00:29Hey, hey, Joe. Look who's coming.
00:37Yeah, that's what I call a real fine-looking woman.
00:42Yeah, you mind your manners, because she's a married woman.
00:45Hi, Ms. Edwards. This is a real pleasure, ma'am.
00:51Hello, horse. Hello, little Joe.
00:54My pleasure, ma'am.
00:55Uh, little Joe, why don't you see after Ms. Edwards' horse while I help her down?
00:58Yeah, well, little brother, why don't you see after her horse while I help her down?
01:02All right.
01:09Joyce.
01:10Ben.
01:11Oh.
01:12Oh, Ben. Oh, it's so good to see you again.
01:16It's wonderful seeing you. Uh, you'll stay for supper.
01:19Adam, you remember Mrs. Edwards?
01:21Hello, Adam.
01:22I remember her. I just wasn't speaking because I was so busy looking.
01:27You Cartwrights certainly know how to please a woman.
01:30Joe, run in and tell Hoppsing we'll have a guest for supper.
01:32Right, fine.
01:33Oh, uh, Ben, I...
01:34Adam, Adam.
01:35Uh, down in the cellar by the north wall are two cases of lapid.
01:38Bring up a couple of bottles there.
01:39Yes, sir.
01:40Now, look, you've come all this way, surely you can stay for a little while.
01:43Now, we need a lady in this house.
01:45You know, I've got these three grown sons, and somebody has to teach them manners.
01:49Now, please, come here.
01:51All right, but just for a little while.
02:00I wouldn't go in there if I was you, Mrs. Edwards.
02:03It's nothing, Ben. He's just our new hired hand.
02:06He must be lost.
02:08Pay no attention to him.
02:10Suit yourself, ma'am.
02:12Only Mr. Edwards ain't gonna like this.
02:14Ezekiel, you can tell Mr. Edwards anything you want to,
02:19but Mr. Cockright is an old friend, and I'm going inside.
02:23Anything you say, ma'am.
02:28But I'll be waiting for you.
02:49Ezekiel!
03:20Your house is so attractive, Ben.
03:22It gets nicer with the years.
03:25It's been years since you've been in this house, Joyce.
03:27Yes, I know.
03:29I've missed seeing it.
03:32I've missed seeing you.
03:35All of us have.
03:40How's Tom?
03:43All right.
03:45Oh, all right.
03:51Just all right?
04:00How is he, really?
04:03He's still bitter.
04:05He's been bitter ever since the accident.
04:10All day long, he just follows me around in his wheelchair.
04:14And every night, in front of Ezekiel, he calls me names.
04:19He says the most awful things.
04:22Ezekiel, the man outside, the hired hand?
04:26He's more than just that.
04:30Tom spends half the night drinking and gambling with his hired hand.
04:33Drinking and gambling? I thought the accident left him incapacitated.
04:37Only from the waist down.
04:40Tom drinks himself into a stupor.
04:44And Ezekiel carries him upstairs.
04:48He never knocks.
04:50He just brings him right into the room.
04:53And he puts him down on the bed next to me.
04:57And he straightens up.
04:59And he looks at me, lying there.
05:02And he says,
05:04And he says,
05:06Good night, Mrs. Edwards.
05:08And goes.
05:10Every night, it's this.
05:12But last night...
05:18Usually, Tom can't turn over.
05:20But somehow, last night, he managed to.
05:24I woke up.
05:26And I saw him bending over me.
05:28With a carving knife in his hand.
05:31He didn't move. He just...
05:33He just sort of smiled at me.
05:37He's so beautiful.
05:40I can't bear to think of my going first.
05:43Joyce, surely you must know Tom meant no harm.
05:47I don't know.
05:49He's always talking about death.
05:51His death. My death.
05:56I, uh... I've got to go.
05:58Joyce, please, stay.
06:01I can't, Ben.
06:03Oh, Tom will be all right.
06:09If only he could find something to do to take his mind off himself.
06:13He...
06:15Oh, I... I've got to go.
06:19I've got to go.
06:29Lohas, would you get Mrs. Edwards to us, please?
06:31Right, Paul.
06:34Joyce.
06:36I don't like the idea of his following you.
