46Ruth!
00:38:52Where'd you get this?
00:38:53In the Sheriff's office.
00:38:55I was trying to see Luke.
00:38:57You mean tell me you stole that out of his office in broad daylight?
00:39:00Well, he keeps the place locked up at night.
00:39:03Besides, we've got to get Luke out of jail, don't we, sis?
00:39:06You're right, Bob.
00:39:08Ruth, let Clary think you're going with him tomorrow.
00:39:11When court opens in the morning, I'll have enough evidence to declare your brother.
00:39:15You little devil.
00:39:17So long.
00:39:30Gee, he's a swell lawyer.
00:39:33Ain't he, sis?
00:39:36No.
00:39:47No?
00:39:50Cover that.
00:39:53I'll hold the stakes, Doc.
00:39:56Just how do you figure to free Avery?
00:40:00You'll be surprised.
00:40:02Put that away for a minute.
00:40:06No.
00:40:15No.
00:40:27Ruth!
00:40:31Hold that!
00:40:34Whoa!
00:40:37What's the matter, Clither?
00:40:39It's a holdup.
00:40:40Step out, gents, and stretch your legs.
00:40:50Not you, ladies. Sit down and take it easy.
00:40:53Young man, I'm judge of this county, and this gentleman is the state's attorney.
00:40:58Glad to meet you, judge.
00:41:00Just drop your wallets on the ground.
00:41:03I'll take that watch, driver, and yours, too, guard.
00:41:10Much obliged.
00:41:12Don't mention it.
00:41:14Get in.
00:41:22A gent never passes up the chance to say thank you.
00:41:26Shove off, driver.
00:41:28Halt!
00:41:32Halt!
00:41:52Any of you people recognize him?
00:41:54No.
00:41:55But I'd recognize that scarf anyway, huh?
00:41:58So would I.
00:42:02Halt!
00:42:19What's the matter, Clither? What happened?
00:42:21We held up the stake post again.
00:42:24What's the matter, Charlie? What happened?
00:42:26We held up the stake post again.
00:42:28Get the boys ready to ride, ladies.
00:42:53Come on.
00:43:13Say, where have you been?
00:43:15Preparing my case. Why, what's happened?
00:43:17The stage was held up again.
00:43:19Get your horse, and I'll deputize you.
00:43:21Well, thanks. I got a big day in court tomorrow.
00:43:23So have you, Sheriff.
00:43:25Better not ride too far.
00:43:27Just a minute, counselor.
00:43:37What are you looking for?
00:43:39Beans, maybe.
00:43:45What do you mean by telling me not to ride too far?
00:43:48Oh, I just wanted you to be sure to be in court, see me acquit Luke Avery.
00:43:51Good night.
00:43:53Good morning, Ruth. Good morning, Dan.
00:44:18Did you see Clary last night? Yes.
00:44:21Did our scheme work? Yes.
00:44:23I told him I had to come to town, and he promised to wait at the house for me.
00:44:26Oh, that's great.
00:44:28Now, when we go to court, we'll send Bobby back out to the ranch to entertain him.
00:44:50Come on, now, son.
00:45:14Get your hand off that gun.
00:45:20Get the keys from Deputy, and get these hobbles off of me.
00:45:23No use trying to make a break, son.
00:45:25You better put down that gun and come along peaceful.
00:45:28If I don't get these hobbles off, I'll blow your head off.
00:45:42Come on, we'll be late for court.
00:45:44Come on, Luke.
00:45:50I can highly recommend your book now, Counselor.
00:46:05It's been a lifesaver to me.
00:46:07Sure, but it ain't gonna have much use for that gallows now.
00:46:10Oh, I don't know. Still got Luke Avery.
00:46:14One more remark like that and I'll break your neck.
00:46:18Bobby, I gotta take Luke around this one.
00:46:41You ride on back to the ranch, Bobby.
00:46:44Tell Clary Ruth we'll be back soon.
00:46:46Got it?
00:46:47I got it.
00:47:11All right, Judge.
00:47:41Don't you worry now. Everything's gonna be all right.
00:48:00Is that the cowboy you were telling me about?
00:48:03The one who pretends to be a lawyer?
