00:00:00You
00:00:31Hey cutie
00:00:34I never forget how to love
00:00:39It ain't so bad being a toy
00:00:43Nobody takes time to stop and think about what's important in their life
00:00:46Teen Idol actor Eddie Ray was killed in a motorcycle accident
00:00:50I got bigger fish to fry and places to see
00:00:52On California State Road 653
00:00:55His first movie Rebel Without a Reason was a huge hit with teenagers
00:01:01It had been a very rough winter
00:01:04For two weeks in late January
00:01:06The temperature stayed in the single digits
00:01:09Dropping to a low of minus 36 degrees one night
00:01:13On top of that we had a record snowfall
00:01:17I lost my job in early January and things were very tense at home between Rita and me
00:01:24I accidentally happened on an Eddie Ray fan club website
00:01:27Where I met Sam, Dan and Jane
00:01:30They were all younger than me
00:01:32But we all shared a love for Eddie Ray
00:01:34And the influence he had on that generation
00:01:38My parents' generation
00:01:41It was late May when we made the decision to visit Fairview, Indiana
00:01:44Eddie Ray's hometown
00:01:46We would all meet up in Indianapolis
00:01:48And then drive up to Fairview and spend a couple of days there
00:01:52I would drive in from Cincinnati and the rest of the group would fly to Indianapolis
00:01:57Four different people embarking on a journey in search of answers
00:02:04There was Sam, who was trying to find himself
00:02:10Just think about it, okay?
00:02:12I told you, there's nothing to think about
00:02:15Sam, are you still going across the country on this wild goose chase?
00:02:18It's crazy! Those others, they're not our kind
00:02:21You don't know anything about them
00:02:23If you were going off to Indiana, your papa would roll over in his grave
00:02:27Mom, calm down
00:02:30Remember what your doctor said
00:02:32Besides, I think Dad would be proud of me
00:02:36Nothing good ever came out of Indiana, right Marvin?
00:02:40Dan Quayle
00:02:41Dan Quayle, what a joke
00:02:43What about your job? What does your boss think of this Meshugganah idea of yours?
00:02:47I'm only missing one day
00:02:48And he worked extra last week
00:02:50Sam, I'm just looking out for your well-being
00:02:52I don't want anything to happen to my little boy chick
00:02:56I've got to pick up Rose
00:02:59Catch you later, Sam
00:03:09I'll be fine
00:03:12And there was Dan, still grieving over the tragic death of his young bride, Tabitha
00:03:25Hello, Dan
00:03:26Aaron
00:03:32You know, I really hope Allah somehow spoke to you
00:03:34And convinced you to change your mind
00:03:37You know, I really hope Allah somehow spoke to you
00:03:39And convinced you to change your mind
00:03:41Dan, I'm telling you, I have a very bad feeling about this trip
00:03:44Since when did you care for such things?
00:03:46You're a non-believer, remember?
00:03:48I'm only a realist
00:03:50Okay, so what? I question everything
00:03:52But my friend, I'm questioning you
00:03:54I mean, you're traveling this great distance
00:03:56And for what?
00:04:00Dan, I agree for Tabitha too
00:04:03You know she was like a sister to me
00:04:05But do you honestly believe that this Eddie Ray is going to help you?
00:04:09Dan, he's dead
00:04:11And he's been dead for almost 50 years
00:04:17Why are you doing this?
00:04:19Look, Aaron, I've told you
00:04:20These are good people
00:04:21They've helped me through my grief
00:04:23Look, never mind
00:04:26I'll call you later
00:04:35Last there was Jay
00:04:37Someone who pushed, prodded, and convinced all of us
00:04:39To go to Indiana during that hot August weekend
00:04:49I still think of her
00:04:55But I have a hard time remembering her
00:04:59Well, honey, you were only 5 years old when we lost her
00:05:03Just...
00:05:05Just hold on to the memories you have
00:05:07She loved you
00:05:09So much
00:05:15Dad, do mom know?
00:05:19I mean, like then?
00:05:24Honey, I don't know
00:05:26But I believe she...
00:05:29Well, you know
00:05:32Sorry
00:05:37I got stuck in traffic
00:05:39I'm sorry
00:06:01Okay, time for me to leave
00:06:03You be a good girl, alright?
00:06:05Can I go with you?
00:06:06Will you bring me back something?
00:06:08I'm only going to be gone for 3 days
00:06:10Maybe next time you can go with me
00:06:12I know that you and mom are...
00:06:13Well, she's mad
00:06:15But she'll get over it
00:06:16Listen
00:06:18I know things have been really difficult lately
00:06:20But we both love you very much
00:06:22And you know that
00:06:23Deep down, we love each other
00:06:25That's what's important
00:06:26I'll see you soon, okay?
00:06:28Alright
00:06:38Bye
00:07:08I'm sorry
00:07:14So you still plan on going to Indianapolis?
00:07:19God knows why you're too young to be going through male menopause
00:07:23Look, don't run away from me!
00:07:25I'm not running away from you!
00:07:26But I don't have anything else to say
00:07:28You just don't understand me
00:07:30I don't think you've ever understood me!
00:07:34Understand?
00:07:36I gave up trying to understand you a long time ago
00:07:41You have obligations here!
00:07:44You shouldn't be going off and screwing around with somebody younger than your own sister!
00:07:48Yeah, it's not that way at all!
00:07:50I can control myself
00:07:52What about last year?