06:38It's all right, Ben. He'll keep his distance.
06:44I'll ride along partway with you.
06:50Here you are, Mrs. Edwards.
06:52Thank you, Lohas.
07:17Well, I heard once it was Pa's gun that hit him.
07:20Well, that's a lie.
07:22Eat your supper, both of you, and stop talking about it.
07:24Look, I didn't mean he hit him on purpose. I meant he hit him accidental.
07:27Well, that's two lies.
07:29That's not what they say in town.
07:31Well, that's Mr. Edwards, Joe.
07:33Sure he blames Paul. He claims he crippled him.
07:35Well, did he or didn't he?
07:37He did not.
07:39Well, how do you know? You weren't even there.
07:41I was there an hour later.
07:43They were out after Wild Mountain Sheep.
07:45Mr. Edwards slipped and fell to a ledge,
07:47and Paul risked his life trying to save him.
07:49He got right at him.
07:51They were climbing up off that ledge when they fell to another ledge,
07:53and that's when the gun went off, getting him in the spine.
07:55Whose gun?
07:57Mr. Edwards' gun.
07:59All right, then why does he blame Pa?
08:03Eat your supper. It's getting cold.
08:05Hello, boys.
08:07I'm sorry I opened the wine, Pa.
08:09I didn't know she was leaving so soon.
08:11Well, we haven't had any of this since Christmas.
08:15Yeah, it's a miracle.
08:17This wine, imprisoned in this bottle for 20 years,
08:21and each year it seems to grow better.
08:23Yeah, well, I'm sorry Miss Edwards couldn't make the dinner tonight,
08:26but I'm sure glad to be taking part of this wine.
08:28And I'm sure glad to be taking part of this wine.
08:30And I'm sure glad to be taking part of this wine.
08:32Boys, I need your help.
08:35What do you think Tom Edwards could do?
08:40What do you mean, Pa?
08:42Well, they're out of money.
08:45He's squandered everything they ever had.
08:48They owe everybody, and he's always gambling.
08:51That Zeke fellow, does he live with them?
08:56I'm sorry, Pa, I wouldn't want you to talk with him about that.
09:00I'm sorry, Pa, I wouldn't want you to talk with him about that.
09:04He not only lives with them, but they owe him too.
09:07Well, what about Virginia City? Maybe he could clerk somewhere.
09:10You ever talk with him?
09:12Every time he opens his mouth, it's like poison poured out.
09:15Now, Hoss, this was once a wonderful man, but he was struck down.
09:18Life struck him down.
09:19Pa, I didn't mean to offend you.
09:21They have a pretty good flow of water on their place, haven't they?
09:24Who are we to say that if we were struck down, we wouldn't be pouring out poison too?
09:29Now, what were you saying about water?
09:31Oh, well, I was thinking that if there's no mill around,
09:34and they have a pretty good stream there,
09:36we could rig up a water wheel,
09:39build a small millhouse, they could grind grain.
09:42That's a wonderful idea.
09:45A wonderful idea!
09:47Adam, I want to drink a toast to you.
09:49Hey, Pa, can we drink to him too? He's a mighty bright fellow.
09:52Downright bright, and a real pride and joy to the Cartwrights.
09:55Well, thank you, gentlemen.
10:19Take care of my horse.
10:22Anything you say, Miss Edwards.
10:30Well, did you have a pleasant ride?
10:33Yes.
10:35I hope so.
10:37At least that will compensate a little for all that you have to put up with.
10:46Darling, I know it's dreadful of me to make such a fuss when you go out,
10:51but you have no idea how awful it is for me to sit here alone without you.
10:59Let me kiss you.
11:08Your skin is so lovely.
11:11Your cheeks are pink.
11:13Kiss?
11:16I'm awfully tired. I think I'll go up to bed.
11:20You told me where you've been.
11:23I, uh, went to see the Cartwrights.
11:30Why?
11:32To complain about your husband?
11:34Tom, please don't start that again.
11:36I love you. I'll never leave you. You know that.
11:40I expect Ben received you very warmly, didn't he?
11:43Did you get any money out of him?
11:45Tom, please.
11:47He's very rich. You're very attractive. We need money.
