00:01The European Commission has unveiled new sustainability rules aimed at monitoring
00:07water and energy consumption of energy-hungry data centers. EU data centers with more than
00:12500 kilowatt of installed capacity that report under the bloc's energy efficiency rules will
00:19receive an electronic sustainability label as of the 21st of September. The new sustainability
00:24label is intended to make facilities comparable on power and water efficiency as well as the
00:31sourcing of their electricity. The move comes as Brussels aims to triple data center capacity
00:36across the bloc by 2035 as part of a push to reduce reliance on big tech and develop Europe's own
00:43AI capabilities. EU lawmakers have however recently raised concerns about Microsoft's efforts to
00:49influence the new rules. In addition, minimum performance standards will be announced in
00:542027 to prevent new facilities from being built below certain standards.