00:07:54When you and what's-
00:07:58Forget it
00:08:02Rita
00:08:03It's only for 3 days
00:08:06It's going to work out
00:08:09You just have to trust me
00:08:37Report card's going to be good?
00:08:38Mm-hmm
00:08:39You like your teachers?
00:08:40Yeah, I even told them that you're going to Eddie Ray's hometown
00:08:43Oh yeah? Cool, that's right, I leave tomorrow, I'll be gone all weekend
00:08:45Have you ever been to Eddie Ray's hometown before?
00:08:47No, I never have, it'll be my first time
00:08:49Yeah, did you ever watch his movies when you were a kid?
00:08:51Yeah, I remember watching his movies on television
00:08:53But you know, he was popular even before I was born
00:08:56Wow, I think he's so cool
00:08:58I even think Mom likes him, he's so cute
00:09:02Hey, I taped a special about him last night
00:09:04Do you want to watch it?
00:09:05Yeah, do you want me to go get Mom?
00:09:06No, Mom's pretty busy
00:09:08Maybe she can watch later
00:09:09Okay
00:09:10Okay?
00:09:27Let's see here, how about...
00:09:31There we go
00:09:3350 years ago, a young man from Fairview, Indiana
00:09:36left the comforts of home to follow his dream
00:09:39and head for Hollywood, seeking fame and fortune
00:09:42Little did he realize that his life would be cut short
00:09:44by a tragic motorcycle accident
00:09:47just as he was obtaining a measure of the admiration he was seeking
00:09:50or that he would be credited with influencing young teenagers worldwide
00:09:54in the baby boomer pop culture scene for the next half century
00:09:58Let's look at one of the most recognized and revered scenes
00:10:01from the history of the cinema from Rebel Without a Reason
00:10:10Why'd this happen to us?
00:10:12I ain't a bad kid, am I?
00:10:14Ronnie, you're not bad, it's them
00:10:17Sometimes I feel like, like no one trusts me
00:10:20They treat me like a child, like I'm being suffocated
00:10:23I hate them, they're all monsters
00:10:25Ronnie, don't ever say you're bad
00:10:27You're not bad to me
00:10:29I'll never treat my kids like the way they treated me
00:10:32or the way they treated that David
00:10:34Poor kid
00:10:36You know, the whole world is so messed up
00:10:39Nobody takes time to stop and think about what's important anymore
00:10:43They're so comfortable in their nice homes and nice jobs
00:10:47It's all an illusion, none of it's real
00:10:50It's like the whole world forgot how to love
00:10:53It's like the whole world forgot how to love
00:10:55Nobody cares about love anymore
00:10:57Money's all they care about
00:10:59Ronnie, you're not like them
00:11:01You know how to love
00:11:03You're so nice
00:11:05and strong
00:11:07and gentle
00:11:09And you've always accepted me for who I am
00:11:11You've never treated me like a tramp
00:11:17Betty, I swear
00:11:19I'll never forget how to love
00:11:23♪
00:11:54♪
00:12:00So, anyone hungry?
00:12:02I am starving, I couldn't eat that crap they serve on the plane
00:12:05I mean, unless everyone else is hungry
00:12:09I can wait
00:12:11I could go for some grub and a cup of coffee
00:12:13Sure, I could use a bite
00:12:15Great, I found this sandwich coffee shop kind of place on the internet
00:12:18It's in an artsy neighborhood
00:12:19Oh yeah?
00:12:20Yeah, you know, theater district, art galleries, that kind of thing
00:12:22Cool
00:12:48Are you excited?
00:12:50You know, about me on this trip
00:12:53Yeah, I am
00:12:55Normally I'm not an impulsive person
00:12:58but you're very persuasive
00:13:02Well, I usually get my way
00:13:05So, have you ever been to Indianapolis before?
00:13:08Yeah, um, I was here when I was a kid
00:13:12A long time, gosh, thirty years ago
00:13:15Anyway, this part of town was a lot different then
00:13:18There were a lot of gypsies around
00:13:21Really?
00:13:22Yeah
00:13:23What did they do?
00:13:24I have no idea
00:13:26I was just a kid
00:13:28Adam, you're a lot older than...
00:13:33I mean, so, how old are you?
00:13:38I'll be thirty-six this year
00:13:41You look so much younger
00:13:44Thank you
00:13:46Sam, tell me, how long have you been an Eddie Ray fan?
00:13:48Since I was about thirteen, I guess
00:13:51That's when I saw Rebel Without a Reason
00:13:53That was such a cool movie, it really rocked
00:13:55You know, the grown-ups were so, what's the word?
00:13:58Square
00:14:00It's hard to believe that our parents were the ones that grew up with those films
00:14:04and they still ended up being so uptight
00:14:06No, my dad never treated me like that
00:14:08He was really understanding
00:14:10My father wasn't, he was strict
00:14:12He was also very traditional, you know, in the old ways
00:14:15What do you mean, the old ways?
00:14:17Well, he was supposed to go back to Lebanon after he graduated
00:14:20but he ended up marrying my mother instead
00:14:23Was your mother Lebanese?
00:14:25No, she was English and a Christian
00:14:30Was your wife an Eddie Ray fan?
