Finland victim of cyber-espionage by unnamed foreign powers

Finland has said it was the victim of two separate cyber-espionage campaigns by hackers working for two foreign powers.

The attacks were reportedly against the country’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Finnish Security Intelligence Service.

The identity of the two countries involved has not been revealed.

“We know countries are behind these crimes….We have an idea of who could be responsible but we won’t publicly comment on that,” said Antti Pelttari from the Finnish Security Intelligence Service.

Local media has been reporting that Russia and China are involved in the campaign, which was detected by Finnish authorities after a tip-off from Sweden in early 2013.

The second more sophisticated attack was discovered while looking into the first case.
