The West View News, a New York paper that serves the city’s West Village, recently published a piece bearing a title that called President Obama the N-word.

It was meant to make a point about how ingrained racism remains in American society and accompanied an article written by James Lincoln Collier on the matter.

George Capsis, the editor of the paper, said, “In this article…Jim reminded me that The New York Times avoids using the word which convinced me that WestView should.”

Capsis also noted that the author wanted to include the term to “shock us into accepting that there are people who believe and use this outrageous word.”

Despite the recommendations of his editorial staff, Capsis went ahead with it.

Beneath it he published the opinion of a columnist who deeply opposed the decision.

The fact that a rebuttal was offered and that the main article was in support of Obama while criticizing his extreme right wing detractors didn’t ease the tensions of many.

One reader commented, "I can see his point but the fact that is a headline in this paper that represents the West Village is disgusting."
