00:51When men are killed, not only the law of man, but the law of God is broken.
01:05Thou shalt not kill, thunders the voice of God from Mount Sinai.
01:11And thou shalt love thy neighbor, says Matthew.
01:16If I were to deliver a sermon, I would make that my text.
01:22But you are no mood for sermons.
01:25Perhaps the law of man would impress you more than the law of God.
01:30Therefore, I call upon one more fitted than I to address you.
01:36Our sheriff, Buck Gordon.
01:46Thank you, Brother Gordon.
02:04I represent the law of man.
02:08The law of God is the law of man.
02:10But that law has been abused.
02:15I've done many things in this town.
02:18I was born here.
02:20I went to school here.
02:23I fought and played with a lot of you fellas ever since we were kids together.
02:28And what I've got to say isn't to my liking.
02:33Dad Turner, you raised me as if I were your own son.
02:40And your son, Clint, is just like a brother to me.
02:50But the same man that raised me and all of you men I grew up with
02:56elected me to be sheriff of this county.
03:00And I took an oath to uphold the law.
03:05And I intend to stand by that oath.
03:12Mr. Turner, you were forcing your cattle over land that Mr. Walton leased from the government.
03:18You were trespassing.
03:23Gentlemen, the open range is a thing of the past.
03:28Mr. Walton has a perfect right to that land and nobody can take it away from him.
03:37In trying to stop you, Mr. Walton took the law in his own hands.
03:42A man was killed.
03:44It's going to stop right now.
03:47There isn't going to be any more range war.
03:51If there is, you'll have me to deal with.
03:59Now, if there's any of you got anything to say, say it now.
04:05Speak up, Turner. You've got plenty to tell him.
04:08You bet I have, Vandal.
04:16Our sheriff informs us that range war has got to stop.
04:26Just as he said, I raised him.
04:31But if that doesn't make any difference to him, it doesn't make any difference to me.
04:36But if he's going to side with a bunch of coyotes that had let my cattle starve for the lack of grazing land,
04:42then he and they are heading for trouble.
04:46And plenty of it.
04:49I only got enough grazing land for my own cattle.
04:53Well, that's mighty funny.
04:55There used to always be plenty of grazing land.
04:58Where are all the new cattle coming from?
05:00I've been buying them.
05:02I've got more cattle than you've ever seen.
05:06I'd make a bet that I've seen some of them.
05:08Take that back, Turner.
05:10No man can accuse me of rustling.
05:13Well, I'm accusing you. Hold on.
05:19I'll shoot the first man that draws.
05:25Now, gentlemen, I think we understand each other.
05:31Remember, we're in the house of God.
05:34Brethren, let us pray.
05:38Our Father, who art in heaven, send down your shining light,
05:44that it may show the dangerous path we are following,
05:48that it may show us the path of righteousness and brotherly love,
05:54of mercy and peace,
05:58that its glorious light may drive out the fog of hatred and bitterness
06:05that has been making us flounder to destruction.
06:10Amen.
06:36That speech helped out a lot, Buck.
06:38Things ought to be quiet now for a while.
06:40Maybe.
06:42Still, you better stick around and keep your eye on things.
06:46Yeah, where are you going?
06:48I'm going out to Walton Ranch. Judy Walton's all alone.
06:51Somebody ought to be with her.
06:53There's no time for a Turner to be out to the Walton Ranch.
07:05Let's go.
07:36And it looks like trouble.
07:38Turner and Walton are headed for the same saloon.
07:42Thanks.
07:50If you're headed for the saloon, I wouldn't go in there if I were you, Dad.
07:54Why not? It isn't Sunday.
07:56I've just come from what some people call a peace meeting.
07:59I'm not going to go in there.
08:01It isn't Sunday. I've just come from what some people call a peace meeting.
08:05And I don't like the taste of it.
08:07So I figured to wash it out with a drink.
08:09Any objections?
08:10None, as long as you keep the peace.
08:15Walton's in there, Dad.
08:17Yes, I know.
08:19And I've got something to tell him.