00:14:32My wife loved Eddie Ray
00:14:34She was very western in some ways
00:14:37but it wasn't until she was killed that I started watching his movies
00:14:43Anyway, now I'm here instead of back in New York working
00:14:47At least you have a job
00:14:49Nowadays, with the way the economy is, marketing types like me are a dime a dozen
00:14:54Well, I can't be fired because I have my own business
00:14:57I mean, if my business isn't doing well, I don't have to worry about making payroll
00:15:01I just don't pay myself
00:15:03But listen, my friend, things will improve
00:15:06You'll find a job and my business will grow
00:15:09God will
00:15:12Anyway, Jane, tell me, I can't remember, did your dad ever remarry?
00:15:17No
00:15:25So, where to now?
00:15:27Would you mind if we drove to the track? I always wanted to see it
00:15:30That's cool
00:16:12Let's go
00:16:34So, was it what you expected?
00:16:37I wish my father could have seen it
00:16:39He was a big race fan
00:16:41I remember we used to listen to the race on the radio when I was a kid
00:16:45Really?
00:16:46Yeah, but he never made it up here
00:16:48He died so young
00:16:50Anyway, did you enjoy seeing the track?
00:16:53Yeah, I guess
00:16:55I'm not a big race fan
00:16:57It was bigger than I thought it'd be
00:17:00You know, Dan, you should come back in May and, you know, see the race
00:17:05Yeah
00:17:06We better head to Fairview, we gotta take the back roads to get there
00:17:11Yeah
00:17:29You okay?
00:17:31Yeah, I just don't like to sit in one place for a long time
00:17:37I'll be fine, don't worry about me
00:17:41Okay
00:17:48Sam?
00:17:51Yeah, come on in
00:17:56Where's your mom?
00:17:58Mom's out shopping
00:18:01So?
00:18:04So...
00:18:06So what?
00:18:08You know what we talked about
00:18:11About what happened the other night?
00:18:13That again, we've been through this
00:18:15Sam, put the groceries away, your poor old mama's tired
00:18:19So Marvin, how are you?
00:18:21How is your beautiful, unattached sister that doesn't have a date Friday night?
00:18:25Mom, stop
00:18:26No, it's not right
00:18:27You sit in front of that computer all day, ruining your eyesight
00:18:30And those pictures you look at, you know you should be going out with a nice, attractive girl
00:18:34Rose is gonna make some lucky man a very nice wife
00:18:37Mother, please
00:18:38Sam, a good-looking boy like you, with so much to give the girls
00:18:41Just like your papa, may he rest in peace
00:18:43You should be on the lookout for a nice girl like Rose
00:18:46And you're not gonna find one in those bars you go to
00:18:48In those places, all you're gonna find is a bunch of whores
00:18:50I didn't raise you to go out with whores
00:18:52Oh yeah, well you don't know anything about me
00:19:03Dan?
00:19:05Back at lunch, you know when you asked me if my dad had remarried?
00:19:11Well, he's gay
00:19:13Has been as far back as I can remember
00:19:16Oh
00:19:18And well, my dad's African-American
00:19:20What?
00:19:21I thought I was weird with a Jewish mother and a German Methodist father
00:19:24Well, my mother was Asian
00:19:26They met when my dad was in the service
00:19:28Was your dad in Vietnam?
00:19:30Yes, but my mom was an American
00:19:33Her family came to San Francisco before the Second World War
00:19:38They were prisoners
00:19:40At the Amache Intern Camp in Colorado
00:19:43Wow
00:19:47Now here's a clip from the star-studded movie, The Very Tall Texan
00:19:51Look Tommy, I ain't trying to butt in
00:19:54But you gotta stay away from them Farleys
00:19:56You don't belong up in that big fancy house
00:19:59It's only gonna bring you trouble
00:20:01And people don't care about folks like us
00:20:04We're just like something they own
00:20:06It ain't right thinking you can mix with them
00:20:09I seen you sniffing around that Marianne
00:20:12Boy, you ain't nothing but a toy to her
00:20:14Her old man finds out what's going on
00:20:16He's gonna shoot you in the back and claim you drawed first
00:20:20Look pops, it's none of your damn business
00:20:24It ain't so bad being a toy
00:20:26Ain't my problem, Frank ain't man enough to satisfy her
00:20:29Boy, you're headed for trouble, I'm only trying to help you out
00:20:32That Marianne's gonna drop you like a hot potato
00:20:35Worst, she'll say that you forced yourself on her
00:20:37And then they'll lynch you
00:20:39Tommy, you're a good kid
00:20:41But you just gotta stay with your own kind
00:20:43That's just the way it is
00:20:46Pops, I don't plan on being a cow puncher the rest of my life
00:20:49I got bigger fish to fry and places to see
00:20:52There's more to the world than this damn ranch
00:20:54Ah
00:20:56Don't you think, sweetie?
00:21:01Is there a quicker way?
00:21:04Nope
00:21:05Welcome to the Midwest
00:21:07A million small towns in the middle of nowhere
00:21:12Damn!
00:21:18You okay?
00:21:20Yeah, I'm fine
00:21:21You guys should watch where you're going, someone could get hurt
00:21:23Oh my god, is everything alright?
00:21:25Very lucky, my friend
00:21:26Yeah, lucky so, I've been told
00:21:28What the hell are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?
00:21:31I could ask you guys the same question
00:21:33As a matter of fact, I will
00:21:34We're going to Fairview
00:21:36You know, the hometown of...
00:21:37Fairview? That's where I'm headed
00:21:39You mind giving me a lift?
00:21:41Sure, I'm Jane
00:21:43Sam, and it's Dan, and...
