We don’t think too much about fire risks when working on a laptop.

Fire crews in Bucks County, Pennsylvania are currently investigating a case involving a laptop that exploded.

72-year-old Loretta Luff had been using the 6-year-old computer inside her Langhorne home. Suddenly Luff smelled something odd and heard a strange sound.

“She says it all started with a smell coming from her computer before battery acid and flaming debris went right into her face.” [Via WTFX]

Reflecting on the incident, Luff commented “It blew up. It flipped my computer back and the battery pack and all came out this way. The next thing I knew, my shirt was on fire, I grabbed that and took that off and I think that’s when I singed my hair."

She used the blouse in addition to water from her dog’s bowls to extinguish the flames.

Luff believes she stepped on the hot battery. She was taken to the hospital following the explosion to be treated for chemical burns to her arm, foot, chest and face. She has since been released.

Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company Chief Frank Farry says the battery pack ‘went off like a bomb’ and sent debris up to 8 feet away. Investigators are looking into whether or not a replacement battery that was purchased three years ago might be the cause of the blast.
