Little hope of finding survivors in deadly Sri Lanka landslide

A Sri Lankan official has said she doesn’t think any survivors will be found under the debris of a deadly landslide in the central village of Haldummulla.

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera estimates around a hundred people were buried. Other estimates suggest up to 192 local residents are missing, and around 150 houses were destroyed.

Soldiers and government officials conducting rescue operations say it is difficult to give a precise number as population data was lost in the three-kilometre-long landslip.

Heavy rain has heightened the threat of further mudslides, hindering rescue efforts and prompting almost 500 locals to spend the night of the landslide (October 29) in a nearby school.