11:51Yes, I did go about money.
11:53You know that property that my father left me in San Francisco?
11:57Well, Ben sometimes goes to San Francisco,
11:59and I thought that he might sell it for me.
12:09Darling, what about that property your father left you in San Francisco?
12:14What do you mean?
12:15Five acres. That should be worth quite a lot, wouldn't it, Ezekiel?
12:19Now, Mr. Edwards, you don't want to go gambling your wife's good land.
12:22Oh, no. I'm doing it for her.
12:25How's that, Mr. Edwards?
12:27Well, if she hates you, this way she could get rid of you.
12:32Now, Ms. Edwards, you don't want to get rid of me,
12:35close as I've been to your husband.
12:37How would that get rid of him?
12:39I bet the whole five acres against all we owe Ezekiel.
12:42If he loses, then we don't owe him anything, and he clears out.
12:48Go ahead.
12:50Bet the land.
12:52You surprise me, Mr. Edwards.
12:54You think I stay with you just for money?
12:57You think I take care of you?
12:59You think I carry you up them stairs night after night
13:01and put you to bed just for money?
13:04Now, believe you me, Mr. Edwards, I know I ain't fit to tie your shoe,
13:08but just living with you, sir, and Ms. Edwards here,
13:11I've grown to you two like it was home almost.
13:15No, son, no offense, man, but I can't take that bet.
13:18All right, all right.
13:20I'll play you for $5.
13:25Will you lend me $5?
13:35You did give me a scare, Ms. Edwards.
13:37I thought I was gonna lose my home.
13:41Good night, Ms. Edwards.
13:50Good night.
14:12Morning, Tom.
14:14What brings you around?
14:16Well, I was, uh, riding into town.
14:19About to drop by.
14:21To see me, to see my wife.
14:24To see you both, Tom.
14:27Sit on the porch if you want to.
14:29She's picking grapes.
14:31Good morning, Mr. Cartwright.
14:37Yeah, that's a...
14:39It's a mighty fine stream you have here on the property.
14:43I hear my wife paid you a little visit yesterday.
14:47It's good to see her.
14:49Good to see you, Tom.
14:51Is it?
14:53Tom, I'll be straight-out honest with you.
14:55I made a definite point of stopping by here this morning.
14:58I have a little business proposition I'd like to talk over with you.
15:02How would you like to make some good money?
15:04There ain't much Mr. Edwards can do, ailing chronic the way he is.
15:09Tom...
15:11I want to build something on your property.
15:14A money-making operation.
15:16When I get my money out, plus 15%, then it's yours to own.
15:21Ha! Did you hear that?
15:23My wife goes to see my best friend, and suddenly I'm in business. I'm rich.
15:29What's the proposition, Mr. Cartwright?
15:31A mill. A grain mill.
15:33Now, there's none around here for miles, and people around here need a mill.
15:36Now, you have the water.
15:38I have a son who knows how to put that water to work.
15:40What are you doing? Trying to get something from me?
15:43Tom, I said this is a business proposition.
15:45Now, I'll put up the money, and my sons and I will build that mill for you.
15:49What are you getting, Mr. Cartwright?
15:51Water rights forever?
15:54I've already said what I want.
15:57My investment back, plus 15%.
16:01If I have that, I'm satisfied.
16:03You mean...
16:09Hmm.
16:12That sounds pretty good.
16:14Not to me, it don't.
16:16Would you be good enough to let Mr. Edwards make his own deal, if he so sees fit?
16:20Of course, sir. Excuse me, excuse me.
16:22Never mind, Zeke, Ben. We've been thrown together so much, we're almost like partners.
16:27My only thought, sir, is for Mr. Edwards.
16:29That's enough, Zeke. Now, you keep out of this.
16:31Mr. Edwards, we have all those people coming around, all that excitement.
16:34You don't hardly sleep nights, as it is.
16:38Tom, what do you say?
16:41Have we an agreement, or haven't we?
16:4415%, huh?
16:4615%. Now, you shake on that, we'll have that mill up in a week.
16:49You make it 10%?
16:51No.
16:5312 1⁄2?
16:5512 1⁄2.
16:57Oh, I'm mighty glad, Tom.