00:21:45I'm Adam, the distracted driver
00:21:47Okay, you guys ready to roll?
00:21:50You mind if I sit up front?
00:21:51No, go ahead
00:21:52What'd you say your name was again?
00:21:56Some folks call me Roy
00:21:58Let's go
00:22:21So Dan, you're Lebanese
00:22:24No, I'm American
00:22:26My father was Lebanese.
00:22:28Did you ever get back to Lebanon?
00:22:31No, you see, my father was Muslim, but my mother was Christian.
00:22:36That must have been challenging.
00:22:38It was. For six months I would go to church with my mother, and for six months I would go to mosque with my father.
00:22:44Really?
00:22:45Yes. My father, he was strict, but he was also very cunning.
00:22:52In what way?
00:22:54Well, before my 16th birthday he told me I needed to decide whether I wanted to be Christian or Muslim.
00:23:02So on our way to buy this old car, for me, he said it would be a great car to drive to mosque.
00:23:09And?
00:23:10Pretty much got the message and became Muslim.
00:23:14What does your wife think about you going on this little junket?
00:23:19Well, my wife, she was killed in a convenience store hold-up almost a year ago.
00:23:29Did they catch the guy who did it?
00:23:32Yeah. He was some dumb kid looking for money to buy some more dope.
00:23:37Damn junkies.
00:23:39No. I mean, I felt that way at first, but we just started hanging out with the wrong crowd.
00:23:46That's too bad. Sometimes life is really unfair.
00:23:57Dane, you must let go of your grief and move on.
00:24:00I hate seeing you so depressed.
00:24:04I just blame myself for making Tabitha work.
00:24:09If my business would have been better, or if she would have gotten that teaching job, she'd still be with us.
00:24:15You must put this tragedy behind you and move on.
00:24:20Tabitha would want that.
00:24:22Maybe you should start seeing other people.
00:24:26You know, meet other women.
00:24:28Go out.
00:24:33I just can't. I would feel like I betrayed her.
00:24:36Not right now.
00:24:38Listen, Dane.
00:24:40Each day you grieve is a day lost.
00:24:44You must accept the past and embrace the future.
00:24:48Do you want to honor her?
00:24:50Honor her by living your life.
00:24:52All in good time.
00:24:54All in good time.
00:25:03Stop! Pull it! Pull it here!
00:25:05Do it!
00:25:15Damn you!
00:25:17You're not getting better!
00:25:19Damn you!
00:25:23Hey! What are you doing out here?
00:25:26We don't open for a couple of hours.
00:25:29I'm sorry, sir. I don't know what's going on here.
00:25:33Are you the manager?
00:25:34Yeah, and I'm also the owner.
00:25:36Dad opened this theater back in 49.
00:25:39So, where are you folks from?
00:25:41I'm from all over.
00:25:42I'm from Cincinnati.
00:25:43The lady's from San Francisco.
00:25:45One of the guys is from Florida,
00:25:47and the other one's from New Jersey.
00:25:48I don't know where Roy's from.
00:25:50Where are you headed?
00:25:51We're heading to Fairview.
00:25:52Are we getting close?
00:25:53It's just up the road.
00:25:54Great.
00:25:55You know, this drive-in's where all the kids from Fairview
00:25:57would come in the 50s and 60s.
00:25:59Nowadays, they all play computer games or rent movies.
00:26:02I don't know how much longer I can keep the theater going.
00:26:05You know, there's not very many drive-ins left around.
00:26:08But we've been open since 49,
00:26:11except for that time after them kids were killed.
00:26:13My dad felt real bad about the accident,
00:26:15so he closed earlier that year.
00:26:16You know, usually we close at the end of October.
00:26:18That year he closed in August.
00:26:20Wow.
00:26:21What happened?
00:26:22Well, I don't remember exactly.
00:26:24I was just a little boy at the time,
00:26:26but the story is that these kids came to see Rebel Without a Reason,
00:26:29and they'd been drinking and left the theater,
00:26:32got into a terrible car wreck, and were killed.
00:26:34Gosh.
00:26:35It was back in 1958.
00:26:38Uh-huh.
00:26:39Well, you folks enjoy your visit.
00:26:41Thanks, I appreciate it.
00:26:42Take care.
00:26:45You mind telling me what that was all about?
00:26:48Don't worry about it.
00:26:49Let's go, okay?
00:26:55All right.
00:27:06Hey, why don't we stop and get something to eat?
00:27:25Don't you have a place to stay?
00:27:27Don't worry about me, I'll be fine.
00:27:29Why don't you stay with us?
00:27:31We have three rooms reserved.
00:27:33It's okay, isn't it?
00:27:34Okay.
00:27:35You guys go check in, and I'll wait out here.
00:27:49Hello, can I help you?
00:27:51Yes, we have three rooms reserved under the name Jane Mystic.
00:27:54I have been trying to reach you all day, sweetheart.
00:27:57We only have two rooms left.
00:27:59What?
00:28:00See, the pork producers, they're meeting over in Goodlington, the county seat.
00:28:05And, well, they ran out of rooms, so we get their overflow.
00:28:09We have a contract with the county.
00:28:11There was nothing I could do.
00:28:14I'm sorry.
00:28:15So, well, I managed to save you two rooms.
00:28:18But I had a reservation.
00:28:21All right.
00:28:22We have five people now.
00:28:24What are we going to do?
