The death toll from the earthquake which struck south east China continues to rise.

Almost 600 people have been confirmed dead and more than 24000 people injured

The magnitude 6.1 quake hit the mountainous region of Yunnan on Sunday afternoon.

More than 80,000 homes have been destroyed and close to 230,000 were evacuated the authorities said.

But amongst the death and destruction there have been a few stories of hope.

Rescue teams managed to find an 88 year old woman under the rubble who had survived for 50 hours.

Her son brought workers to the spot but it was only on Tuesday that they heard her voice and could locate where she was. They drilled a small hole to feed her glucose liquid through a pipe, then began dismantling the structure layer by layer. Six hours later she was out and is now being treated in hospital.
