Prosecutor labels Pistorius 'deceitful witness' in murder trial

In South Africa the chief prosecutor in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial has called on the judge to reject his defence, saying it is “devoid of any truth”.

The former Paralympic track star sat behind prosecutor Gerrie Nel as he accused Pistorius of being a ‘deceitful witness’ in his closing statements.

The prosecution argued that he deliberately shot his then-girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year after a quarrel.

Nel claimed there were ‘glaring contradictions’ in the defence’s story that Pistorius killed his model girlfriend by accident, after mistaking her for an intruder.

For the first time, the fathers of both Steenkamp and Pistorius attended court to hear the closing arguments. The defence are due to speak on Friday.

If convicted of premeditated murder Pistorius faces 25 years to life in prison.