00:48:10That's him.
00:48:11But he's not a bad fella.
00:48:13Maybe I've been a little too hard on him.
00:48:16Can't be too hard on anybody.
00:48:20Who makes a joke of the legal profession?
00:48:38You were in a hole up last night, weren't you?
00:48:40Yes, sir.
00:48:41And you got prejudice against road agents.
00:48:43Well, I...
00:48:44And you ain't gonna take it out on my client.
00:48:46Your Honor, I protest.
00:48:48If you allow this man to excuse everyone that's ever been in a hole up,
00:48:52we'll never get a jury.
00:48:53But we're only one man short, Your Honor.
00:48:55Objection overruled.
00:49:00Is there anybody in this courtroom who has never been held up?
00:49:09Yeah.
00:49:10I've never been held up, Your Honor.
00:49:21Young man, another smart aleck remark out of you,
00:49:25and you go to jail for contempt of court.
00:49:46Bill, Ruth said to make you comfortable.
00:49:48She'll be back soon.
00:49:50Thanks, son.
00:50:00Can I get you something else?
00:50:02No, I guess not.
00:50:08You were the guard the night Luke Avery is alleged to have held up the stagecoach.
00:50:13I am.
00:50:14Would you recognize the scarf he wore?
00:50:17You bet I would.
00:50:18Well, is this the scarf?
00:50:37Why, this was the scarf worn by the robber who held us up last night.
00:50:42Why, that's impossible, Your Honor.
00:50:44That scarf was in the custody of the sheriff last night.
00:50:47I'll be a son of a horned toad.
00:50:58Yes, sir, Leif, it is.
00:51:00It's the one the bandit wore.
00:51:02I saw it myself when he got my wallet.
00:51:05Well, then there must have been two scarves.
00:51:08Remember that, you boys in the jury box?
00:51:10Silence!
00:51:12Who's trying this case?
00:51:14Say, who's being tried anyway?
00:51:16Young man!
00:51:21Call the next witness.
00:51:26William Clary.
00:51:34Where's your witness, Sheriff?
00:51:37I don't know.
00:51:39I've had deputies looking for him everywhere.
00:51:44He can't be located.
00:51:55Oh, please, Bill.
00:51:56Please, Bill, don't go.
00:51:58Please, she'll be back soon.
00:51:59Please don't.
00:52:00She can't double-cross me.
00:52:02I'm going to town and testify.
00:52:04Please, Bill, please don't go.
00:52:06Please, Bill.
00:52:07Bill, don't.
00:52:08Please don't go.
00:52:11Bill!
00:52:19Gentlemen of the jury,
00:52:22you must find this prisoner innocent
00:52:25if you have any reasonable doubt of his guilt.
00:52:28But, Your Honor,
00:52:30if another road agent wore that same scarf,
00:52:33wouldn't that be a reasonable doubt?
00:52:35That is for you to decide.
00:52:38You will now retire.
00:52:40And consider you voted.
00:53:04Thank you, Your Honor.
00:53:35Well,
00:53:37has the jury agreed upon a verdict so soon?
00:53:40Find the prisoner not guilty
00:53:42on a reasonable doubt.
00:53:50Judge, you've done noble.
00:53:54Don't mention it.
00:53:56But a gent never forgets to say,
00:53:59Why, you're the man who held us up last night.
00:54:02Sheriff, get that man.
00:54:06Why, you're the man who held us up last night.
00:54:09Sheriff, get that man.
00:54:28Sheriff, get that man.
00:54:49Judge, he's not a road agent.
00:54:51He held up that stage to keep me from being hung.
00:54:55He saved you, all right.
00:54:58But he'd let himself in for the hanging
00:55:01you would have had.
00:55:26How are you, young man?
00:55:30None of your business. Are you crazy?
00:55:32Not so crazy.
00:55:33You run around here with a lot of stolen money
00:55:35and a posse looking for you.
00:55:37You can't bluff me.
00:55:38I don't have to bluff you.
00:55:40You think so?
00:55:41Look back.
00:55:48Get him!
00:55:49Get him!
00:56:19Get him!
00:56:20Get him!
00:56:21Get him!
00:56:22Get him!
