Wayne Rooney's second-half penalty gave England victory over Norway in what was an underwhelming display by coach Roy Hodgson's players.

Only 40,181 - the lowest attendance for an England match at the new Wembley - watched the home side struggle in their first match since the World Cup.

Rooney fired high into the net in the 68th minute after Raheem Sterling had been fouled by Omar Elabdellaoui.

England's Joe Hart pulled off a great save to keep out Joshua King's header.

Hodgson's side begin their Euro 2016 qualification campaign at Switzerland on Monday.