08:21And I'm going to tell him right now.
08:31Oh.
08:47Well, boys.
08:49I've been living in this country room more than 40 years.
08:52But this is the first time I ever knew Charlie to feed his liquor to a polecat.
08:58Maybe I'm doing wrong by the polecat.
09:01Never heard of one stealing land or cattle.
09:04That's enough out of you.
09:06You're inviting trouble and you're heading right for it.
09:09You've been losing cattle, so have I.
09:12But I ain't been running around accusing my neighbors.
09:15I've been hunting the rustler.
09:17Yes, and I'll make a bet you didn't have to go far.
09:20Maybe not so far as you think.
09:28Are you aiming to say that I'm the rustler?
09:30Maybe.
09:32Maybe not.
09:34Anyhow, it's somebody we all know.
09:37Truth there, Charlie.
09:39And in 24 hours, I'll tell you who he is.
09:44Looks like there's going to be some fireworks.
09:51Well, I guess you'd better go home.
09:53You better let me in on that, Walton.
09:56That's my job. Maybe it is.
09:59But when I tell you who it is, there'll be no squirming out of it.
10:05Just what do you mean by that last remark?
10:08I mean that I don't trust you or anybody that's got anything to do with you.
10:12Rustling cattle ain't nothing compared to running a man off his own property.
10:18I've been using that property for over 40 years.
10:21I don't have to fix it so as you get run out.
10:24I'm going to run you out myself.
10:26You're taking on a big job.
10:28You come on my place, and I'll shoot on sight.
10:33You better not, Dad.
10:36Put it away, Walton.
10:40You had your little drink.
10:42I'm asking you to go.
10:50Come on, men. Let's go.
10:55Move.
11:07Remember, Turner, I'm shooting on sight.
11:14Hold it.
11:15You're not leaving here till Walton is out of town.
11:24Let's go.
11:43Well, if there isn't going to be any excitement, I might as well ramble home.
11:47So long, boys.
11:48Goodbye.
11:54Goodbye.
12:00Sorry, Dad. I had to keep you apart.
12:08Buck Gordon, you've turned against your own kind.
12:13From now on, I don't know you.
12:18And you keep out of my way.
12:24Come on.
12:25Come on.
12:50Boss, we sure done a fine piece of work today.
12:53I guess that'll keep them quiet for a while.
12:56I'm not so sure of that, Jack.
12:58Old man Turner looked like he meant business.
13:00He sure did, boss.
13:02That old man was hotter than a firecracker.
13:05It's a good thing Clint wasn't in that saloon,
13:08or there'd have been fireworks as sure as shooting.
13:12Clint's out to the Walton ranch right now.
13:15And if they meet...
13:18I'll be seeing you, Jack.
13:24Come on.
13:49The only thing that counts is that we love each other.
13:52If our marriage won't settle matters, we can go away.
13:56Besides, there's plenty of open country.
13:58We can get started someplace else.
14:01Perhaps, Clint.
14:04But I hate to leave Dad like that.
14:08And I know he'll never give his consent.
14:11Well, he's got to.
14:15There he is now.
14:17Oh, Clint, let's wait.
14:23Hey.
14:25I want you and the boys to keep your eyes on them cattle.
14:28I don't want them out on the range.
14:30Right. You hear that, boys?
14:31Yes, sir.
14:32Say, Mr. Walton,
14:33why are you so particular about keeping this stock in the craft?
14:36That's the lot I bought from Biggers.
14:38I'm keeping them in till he gets here to identify him.
14:40Oh.
14:44I'm going to ask your father right now.
14:48And I won't take no chances.
14:51And I won't take no for an answer.
14:53All right.
15:06Young Clint Turner's been hanging around here quite a lot lately.
15:09I'll put a stop to that right now.
15:21What are you doing here?
15:25I've been waiting here to talk to you.
15:27What about?
15:32Judy and I are going to get married.
15:34We want your consent.
15:35You get out.
15:36Get out of here and stay out.
15:37Daddy, please listen.
15:38That means so much to us.
