Most people will agree, shrimps aren’t the most attractive species. One that was recently plucked from the waters in Fort Pierce, Florida is downright terrifying to look at.

Steve Bargeron was fishing from a dock when he spotted a fellow fisherman pluck the monster out of the water. According to Steve, the creature was about a foot and a half long.

He said it was so big, the massive shrimp was striking its own tail so it was grabbed on the back, similar to how you might hold a lobster. Photos of it were quickly posted on The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's facebook page.

Almost right away, scientists started speculating what it could be. They soon determined it’s a kind of mantis shrimp, which if you want to be technical, aren’t actually shrimp.

They're a species of crustaceans named stomatopods. These specific crustaceans have eyes on stalks that can move independently of each other.

As for the fate of the captured mantis shrimp, it was tossed back in the water after the photo shoot.