00:28:26Well, I thought you might pick up an extra person.
00:28:29So one of the rooms that I saved is our mini suite.
00:28:32On one side, there's a king-sized bed.
00:28:34And on the other side, there's a sofa bed and a cot.
00:28:38The second room has two queen-sized beds.
00:28:40So, see, there's room enough for five people.
00:28:43All right, come here, guys.
00:28:50I don't think there's much we can do here.
00:28:53Jane, Roy, and myself will take the suite.
00:28:56Samuel and Dan take the other room.
00:28:59Okay, who will sleep where?
00:29:02You take the bed, we'll put Roy on the cot,
00:29:04and I'll sleep on the sofa bed in the other room.
00:29:07I'm responsible for Roy being with us.
00:29:09And we don't know anything about the guy,
00:29:11so I'd like to keep him where I can see him.
00:29:13Fine with me.
00:29:15Sure, we were going to share a room anyway.
00:29:17Jane?
00:29:18Sure, that's okay.
00:29:20I feel responsible for asking Roy to stay with us.
00:29:23I'm sorry.
00:29:25Don't worry about it.
00:29:26Let's just all get some rest.
00:29:29Okay.
00:29:36Hey, did you notice anything strange about the town back there?
00:29:39No, why do you ask?
00:29:42I don't know, there's not much to the town, but...
00:29:46maybe it's just a feeling.
00:29:47Whatever.
00:29:50So, have you ever dated any women,
00:29:53or have you always been gay?
00:29:55Look, I'm not gay, okay?
00:29:56I've been with plenty of women.
00:29:57They beg for mercy.
00:29:59Why would you even ask that?
00:30:01Come on, I saw the way you were looking at that guy back there at the track.
00:30:04That's not the way that someone who's straight looks at another man.
00:30:07So I notice one good-looking guy,
00:30:09and all of a sudden I'm a homosexual.
00:30:12Come on, Dan.
00:30:13I didn't think you'd be so judgmental.
00:30:16All I'm saying is life's full of difficult choices.
00:30:19Remember that story I told you about having to choose
00:30:21between being Christian and Muslim?
00:30:23Think about it.
00:30:25Well, I...
00:30:27So, did you ever regret your decision?
00:30:31Sometimes I used to wonder.
00:30:33That is, until I met Tabitha in college.
00:30:36I mean, she was a modern Muslim,
00:30:37but she would have never considered marrying me if I were Christian.
00:30:40Really?
00:30:42Yeah.
00:30:43I mean, sometimes I believe that once we make that defining decision in life,
00:30:47our die is cast,
00:30:49and we have very little control over our destiny.
00:30:53Well, I don't think things are set in stone.
00:30:55You can always change your mind.
00:30:59Well, my friend, I hope you're right.
00:31:02Yeah, I hope you're right.
00:31:05Well, good night, man.
00:31:08Good night.
00:31:15Oh, sorry.
00:31:17Oh, come on.
00:31:18Like you haven't seen someone in a bathroom before?
00:31:23Oh.
00:31:25Need to pee?
00:31:28Yes.
00:31:31Where's Roy?
00:31:33He wasn't here when I started my shower, and his bed's still made.
00:31:38I don't know.
00:31:39He wasn't in the room when I went to sleep last night either.
00:31:42Maybe he went for a walk or something.
00:31:44Anyway, what's the plan?
00:31:45I'll call Sam and see if those guys are ready for some breakfast.
00:31:48In what, 15 minutes?
00:31:50Yeah, that sounds pretty good.
00:31:52Uh, no, wait, actually make it 20 minutes, okay?
00:31:56You got it.
00:31:57Thanks.
00:32:06Up in the country, the day the spreader broke,
00:32:09we went to town for parts,
00:32:11I and my neighbor, a man of furrowed ears,
00:32:14knowing every mile of corn and beans along the road
00:32:17like so many freckles on his arm.
00:32:20Whether good soil or bad, and how the drainage was,
00:32:23I knew John Deere tires as big as a box...
00:32:26Leave me in his.
00:32:28It's the Midwest.
00:32:29It's a good place to get them.
00:32:31I like eggs over easy, toast, bacon, you know,
00:32:35the regular breakfast thing.
00:32:37Hey, Roy.
00:32:38Hey.
00:32:39You guys gonna sleep your life away?
00:32:41We were gonna get something to eat.
00:32:43Like to join us?
00:32:44Gosh, I've already eaten.
00:32:46Come on, have some more coffee.
00:32:48Sure.
00:32:49But let's see what the poet has to say first.
00:32:59Soybeans.
00:33:01The October air was warm and musky,
00:33:03blowing over brown fields,
00:33:05heavy with the fragrance of freshly combined beans,
00:33:08the breath of harvest.
00:33:10He was pulling a truckload onto the scales
00:33:12at the elevator near the rail siding north of town
00:33:15when a big Cadillac drove up.
00:33:17A man stepped out wearing a three-piece suit
00:33:20and a gold pinky ring.
00:33:22The man said he had just invested a hundred grand in soybeans
00:33:25and wanted to see what they looked like.
00:33:27The farmer stared at the man and was quiet,
00:33:30reaching for the tobacco in the rear pocket of his jeans
00:33:33where he wore his only ring,
00:33:35a threadbare circle rubbed by working cans of dip
00:33:38and long hours on the backside of a hundred-acre run.
