WHO says it needs a billion dollars for "unparalleled crisis" of Ebola

The World health Organisation has announced it will need at least 1 billion US dollars (770,000 Euros) to contain the Ebola outbreak.

The death toll in west Africa has doubled to almost 2,500 in the last month.

WHO assistant director general Bruse Aylward said:“This health crisis we face is unparalleled in modern times. The numbers (of Ebola cases) can be kept in the tens of thousands, but that is going to require a much faster escalation of the response.”

Meanwhile Ebola is having a devastating effect on tourism, a double blow to nations already battered by war and with fragile economies.

However it’s not just countries with Ebola that are affected – tour operators from Kenya to South Africa say thousands of people from abroad are cancelling their holidays and business trips, fearful that the disease will spread across the continent.
