Many people take dietary supplements to augment the vitamins and minerals that may be missing in their diets. Use of Vitamin D and probiotics increased more than 25 percent between 2009 and 2010. The National Institute of Health reports that most Americans are deficient in vitamin D, which is found in sunlight and very few foods. Probiotics are live microorganisms that help to balance the good bacteria in the body. Both these supplements may have beneficial health effects.