00:33:41He scooped up a handful of small white beans,
00:33:44the pearls of the prairie, saying,
00:33:46Soybeans look like a foot of water on the field in April
00:33:49when you're ready to plant and can't get in,
00:33:52like three kids at the kitchen table
00:33:54eating macaroni and cheese five nights in a row,
00:33:57or like a broken part on the combine
00:33:59when your credit with the implement dealer is nearly tapped.
00:34:02Soybeans look like prayers bouncing off the ceiling
00:34:05when prices on the Chicago grain market start to drop,
00:34:08or like your old man's tears when you tell him
00:34:10how much the land might bring for subdivisions.
00:34:13Soybeans look like the first good night of sleep in weeks
00:34:16when you unload at the elevator and the kids get Christmas.
00:34:19He spat a little juice on the tire of the Cadillac,
00:34:22laughing to spite himself and saying to the man,
00:34:25Now maybe you can tell me what a hundred grand looks like.
00:34:30applause
00:34:49I found out how to get to the museum.
00:34:51How's that?
00:34:52Go out to the main road and turn left,
00:34:54and it's, go four blocks and then take a right,
00:34:56and it's supposed to be on the corner there,
00:34:58should be no problem.
00:34:59Hi, y'all with the pork producers?
00:35:01No, we're just visiting.
00:35:02I'm from New Jersey.
00:35:03I'm from, got a big one, you want to see?
00:35:06Sam.
00:35:07You'll have to excuse my friend.
00:35:08He's from South Florida.
00:35:10Lack of ocean water has affected his brain.
00:35:12Right.
00:35:13Oh, that's all right.
00:35:14I can see I got the wrong kind of plumbing
00:35:15for such a big man anyhow.
00:35:17Yeah, well, you're nuts.
00:35:18Besides, where does some pig farmer from Hicksville
00:35:21know about anything anyway?
00:35:22Sam, stop it.
00:35:23Settle down.
00:35:24What?
00:35:25Dan's not interested in her.
00:35:27He's got the hots for that waitress over at the coffee shop.
00:35:30What's her name?
00:35:32Barbara?
00:35:33Jesus, Sam, what is it with you?
00:35:34Yeah, women should be treated with respect.
00:35:36Like an exquisite flower?
00:35:40Fine, I'm sorry.
00:35:41Hey, Roy.
00:35:43There's nothing I like better than a good pissing contest,
00:35:45except maybe a good drag race.
00:35:47What about it, Dan?
00:35:49What about what?
00:35:50You and me and those two rods out on the street.
00:35:52A race to the finish.
00:35:53Mano a mano.
00:35:55We can't just take those cars.
00:35:57Sure we can.
00:35:58I've talked to the owners and they said it's fine.
00:36:00Anyway, I told them you're an up-and-coming indie race car driver
00:36:03and I'm Fireball Robbins.
00:36:05You don't know much about drag racing, do you?
00:36:08What about it, Dan?
00:36:09I can't race you.
00:36:10What if we wreck the cars or if we get hurt?
00:36:12Come on, let's do it.
00:36:13Loser buys the first round tonight.
00:36:15You're nuts.
00:36:16Why would I want to race you?
00:36:17Why not?
00:36:18What else is there to do?
00:36:20Why are you taunting me?
00:36:21What did I ever do to you?
00:36:22Everything.
00:36:24I can't race you.
00:36:26Look, your old man would be out on the car revving it up by now.
00:36:30Hell, he's probably looking down on you ready to disown you right now.
00:36:35Unless you're chicken.
00:36:36Leave him out of this.
00:36:37I'm not afraid of you.
00:36:39You want to race me to the finish?
00:36:41Fine.
00:36:42Let's do it.
00:36:43Let's do it.
00:36:44The old drag strip south of town.
00:36:46Good luck, Dan!
00:36:47Do you think they'll be okay?
00:36:48I mean, do they know what they're doing?
00:36:51I sure as hell hope so.
00:36:52Ready?
00:36:53On your mark.
00:36:55Get set.
00:36:57Go!
00:37:22Where'd you learn to drive like that?
00:37:29I've been around.
00:37:30It's good to know I can still be the pro, though.
00:37:32Wait a minute.
00:37:33How'd you know I used to race?
00:37:34Well, you told me your father used to love racing and he bought you a car when you were 16,
00:37:38so I just put two and two together.
00:37:41So, why did you quit?
00:37:43Well, you know, my wife, Tabitha, after my accident, she...
00:37:46Well, I wasn't hurt bad, but she made me promise to quit racing.
00:37:49That was about three years ago, something like that.
00:37:53So how do you feel?
00:37:55How do you feel right now?
00:37:56Oh, my God.
00:37:57I feel just amazing.
00:37:58It's like a huge weight has been lifted off my back.
00:38:01I haven't felt this good since just before she died.
00:38:06God, that was incredible.
00:38:07Wow.
00:38:08Unbelievable.
00:38:09Oh, my God.
00:38:10Great.
00:38:11Outstanding.
00:38:12I'll tell you what, guys.
00:38:13Let's tell Barbara, the waitress back at the restaurant, that Dan won the race.
00:38:18No, come on, guys.
00:38:19We'll just tell her that I lost just by hair and she'll feel bad for me.
00:38:22Why do I get the feeling that you're going to get...
00:38:24Whatever.
00:38:25Way to go.
00:38:26See you guys back at the restaurant.
00:38:28All right, cool.

00:40:51Bye.
