In September, Local Motors will attempt to build a 3D-printed electric vehicle.

Adding to the challenge, the company hopes to complete the project in just 5 days at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago. This past April, Local Motors held a contest to outsource the design so word of the 3D-printed vehicle would spread and people would start expressing interest.

Over 200 entries poured in. Community members and a panel of judges chose 7 final designs for the ‘3D Printed Car Design Challenge’. Most of the finalists submitted streamlined, minimalist vehicles, but in the end, a design called Strati, with its sports car-like appeal was chosen as the winner.

The final car will reportedly look a lot like the contest-winning version, but may have elements of the other top designs thrown in. Strati has a retractable roof and looks to be a cross between a vintage buggy and a superfast race car.

Strati’s creator received 5 thousand dollars for the top-ranking design. Lonnie Love, who is the Robotics and Manufacturing Systems Research Group Leader at Oak Ridge National Laboratory remarked the “Design offers an excellent balance between innovation, complexity and practicality. It has good 3D lines and the retractable roof is really cool."