16:59Boy, that mill will be a great thing for everybody.
17:01What do you think of that, Ezekiel? Wait till I tell Joyce.
17:03Well, all right, Tom. Let's be getting on it to town.
17:06Oh, say, we can start bringing the stuff in tomorrow, if that's all right.
17:09Oh, do that. You do that, Ben.
17:11Ben.
17:14We'll be friends again?
17:17Let me tell you, Ben, in my heart...
17:20When I'm not in pain, I mean.
17:22In my heart, I never blame you.
17:24It was my gun, my fault.
17:27Bless you for coming.
17:34Good-bye tomorrow, Tom.
17:36Fine, Ben.
17:39Thought you owned me, didn't you?
17:41Thought I couldn't even get up to bed without you, huh?
17:43I'll show you.
17:45I'll take you to your wife, Mr. Edwards.
17:47Would you like to go pick grapes with your wife?
17:49I'll make me so much money, I'll hire me a nurse from San Francisco.
17:52It'll be a real one, too. Not just somebody like you.
17:54I wouldn't get excited, Mr. Edwards.
17:56You're a real man.
17:58You're a real man.
18:01I wouldn't get excited, Mr. Edwards.
18:03You're gonna have another bad night.
18:05You hope I have another bad night, isn't that it?
18:07You hope I'll have to call for you.
18:09Where are you taking me?
18:11To your wife, Mr. Edwards. I'm gonna take you to your wife.
18:13You forget about my wife, you hear me?
18:15You get her right out of your head!
18:21Take me back in the house.
18:24Yes, sir.
18:31Ben!
18:33Joyce!
18:36Ben!
18:38Oh, how wonderful to see you.
18:40Does Tom know you're here?
18:42Yes, I just talked to him.
18:44I think I have some very good news for you.
18:46I suggested to Tom that we build a gristmill here and that he run it.
18:50What did he say?
18:52He's all for it. He likes the idea.
18:54Oh, Ben!
18:56Oh, I'm so happy.
18:58If only this could make Tom happy, too.
19:00Remember the way he used to be?
19:04I'll help you pick some grapes.
19:10Ben.
19:12What you're doing is the most wonderful thing anyone could do for us.
19:16Now, wait a minute. You're forgetting I'm making a profit, too.
19:20I know what you're doing.
19:29Ben, about...
19:31About yesterday,
19:33I've...
19:35I've never complained to you before, have I?
19:38I've never complained to anyone.
19:40But all these years,
19:42I've been dying, too.
19:46I know, Joyce.
19:48Sometimes I think it would have been better for him if I'd left him.
19:51My health, my...
19:53Just the sight of me seems to...
19:55My health, my...
19:57Just the sight of me seems to infuriate him at times.
20:01Just the sheer sight of me.
20:03Just...
20:05Just your beauty.
20:07Oh, Ben.
20:09I forgot about that a long time ago.
20:12He's a cripple.
20:14And I'm a cripple, too.
20:17How are you a cripple?
20:19Because I don't stand up to him.
20:21Because I take every terrible thing he says to me.
20:25Sometimes he...
20:27He eyes me like a stranger would.
20:29He says things he shouldn't.
20:31This may all come to an end.
20:33You know, he was so happy when I left him.
20:35I think the mill may change everything.
20:37Oh, I hope so.
20:39It's got to be a fine mill.
20:41You know, Adam's very clever with that sort of thing.
20:43He's made some wonderful drawings.
20:45You're so fortunate in your boys.
20:49Three fine sons.
20:51They could be half your life.
20:53Only half.
20:55Sons can't be everything.
21:03Did you notice how blue the mountains were this morning?
21:08Yes, I...
21:10I saw them.
21:24Well, it's starting to look very good.
21:26Coming along fine, Pa.
21:28Hey, Pa, when's Hoss going to get here with those millstones?
21:30He'll be real soon.
21:32Well, we'll be ready for him any time now.
21:34That's fine.
21:38Oh, Zekew.
21:40Glad to see you pitching in.
21:42I wouldn't want to give you any wrong notions, Mr. Cartwright.
21:45I'm just doing this to please Mr. Edwards.
21:47I still don't think any good's going to come of it.