00:56:23Get him!
00:56:24Get him!
00:56:25Get him!
00:56:26Get him!
00:56:27Get him!
00:56:28Get him!
00:56:29Get him!
00:56:30Get him!
00:56:31Get him!
00:56:32Get him!
00:56:33Get him!
00:56:34Get him!
00:56:35Get him!
00:56:36Get him!
00:56:37Get him!
00:56:38Get him!
00:56:39Get him!
00:56:40Get him!
00:56:41Get him!
00:56:42Get him!
00:56:43Get him!
00:56:44Get him!
00:56:46Get him!
00:56:47Get him!
00:56:48Get him!
00:56:49Get him!
00:56:50Get him!
00:56:51Get him!
00:56:52Get him!
00:56:53Get him!
00:56:54Get him!
00:56:55Hit him!
00:56:56Hit him!
00:56:57There's your road agent, Sheriff.
00:57:14Well, I'll be a son of a horned toad, new 20s, Matt.
00:57:27By gosh, we were right, Blake.
00:57:29You ain't the only smart man in the law business, Doc.
00:57:33Yeah, well, I caught him just in time.
00:57:36You fellas had me in a tight...
00:57:37Yes, and you're still in it.
00:57:39We hang road agents in Colorado.
00:57:42Come on, there's a nice little room waiting in my jail for you.
00:57:47Say, Doc, what is this book you read all the time?
00:58:05Did you ever read The Ranchman's Own Lawyer?
00:58:08No, sir, not to me.
00:58:11Well, this book got me in here, and it's going to get me...
00:58:23Come on out, Doc.
00:58:36Well, Counselor, let's see how smart you are at defending yourself.
00:58:55I think I'll hire myself a lawyer.
00:59:01Before you begin anything else, I want my wallet back.
00:59:05Mine also.
00:59:06Yeah, and you'd better return it.
00:59:11I don't know any more about it than you do.
00:59:16By the way, Sheriff, what do you got in that sack back there?
00:59:43My wallet.
00:59:44And mine.
00:59:45Well, I'll be a son of a horned toad.
00:59:51Sheriff, I hope you can prove where you were when the robbery took place.
00:59:55What do you mean?
00:59:57Well, you had the scarf in your custody last night.
01:00:00Today, the loot's found in your office.
01:00:03Was it you who robbed the stage, or was it Clary?
01:00:06You young scoundrel.
01:00:08You're not going to block your way out of this.
01:00:11You're going on trial for highway robbery.
01:00:14Fine.
01:00:15Then we'll try the Sheriff, too.
01:00:16The jury can take their pick.
01:00:19Everyone knows I've been trying to save Luke Avery.
01:00:21We'll hold court here and now.
01:00:25I find you guilty and sentence you to 10 years of hard labor.
01:00:31What?
01:00:32Suspended during good behavior.
01:00:40A gent never forgets to say thank you.
01:00:44So long, Judge.
01:00:46Come, come.
01:00:48Now, the bet.
01:00:51You know, the bet we made.
01:00:54Oh, yeah.
01:01:14What a lawyer that man could be.
01:01:18If he only was a lawyer.
01:01:21His clients swarm around him as though he was the head of the Supreme Court.
01:01:29Pretty girl, ain't she?
01:01:33Oh, look at that.
01:01:37Whoopee!
01:01:40For a kiss like that.
01:01:43I'd acquit Jesse James.
01:01:46Wait.
01:01:47They're coming back.
01:01:54Oh, by, uh, Judge, uh, I...
01:01:57We forgot that, uh...
01:02:00Are you a Marian, Judge?
01:02:02That depends.
01:02:04Let me see.
01:02:05Why, I'm a lawyer.
01:02:07Well, that is, I'm a ranchman, if you call that good behavior.
01:02:13But I don't seem to remember the marriage service.
01:02:16Have you a book?
01:02:18Have I a book?
01:02:21You know, the last time I was talking to the governor,
01:02:23the governor says to me,
01:02:24Counselor, he says,
01:02:25You know, the greatest judge we have in this county is our...
01:02:28He can't remember the marriage ceremony.
01:02:30So he says, Gov, I've got just the book for him.