15:39Go to your room.
15:40Daddy, please.
15:41Judy, I want you to go to your room.
15:45I told your father I'd shoot him on sight if I saw him on my ranch.
15:48And that goes for you, too.
15:50You better get moving, father.
15:51I'll handle this.
15:52You can turn in if you want, Hank.
15:54All right, boss.
15:55Just as you say.
15:56Oh, Mr. Walden, why don't you give me a chance?
15:58I ain't giving any Turner a chance.
16:00No whelp of the Turner litter can marry my daughter.
16:05Unless it's over my dead body.
16:17That'd be one way of doing it.
16:20All right.
16:50Oh, God.
17:20Oh, God.
17:50Oh, God.
18:20Daddy.
18:44Daddy.
18:45Daddy.
18:47What is it, Miss Judy?
18:49Something's happened to Dad.
18:51Mr. Walden.
18:53Mr. Walden.
19:06Daddy.
19:07Daddy.
19:15Hey, what's all the excitement?
19:17We heard his shot.
19:18Sounded like it came from the house.
19:35What happened?
19:36Somebody shot Mr. Walden.
19:52Who did this, Judy?
19:53I don't know.
19:54Well, I do.
19:55It was Clint Turner.
19:58How do you know?
19:59I just left him, fighting with the boss.
20:04Was Clint here, Judy?
20:05Yes.
20:06But he couldn't have done it.
20:08Clint wouldn't do this.
20:09Come on, boys.
20:10We know what it was.
20:11Let's get him.
20:12Wait a minute.
20:14If there's any hanging to be done, I'll take care of it.
20:17Oh.
20:18I suppose that you would arrest your best friend to do that, eh?
20:21I'll arrest anybody who breaks the law.
20:24And I'll shoot anybody who tries to interfere.
20:27Do you understand that?
20:29All right, Mr. Sheriff.
20:31We'll give you until tomorrow morning to put Clint Turner in jail.
20:35And if you don't get him, we will.
20:37Do you understand that?
20:39That'll be just about enough out of you.
20:53Judy.
20:58You better go on upstairs.
21:01Okay.
21:13You're not going to arrest Clint, are you, bud?
21:16I'm afraid I'll have to, Judy.
21:18But why?
21:20Because he's directly accused of the murder of your father.
21:23You don't think he did it, do you?
21:25Whether I do or not, I've got to go get him, Judy.
21:30It's the toughest thing I ever had to do in my life.
21:34Don't you worry about it.
21:36Everything will be all right.
21:39You run on upstairs, Judy.
21:59Okay.
22:29Okay.
23:00I don't know whether I was right or wrong.
23:02All I know is that we're heading for a lot of trouble.
23:12Well, what do you want?
23:14I told you to stay out of here.
23:16I know you don't want me to.
23:18But I don't want you to get in my way.
23:20I don't want you to get in my way.
23:22I don't want you to get in my way.
23:24I don't want you to get in my way.
23:26I don't want you to get in my way.
23:28I know you did.
23:30But I have to see Clint.
23:32Clint ain't talking to you no more.
23:34I've got to, Dad.
23:36Dad? Nothing.
23:38Get out.
23:41Come on, Clint. I want to talk to you a minute.
23:45Can't it wait until morning, Buck?
23:47If you step outside this house, you needn't come back.
23:50I'm not going to have any son of mine in cahoots with a double-crossing dog.
23:54Whether you like it or not,
23:56I'm going to take Clint with me.
24:01Just what do you mean?
24:03Walton was killed tonight.
24:05I'm arresting Clint for the murder.
24:09You don't think I did it, do you, Buck?
24:11No, Clint.
24:13I know you didn't do it.
24:15But if I don't take you,
24:17Walton's gang will.
24:19Nobody's taking my boy.
24:25I think it's best.
24:27For who?
24:29You and your law?
24:31Why, you'd hang your best friend because you're packing a badge.
24:35But you're not going to do it this time.
24:37Get going, Clint.
24:39Take the south road and head for the border.
