After helping to launch six commercial telecommunication satellites in Florida, the Falcon 9 rocket returned to our planet as part of a test to see if some of the equipment is reusable.

Representatives from SpaceX are quoted as saying: “This test confirms that the Falcon 9 booster is able consistently to re-enter from space at hypersonic velocity, restart main engines twice, deploy landing legs and touch down at near zero velocity.”

Although the booster wasn’t recovered, enough data was collected so that future landings of the Falcon 9 rocket are expected to be successful

One improvement that SpaceX hopes to make is to cut down on the ice and spots that block the camera’s view, so that a better visual assessment can be made on upcoming missions.

According to SpaceX, reusable rockets could make space travel up to a hundred times cheaper.
