Sloths are slow-moving creatures that spend their days in the trees of Central and South America. Last week, a C-section was performed on a sloth by veterinarians in Costa Rica.

This is the first known time the operation was performed on an animal of that kind. The trouble started when the mother fell from a tree at a hotel.

A staffer called employees at Kids Saving The Rainforest wildlife rescue clinic to inform them the sloth had fallen and was injured. Sam Trull, who works as a wildlife rescue and sanctuary manager, arrived on scene to check over the creature.

Trull quickly noticed the sloth was having seizures and that she was pregnant. The animal was taken to the clinic and given steroids over the course of three days.

Soon, she started showing signs of labor. Trull remarked “I could feel the baby kicking, which was cool. At least I knew it was still alive.”

The sloth was taken to a veterinarian where she received a general anesthetic. Her swollen bladder was drained and the womb was cut.

Trull had been able to hold the baby after the birth. Unfortunately the tiny sloth died a week after the birth due to complications. The mother also passed away shortly thereafter from a stroke.