21:49Well.
21:51Why don't you give it a chance?
21:53Well, I'll give it a chance.
21:55I'm just wondering one thing.
21:57What's really in this for you, Mr. Cartwright?
22:00Hey, Pa?
22:02Pa, send me in some more nails, will you?
22:05Yeah, coming right up.
22:10But it looks so complicated.
22:12How did you ever figure it out?
22:14Well, it's really not original.
22:16The design is actually a combination.
22:18Some of it comes from the old New England mills,
22:21and some comes from the wheels of the miners built here in Nevada.
22:24As you see, we've built a flume leading to the top of the wheel.
22:27Now, at the proper time, we'll divert the water back through the flume.
22:30It'll pass over the top of the wheel, striking the blades,
22:33which will turn the wheel, which will drive the shaft,
22:36which will turn the upper millstone, and presto, you're grinding wheat.
22:39It's really quite simple.
22:41Oh, Adam, I think you're absolutely marvelous.
22:43Well, actually, the idea is thousands of years old.
22:45But imagine what it meant to man before the steam age.
22:48Pa should be here soon with the millstones,
22:50which reminds me, I'd better see our little Joes coming along.
22:53Oh, and I'd better see about Tom.
22:56Hey, Professor.
22:57Huh?
22:58Come here.
23:01That's a mighty pretty assistant you got there.
23:04Meaning what?
23:08Oh, you're a sly one.
23:10I was watching you, standing close,
23:12bending over, sniffing her hair.
23:14I know you bright boys.
23:16How would you like to shut your filthy face, huh?
23:19Well, I'm just doing you a favor, friend.
23:21Don't let her husband catch you.
23:23He's still handy with a rifle.
23:25Ezekiel!
23:27Come get me!
23:30Excuse me, Professor.
23:32I was so busy watching you and Mrs. Edwards,
23:35I forgot all about her husband.
23:39I don't know what you're up to.
23:41But don't make any trouble for Mrs. Edwards.
23:51It's about time you got here, Professor.
23:53Did some of the heavy work.
23:54Don't call me that.
23:56What's the matter with you?
23:57Just don't call me Professor.
24:00Here, let me get that.
24:02I'm perfectly capable of doing this myself.
24:04Anything you say, ma'am.
24:06Wheel me down there.
24:07I want to see how things are going.
24:09Yes, sir.
24:10You think it'd be all right?
24:11All right?
24:12Why shouldn't it be all right?
24:13Come on.
24:14You mean the ground's so rough?
24:16Your leg's being so weak?
24:18Must you always remind him of that?
24:20I didn't mean no harm, ma'am.
24:22I was just thinking.
24:24Come on! Come on!
24:30You know, Adam, I gotta hand it to you.
24:32I think this thing's gonna work.
24:34Thanks.
24:35I, uh...
24:37I, uh...
24:38I'm sorry about blowing off all that steam a while ago.
24:41Yeah, well, that's all right.
24:42I'm used to taking all the guff around this family.
24:44That's what I'm here for.
24:45Oh, sure.
24:46You're really abused, aren't you?
24:48Here, put this plank up there.
24:51See what I mean?
24:55Got it?
24:56Yeah, why don't you get some light wood?
24:59Well, Ben, you're really making progress.
25:02Moving right along, Tom.
25:04Any reason why I can't be of some help?
25:06Why, not at all.
25:08As a matter of fact, I think I've got the very thing for you.
25:11Ezekiel, move his chair in closer to the wheel.
25:14You see these binder rods?
25:16Yeah.
25:17They need tightening.
25:18Now, here's a wrench. Get to work.
25:20Fine.
25:21Oh, Adam, isn't it wonderful to see Tom working again?
25:25It sure is.
25:27What's the matter?
25:29I just think you have the most wonderful father.
25:33Don't be alarmed, folks. Just a signal.
25:35Signal for what?
25:36The arrival. Look to the east.
25:39Horse Cartwright, charioteer.
25:41Charging up with a ton of millstones.
25:44Come on, horse. Drive him.
25:46No.
25:48Speed back.
25:52Come on. Drive him.
25:55Come on. Drive him.
26:02How was it, horse?
26:03Fine, Tom.