24:42I'll hold this double-crosser here till you get away.
24:46I'm going to make a break for it, Buck.
24:48Don't come after me.
24:55You're making a mistake.
24:57Running away will make everybody believe he's guilty.
25:00I've got to get him.
25:02You're not going to put anything over on me after what happened today,
25:06Mr. Sheriff.
25:08Mr. Sheriff.
25:23Dad, I don't think you believe me.
25:25No.
25:38Dad.
26:08Dad.
26:38Dad.
27:08Dad.
27:38Dad.
28:09Stay where you are, Buck.
28:14You'd better come out of there, Clint.
28:17Stay where you are, Buck.
28:19Nobody's going to stop me.
28:22You're coming with me.
28:25Don't come any closer, Buck.
28:28I'm going to get out of here even if I have to shoot my way out.
28:33I'm taking you back because it's the best thing for you.
28:39Put it away, kid.
28:45Let's get going.
29:08Let's go.
29:38Dad.
29:44Dad bumped off?
29:49Well, all I can say is that he was a grand old man.
29:54Sure was.
30:01Why, look.
30:03There comes Buck.
30:06And he's got Clint with him.
30:21I reckon we can go now, boys.
30:35Let's go.
31:06Sorry to do this.
31:08Oh, that's all right.
31:10Always wanted a bunk like this.
31:14Nice and quiet.
31:16Peaceful.
31:19There's only one thing I don't like.
31:22There's no drapes on the windows.
31:30I'm sorry.
31:32It's all right.
31:50Hey, Sheriff.
31:54Yeah.
31:56You forgot something.
32:03So I did.
32:15Remember this?
32:33You're wrong, Buck.
32:35I know what you're thinking.
32:37I didn't kill him.
32:39I took a shot at a coyote on the way out to Walton's Ranch.
32:42I swear I did.
32:47Get him?
32:51No.
32:53He got away.
33:03Too bad.
33:16I'm telling you, Buck will never hang Clint.
33:19He'll let him get away sure as shooting.
33:22You think so?
33:23Why, sure.
33:24Why?
33:25They're pals, aren't they?
33:27Well, how about that sermon Buck made about upholding the law?
33:33The law don't count when it comes to the Turner family.
33:36And especially with that sheriff.
33:40Well, let me tell you something.
33:42If Clint Turner is found guilty of this murder...
33:46I'll guarantee there'll be a hanging.
33:50And if he's found guilty...
33:53I'll guarantee there'll be a hanging.
33:57Well, we'll see.
33:59We'll see.
34:01So long. Bye-bye.
34:04Have a drink, Charlie.
34:14Sheriff.
34:15That hombre Vandal's over there in the saloon...
34:17making some mighty unkind remarks about you.
34:20Yeah?
34:22You drunk?
34:23No, just nasty.
34:27Nasty, huh?
34:28Yeah.
34:29Well, that's just about my style of fella today.
34:44Hello, Sheriff. How are you?
34:48Clint is supposed to go to trial today...
34:51but I bet that yellow sheriff never goes through with it.
34:58You didn't mean that, did you, Vandal?
35:02Why, yes, I did.
35:17Come on!
35:48You didn't mean that, did you, Vandal?
35:53I guess not.
35:55Ease your hat, Buck.
35:58Sorry I wrecked your joint.
36:00I lost my... temper.
36:02That's all right. I'll send you the bill next election.
36:05Okay, Charlie.
36:10Attaboy, Buck.
36:13I wouldn't do that if I were you, Vandal.
36:25Come on, boys. Name your poison.
36:27The drink's on Charlie.
36:43Hey, Buck.
36:49Find out anything?
36:51No, Clint.
36:59What the devil's the matter with you, Jack?
37:01What's the matter with you, Jack?
37:03What's the matter with you, Buck?
37:05What's the matter with you, Jack?
37:07What's the matter with you, Buck?
37:09What the devil's the matter with you, Jack?
37:11Why don't you get cleaned up, shaved, put on a clean shirt?
37:14Do something! You sat around like a bump on a log.
