Driving can be a confusing duty, especially when road markings aren’t exactly clear. A striping project in Centreville, Virginia recently produced some horrible results.

Any motorist who was traveling along eastbound I-66 after the taping job couldn’t help but notice the lines were anything but straight. The wiggly lines left drivers scratching their heads and hoping they were in the right lane.

According to Virginia Department of Transportation staffers, the temporary tape job was completed a week ago. During rush hour traffic, portions of the taped lines peeled from the roadway.

The aftermath was long pieces of tape pushed to the edge of the road, making it appear as though there was an extra, crooked lane. There were also places where the markings were missing, so it was unclear if cars were supposed to merge.

The stripes were laid down as part of a temporary lane shift while highway employees worked to rehabilitate the I-66 bridges. Lane closures are in effect while the lines are straightened, meanwhile the Virginia Department of Transportation is looking into what caused the problem.