26:04Have any trouble getting this load across the river?
26:06No, a little bit. Been swimming with it.
26:12Can I get that?
26:13Yeah, I got it. I got it.
26:17Well, I don't know about you, Mr. Edwards,
26:19but I always go by the rule you ought to lock the barn
26:22even before the horse gets away.
26:24What are you talking about?
26:26Just a certain party and your wife.
26:33You know what I think I'll do with you?
26:34When this mill is finished, I'll put a rope around your neck
26:36and hang you from one of the rafters just to celebrate.
26:39Mr. Edwards, you know I'm just protecting your interest.
26:43Listen, you filthy snake, I trust my wife.
26:46And I trust Ben Cartwright. He's my friend.
26:49Don't ever again put one of your rotten, suspicious thoughts in my mind,
26:52so help me heaven, I'll kill you.
26:55Your friend, Mr. Edwards?
26:57I wasn't talking about him. I was talking about his son, Adam.
27:05Watch your hands down there with that pole.
27:07All right.
27:08Let me get this under there.
27:09It's heavy.
27:11Easy now.
27:14Easy. Easy.
27:19Okay, let her slide down.
27:21Easy does it. Watch your hands, Pop.
27:24Let her slip.
27:28I ain't saying she did anything, but the point is...
27:31Look, just tell me if you saw anything or you didn't between her and Adam.
27:35Mr. Edwards, I don't want you getting excited.
27:37Never mind about that. Just tell me what you saw.
27:39Well, Adam was...
27:42He was kind of brushing up against her here and there.
27:47Did he touch her?
27:48No, not exactly.
27:52Well, it's his eyes, you know, when she wasn't looking at him.
27:56His eyes was...
27:57Well, you know what I mean.
28:00They're just kind of touching her all over.
28:04Of course, you've got to admit that Adam is a good-looking boy.
28:09With a little bit of luck, we'll have this mill running by tonight.
28:13Tom!
28:14Tom, they think they'll have the wheel going by tonight.
28:16Isn't that wonderful?
28:17Do you know what I think we should have?
28:18A party. And let's dance.
28:20And let's grind the first grain and have the neighbors in.
28:23Oh, wouldn't it be wonderful to have music again?
28:26I bet you'd like to dance, wouldn't you?
28:29Dusty, the music would be enough.
28:31I bet you'd like to dance with Adam.
28:34I beg your pardon?
28:35What's all this between you and Adam?
28:38Between me and Adam?
28:39Ever since the mill started, you've been tagging each other around.
28:43Tom, I don't understand you.
28:44You understand me.
28:45You're a woman, aren't you? You're young, you're lovely.
28:48Don't tell me you don't know what I'm talking about.
28:50Tom, on my word of honor, no such thought for Adam ever entered my mind.
28:54Then why are you so happy?
28:55Why have you been smiling ever since this mill started?
28:58Because of you.
28:59Because I thought it would start your life again, and my life.
29:03You haven't been tagging Adam around?
29:04No.
29:05Brushing against him, leaning against him?
29:08Laughing with him at me?
29:10No.
29:11You have! Both of you!
29:12You've been tagging each other around like a couple of simpering lovebirds!
29:16What's going on?
29:17I don't know.
29:19Looks like Ezekiel has done his work.
29:21Ezekiel, get me out of here!
29:23Excuse me, Miss Edwards.
29:25You got him so upset, I better take him inside and lay him down for a while.
29:29Ezekiel, do I have you to thank for this?
29:32No, ma'am.
29:33I didn't tattle on you, if that's what you mean.
29:36If you come near my wife again, Adam Cartwright, I'll kill you both!
29:39If you come near my wife again, Adam Cartwright, I'll kill you both!
29:51Pa, I'll give you my word.
29:53It's Ezekiel. He's warped and twisted Edwards' mind.
29:56Pa, maybe we'd better stop working the mill.
29:58What, after I lug these stones in here?
30:00We'll finish this mill.
30:01Pa, a man as mixed up as that's liable to kill somebody.
30:06Keep working.
30:09Keep working.
30:17Joyce!
30:19Joyce!
30:21Joyce!
30:23Joyce.
30:25Ben, please go away and leave me alone.