00:40:52Bye.
00:40:53Bye.
00:40:54Bye.
00:40:55Bye.
00:40:56Bye.
00:40:57Bye.
00:40:58Bye.
00:40:59Awkward.
00:41:00Awkward.
00:41:01I can't.
00:41:02I can't.
00:41:11Ahh dude.
00:41:19Jane, why did you really come here?
00:41:30You're starting to sound like Roy.
00:41:34I don't know.
00:41:42Things just haven't been right at home for a while.
00:41:54I should move out. You know?
00:41:59Get my own place.
00:42:05Then I broke up with Floyd, my boyfriend, or ex-boyfriend.
00:42:19I'm not in the mood right now. I don't need to have sex all the time.
00:42:25Yeah, like I haven't heard that from you before.
00:42:30It's not just the sex, Jane. It was like you were somewhere else during dinner tonight.
00:42:36I've got a lot on my mind.
00:42:39Well, like what?
00:42:42You don't understand.
00:42:45You're right. I don't understand. I can't. You won't even let me in.
00:42:51Look, maybe it'd just be easier if we didn't see each other anymore.
00:42:56Life is too short for all this aggravation.
00:43:00I'm gonna get something to drink. Leave your key on the way out.
00:43:07He was just too...
00:43:12immature.
00:43:42I'm gonna get some more wine. Alright?
00:44:42You're welcome.
00:45:33So?
00:45:40It was nice.
00:45:51I'll be right back.
00:46:00So, Cat got your tongue?
00:46:04No, I'm fine.
00:46:07Okay.
00:46:10You missed breakfast.
00:46:11I've already eaten.
00:46:16You guys ready to go?
00:46:17Yeah.
00:46:20Jane, why don't you stay with me for a minute?
00:46:23Sure.
00:46:25Okay, well, let's meet at the museum in half an hour?
00:46:28Yes. Make it an hour. I've got some things I want to do.
00:46:32Okay. Let's go.
00:46:46I should have known better. I mean, he's married.
00:46:50It's not a disease, you know.
00:46:51Well, he has a daughter. I'm just so...
00:46:54Look, what happened happens. And I'm sure he feels the same way, so don't worry about it.
00:47:01I'm not some slam-bam-thank-you-ma'am type of person.
00:47:04Of course not. And I'm sure Adam doesn't think that way, so...
00:47:09I don't know. I just wish I could get my life straightened out.
00:47:15What do you mean?
00:47:18When my dad tells me I should crawl out of my shell.
00:47:23Well, you can't crawl out of your shell unless you know what's keeping you stuck, so...
00:47:31What are you afraid of?
00:47:32Nothing.
00:47:35Look, Jane, something's bugging you.
00:47:42Tell me about your mother.
00:47:47There's not much to tell. I don't remember her.
00:47:51Yes, you do.
00:47:52What?
00:47:54What happened that night.
00:48:00I don't know what you're talking about.
00:48:09I was five years old.
00:48:14A loud voice woke me up.
00:48:20You! How could you?
00:48:24Why'd you marry me like I'm a child?
00:48:26Just calm down!
00:48:27It's not even about you.
00:48:28Who would've thought we were another woman?
00:48:30You're sick.
00:48:32Why'd you do this to me?
00:48:35No! No, Steve! No!
00:48:45I'm sorry.
00:48:50I thought I would change after we were married and Jane was born.
00:48:55Please forgive me.
00:48:58Please.
00:49:01I'm so sorry.
00:49:04I didn't mean to hurt you.
00:49:11She ran outside.
00:49:14We got to the car.
00:49:18She wasn't a very good driver anyway.
00:49:24Dad went out to borrow a neighbor's car.
00:49:31But before he could leave,
00:49:36the police called.
00:49:39I think she said that she was in an accident.
00:49:46And that he killed her.
00:49:53Dad never did that sort of thing.
00:50:02He killed her.
00:50:07It was his fault.
00:50:11And I hate him.
00:50:15Steve.
00:50:18You need to call your dad and talk to him about this.
00:50:20No way.
00:50:22Steve.
00:50:25I hate him.
00:50:31Don't say anything you might regret.
00:50:34This is my hand to borrow to apologize.
00:50:41Steve.
00:51:04Hello?
00:51:18Dad?
00:51:20Honey? Are you okay?
00:51:22No, I'm not okay.
00:51:24I'm pissed off.
00:51:26Why did you tell me Mom ran off that night crying because she found out you were a faggot?
00:51:30Watch your mouth!
00:51:33How could you call me that?
00:51:35Don't change the subject.
00:51:37You killed Mom.
00:51:39You murdered her.
00:51:42Why?
00:51:44Why?
00:51:45Jane, I didn't kill her.
00:51:49I loved her.
00:51:52It's just I couldn't love her the way she needed to be.
00:51:57How did you find this out?
00:51:59I was there.
00:52:01I saw the fight.
00:52:04I watched her storm out the door.
00:52:11I was up.
00:52:17Why?
00:52:18Why?
00:52:21Why did this happen?
00:52:24I didn't get to know her.
00:52:26Jane, no.
00:52:27Please, honey.
00:52:28Slow down.
00:52:30Take some deep breaths.
00:52:33Tell me you're okay.
00:52:35Deep breaths.
00:52:39Daddy.
00:52:44Jane, I'm sorry I didn't tell you.
00:52:51I guess I was trying to protect you.
00:53:01Am I?
