Self-driving vehicles have come very far in recent years. Audi's RS-7 concept car recently showed how impressive technology in the automotive industry really is.

The autonomous vehicle hit the Grand Prix track in Germany, where it reached a top speed of 149 miles per hour all on its own.

Over the duration of two minutes, the car completed one full lap on the track. Because of that accomplishment, Audi is referring to it as the fastest self-driving car in the entire world.

In a statement, a company board member for technical development noted “The top performance by the Audi RS-7...substantiates the skills of our development team with regard to piloted driving at Audi.”

Back in July, a driverless Audi A7 was tested on a section of highway in Tampa. During the trial it stopped twice because of sensor communication issues. It seems as though the bugs have been worked out, as the German race went off without a hitch.

3-D cameras were installed on the RS-7 to record the track. The trunk contained a computer system that compared the photos to data. GPS signals were sent to the car via Wi-Fi.

Audi is hoping to market cars employing the self-driving technology to consumers sometime within the next 5 years.