37:17You know the trial's in a half hour.
37:19I'm awfully sorry, boss.
37:21I can't go.
37:23I've got lumbago.
37:25I'm awfully sick.
37:27Sick, huh?
37:28The only thing that's gonna keep you away from that trial is a broken back.
37:39Here comes the jury now, fellas.
38:10They've been out just two hours.
38:12It's 12 minutes after five.
38:14Gentlemen of the jury,
38:16what is your verdict?
38:18Guilty.
38:23Clint Turner, for the murder of John Walton,
38:26I must sentence you to hang by the neck till dead
38:30tomorrow morning at sunup.
38:33I wonder how old man Turner likes that.
38:36I reckon he'll just naturally have to like it.
38:46Won't you sit down?
38:51I'm sorry I was delayed, Miss Walton.
38:53It just seems like every time I...
38:55It's all right, Mr. Biggie.
38:57The sheriff isn't here yet.
38:59But he ought to be any minute.
39:02Well, it seems to me
39:04like them cattle must have had something to do with it.
39:08Now, if he thought they was rustled...
39:10That must be him now.
39:13Excuse me.
39:18Oh, hello, Buck.
39:20Hello, Judy.
39:21Mr. Biggers is here.
39:24That's fine.
39:28This is Mr. Biggers,
39:29the man Dad bought that last lot of cattle from.
39:32Howdy, Mr. Biggers.
39:33Howdy, Sheriff.
39:35Aren't you going to see Clint?
39:37Buck, you won't let them hang him, will you?
39:42Not if I can stop them, Judy.
39:49What was the matter with that last bunch of cattle
39:51you sold Mr. Walton?
39:53Nothing that I know of.
39:55But Walton seemed to think they was rustled.
39:58Now, I buy and sell a lot of cattle.
40:00Being as how I didn't know which steers they was,
40:03I told him I'd be over today to look them over.
40:06Wrote that in a letter, didn't you?
40:08Yes.
40:09How did you know?
40:11Found a letter in Mr. Walton's hand the night he was shot.
40:14Sort of figured that had something to do with the shooting.
40:17Maybe so.
40:19I wrote him I'd be up to identify the cattle.
40:22I see.
40:24Mr. Walton said he'd bring in the rustler in 24 hours.
40:27That'd give you time to get here, see the cattle,
40:29and tell him who sold them to you.
40:33And the man that sold you the cattle
40:36wanted to get rid of Walton before he could point him out.
40:52I wonder what that was.
40:57I don't know.
41:27Whoa!
41:57Moo!
42:00Moo!
42:02Moo!
42:04Moo!
42:06He's hit pretty hard, let's get him in the house, Miss Walton.
42:27Alright.
42:28I'll get a basin and some water.
42:54I just called the doctor and he'll be right over.
43:21Someone was sure in a hurry to get them sears out of that corral.
44:48You fellas sure pick a fine time in the morning to come visitin'?
44:56Come on, open up.
44:57What do you want?
45:05It's time for the hangin', Jack.
45:07Can't be, Buck ain't here.
45:08What's that got to do with it?
45:10Buck's sheriff and ain't nobody gonna be hung around here unless he says so.
45:13Buck isn't gonna get out of hangin' Clint Turner this way.
45:16You're his deputy, aren't you?
45:17I was, until y'all woke me up.
45:19Then get started.
45:20If Buck isn't here to do his duty, a deputy's got to do it.
45:23But...
45:24Never mind any buts.
45:25You're gonna bring Clint Turner out here, we're going in to get him.
45:27Start movin'.
45:28Come on, Clint.
45:29I guess they've come after ya.
45:30Where's Buck?
45:31I'd blame him if I know.
45:32He should've been here to take care of this business himself.
45:33I kinda expected Buck would be standin' by me on my last ride.
45:53Oh, you won't be lonesome, Clint.
45:55A few of Walton's friends are here to keep you company on that last ride.
45:58Now, come on, get goin'.
46:02Well, here's a good hat I won't be needin', Jack.
46:06Oh, gee.