00:53:02I mean, you're my real dad, aren't you?
00:53:07Yes, honey.
00:53:08I am your real dad.
00:53:15Mom must have done it.
00:53:19What happened?
00:53:22Jane, I wanted to spare you this,
00:53:26but now I've got to tell you something.
00:53:33It's going to hurt you, but, Jane, you know I love you.
00:53:43Well, you were an accident.
00:53:49What?
00:53:51Jane, I did love your mother,
00:53:55but we never made love except once after a New Year's party.
00:54:05I was very drunk.
00:54:06I don't remember much of what happened.
00:54:10But I believe you're...
00:54:16Oh, God, this is so difficult for me to say.
00:54:21I believe she took advantage of the fact that I was drunk
00:54:27and she was able to excite me.
00:54:30I don't understand.
00:54:34You mean you and Mom never had sex except for this one time?
00:54:37That's right.
00:54:40I couldn't get aroused.
00:54:42I thought it would pass.
00:54:43I even went to see a doctor,
00:54:46which is ironic because that's where I met Bill.
00:54:50He was a year older than I was.
00:54:53He invited me to his house for a drink,
00:54:56and one thing led to another,
00:54:58and soon we were in bed.
00:55:04That's when I found out I was gay.
00:55:08I was very confused back then,
00:55:10very unsure of what to do.
00:55:12I had made this commitment to your mom.
00:55:17Things were different, you know,
00:55:21at work and everywhere.
00:55:24Daddy, I'm sorry.
00:55:27I mean what I said.
00:55:31What happened to Bill?
00:55:33After the accident, I stopped seeing him.
00:55:37I wanted to spend my energy trying to raise you.
00:55:39Jane, I'm...
00:55:41Daddy, I love you.
00:55:44I'll always love you.
00:55:47I love you, sweetheart.
00:55:53Jane, how's the trip going?
00:55:57It's great.
00:55:59It's weird, you know.
00:56:01The other guys are great.
00:56:05I'll call you when I get back.
00:56:10I love you. Bye.
00:56:13Goodbye, sweetheart.
00:56:21Is she okay?
00:56:24Yeah.
00:56:26She's fine.
00:56:29I should have told her sooner.
00:56:34But she knows now.
00:56:56Hey, I just saw Jane in the alley.
00:57:12Is she okay?
00:57:14She'll be fine.
00:57:17You look like you could use another cup of coffee.
00:57:19We'll miss the others.
00:57:20It's almost time to meet them at the museum.
00:57:22It's Sunday.
00:57:23The museum doesn't open until noon.
00:57:24Okay.
00:57:33Why didn't you mention it being Sunday earlier?
00:57:36You know, when we were all here having breakfast?
00:57:39To tell you the truth, I was trying to figure out what day it is myself.
00:57:43But time marches on.
00:57:46You're a strange dude, you know that?
00:57:48Sometimes I wonder.
00:57:50Yeah, I've heard that before.
00:57:53Sam, when are you going to come out?
00:57:58What is it with everyone?
00:58:00First the towel head, now you.
00:58:02I'm not gay, okay?
00:58:08Maybe I'm a little bisexual.
00:58:11You know, kind of gay.
00:58:14You mean like being kind of pregnant?
00:58:16Kind of gay my ass.
00:58:19Look, no one's going to love you unless you can learn to love yourself.
00:58:25And you can't love yourself unless you accept yourself.
00:58:30Don't you understand?
00:58:32You're a gay man.
00:58:34Still a man.
00:58:36Just gay.
00:58:38Anyway, just trust your instincts.
00:58:42If your friends have a problem with you being gay, then screw them.
00:58:46And your mom, just give your mom some time.
00:58:50She'll always love you.
00:58:53What else matters?
00:58:55What else matters?
00:58:57About my job, the people I know.
00:59:00No, you don't have to wear a poster and you don't have to tell the whole world.
00:59:06Stop lying to yourself and the people that are most important to you.
00:59:13It's that easy?
00:59:15No.
00:59:17It's not easy.
00:59:19It's damn hard.
00:59:22No one said that life is easy or that life is fair.
00:59:27You just play the cards that you're told.
00:59:31Sam.
00:59:38Is there something you want to tell me?
00:59:48I'm gay.
00:59:53Yeah.
00:59:55I'm gay.
00:59:57See, that didn't kill you, did it?

01:00:16The museum doesn't open for another hour.

01:14:42Eddie Ray it was what 24 years old when he died well maybe after you die you
01:14:47continue to age that's the case I'll be a hell of a lot older wouldn't I I'd be
01:14:51what 72 all right I don't know but that woman back in Fairview she acted like

01:17:31and I learned
01:17:34I can't find those answers
01:17:37in the arms of another woman or some far-off distant place what I know now in
01:17:43my heart
01:17:45is that the greatest gift in the world

01:21:40really yeah this girl was babysitting a four-year-old boy and she was supposed
01:21:44to be home watching him well she took him with her on this date
01:21:47and the wreck threw him from the car they landed in a big haystack
01:21:51girl wasn't hurt too bad but the boy was in real bad shape
01:21:54touch and go remember my mom telling me about it the parents took him down to a
01:21:58children's hospital down south they moved away a couple months later to
01:22:01be closer to the hospital I don't know if he recovered but I

01:22:15Irene Eddie Ray's cousin she's still alive
01:22:18the little boy's real name was Michael Raymond and uh