46:08Thanks, Clint.
46:10Ain't that swell?
46:18Come on, Jack.
46:19We got horses.
46:20All right.
46:32All right, get through there.
46:38Let's ramble, boys.
46:40Take him away.
47:01Come on.
47:31Come on.
48:01Where are you goin', young fella?
48:28Never mind.
48:29I got things to do.
48:35Why, Buck, the doctor said for you to be quiet.
48:38Who got me, Judy?
48:39I don't know.
48:40I found this on a nail down by the Corral Gate.
48:51Thanks.
48:52I'll be needin' that.
48:54You mustn't go now, Buck.
48:55You're too weak.
48:59What time is it, Judy?
49:00Almost five.
49:03Almost five?
49:06Son of a...
49:11Clint!
49:42He ain't no shape to ride.
49:43I'm goin' with him.
49:45Wait!
49:46I'm going, too.
50:12Well, boys, you all know the chances you're taking on this.
50:22And you all know what it means to me.
50:24Yes, sir.
50:25Well, now, I don't want any slip-up on this.
50:29Is everything ready?
50:30Yes, sir.
50:33Well, let's go.
50:55You're too late, Buck.
50:56They've already taken him to Twin Oaks.
51:08Reckon you figured on being kinda late, didn't ya?
51:22You look like you got much to do.
51:24Why, what do you mean?
51:26I need another deputy.
51:27Would you like to come along?
51:29Sure thing.
51:30Climb on that old pony of yours and let's drift.
51:51Buck, where's Clint?
51:52They've taken him out to Twin Oaks.
51:53Let's go.
52:22All right, now, toss it over there.
52:51Shut up.
52:54Anything you wanna say, Clint?
52:56Yes.
52:57You're about to hang an innocent man.
52:59Yeah?
53:00Well, twelve men didn't think so.
53:02Get on that horse.
53:19Clint, it's at Twin Oaks already.
53:20We gotta get him.
53:34Take a hitch in that rope.
53:39All right.
53:54Look.
53:58That's Turner and his buds coming to stop us.
54:01Glenn, come out here and put it on him.
54:05Wait, fellas.
54:07Buck's with him.
54:13Come on, men.
54:14Hold on nothing.
54:15I'm moving that horse out from under him right now.
54:17Stand back, you...
54:21Slim, take that rope off of Clint's neck.
54:29I'm arresting this man for the murder of Joel Walton.
54:32My man, you're plum crazy.
54:34Of course he is.
54:35You're not gonna pin that murder onto somebody else in order to save your pal's hide.
54:39Keep out of this, Vandal.
54:40The next time I plug you, it'll be in a different spot.
54:47I chased you away from Walton's crell last night, and you shot me.
54:51That ain't true.
54:58Found that on the crell gate last night after the shooting.
55:02It's off of the pants you're wearing.
55:04I never had these pants on till this morning.
55:07Vandal gave them to me.
55:09Why, he's lying.
55:10I never saw them before.
55:11I'll get you for this, Vandal.
55:13I ain't gonna swing for you.
55:16You told the right story, Sheriff, only you've got the wrong man.
55:22Vandal's the one that's been rustling all the cattle, and he's the one that killed old Walton.
55:26I never had anything to do with it.
55:28Yes, you did.
55:30You sold me them Turner steers that Walton was holding in his crell, and I got a bill of sale to prove it.
55:37Oh, no, you don't.
55:43Put these on him.
55:45Too bad I can't fix them around his neck.
55:50What a fine double-crosser you turned out to be.
56:21Now don't start to cry, Judy.
56:23Everything's all right now.
56:24That was a mighty close call, son.
56:27It sure was, Dad.
56:28It was.
56:29Here you are, Clint.
56:31You might meet a coward you own on the way into town.
56:33Get him this time.
56:35Thanks, Buck.
56:36That's all right.
56:38Buck, I don't know how to thank you.
56:40Don't.
56:48Looks like the end of the range war to me, Buck.
56:58Yeah?
56:59Well, it's just starting for them.
57:01Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