30:28Joyce, come on now.
30:30Let it out.
30:32I've never been so humiliated, so ashamed.
30:35I don't know what to do.
30:39Now take it easy, Joe. You'll ruin the whole thing.
30:42Look, I told you it wouldn't fit, Adam.
30:44You made the shaft too short.
30:46Look, come on, now lift. Now lift, horse.
30:48Dang it, Adam, if I lift anymore, I'm going to lift the whole earth up.
30:51Lift!
30:57Oh, come on, will you, Adam?
31:01Let's call it quits.
31:03Quits?
31:05Yeah, quits. We did enough work today for ten men.
31:06Now, come on, Joe, give me a few more minutes.
31:08I'm hungry, Adam.
31:11Adam, you give me one reason why I ought to break my back.
31:14Because I want to see it work.
31:16I want to see this mill grind wheat.
31:18I want to eat bread from this mill that we built.
31:20You do?
31:22I do.
31:24He does?
31:26He does.
31:28Well, why don't you say so, brother?
31:30Come on, let's get to work.
31:33All right, all together now.
31:34All right, let's go.
31:36One, two, heave.
31:39All right, in she goes.
31:42Hey.
31:44Get the other side over there.
31:46Hey, wait till I get this board up.
31:48Let's go.
31:50One, two, heave.
31:53Heave.
31:55Hey, way to go, brother.
31:57Hey, look, it won't.
31:59Let's get up to the diversion gate.
32:01When I give you the signal, let the water in the flume.
32:02Right.
32:04Hey, Adam, don't you think we ought to wait for Pa?
32:06Pa said to get it done, and that's what we got to do.
32:10Now, get up there and let up that sluice gate when I tell you.
32:13Aye, aye, sir.
32:25All right, horse, let her go.
32:33Hey, it's filling up the flume, Adam.
32:38You all set?
32:40Let her go.
32:47There she comes.
33:02Hey.
33:04Hey, it's working.
33:06It's working.
33:09Old millstone.
33:11Old grind our wheat.
33:13And old wheat make our bread.
33:15And old bread make us as bread as our brother Adam.
33:18Hey, we're in.
33:20Way to go.
33:22We got to get some wheat.
33:29Tom.
33:32Hey, Adam.
33:35Hey, maybe we better get up there.
33:37No.
33:39Come on in, whoever you are.
33:47Well, Cartwright.
33:49What do you want?
33:55The one thing I don't want is people shooting at me without a reason.
33:58I got a reason.
34:00Best reason in the world, my wife.
34:02Where is she?
34:04That's right, where is she?
34:06Miss Edward here's been worried about her.
34:08It ain't good for him to worry.
34:10How should I know where his wife is?
34:12You ought to know where she is.
34:14She's with your father, ain't she?
34:16He run off after her.
34:18Didn't think I knew, did you?
34:20I know.
34:22Zekiel told me.
34:24I know all about your father, too, from a long way back.
34:26It's not the first time he betrayed me.
34:28He shot me in the spine.
34:29I don't know it.
34:31I don't know any such thing.
34:33I know it was you, Cartwright, that caused all my trouble.
34:35Mr. Edwards, you're wrong.
34:37Real wrong.
34:39But I didn't come here to argue with you.
34:41I just came to tell you that your mill is finished.
34:43We got it going.
34:45You think the mill solves everything, don't you?
34:47You know what I'm going to do with your mill?
34:49I'm going to destroy it.
34:51I'm going to burn it to the ground.
34:53Mr. Ben Cartwright, you think he can buy my wife with a mill?
34:55You mock my words.
34:57Before I let him steal my wife,
34:59I'm going to kill you!
35:01Ezekiel,
35:04if you're really his friend,
35:06you'll get these wild ideas out of his head.
35:08I am his friend, Mr. Cartwright.
35:10But what's right is right.
35:12A man has a simple duty to protect his home.
35:24Ben,
35:26I'll always remember this time we've had together today.
35:29It was as though we had escaped to another world.
35:35It's been that way for me, too.
35:41Ben, look!
35:43The wheel is turning!
35:45Oh!
35:47Oh, isn't it beautiful?
35:49It certainly is.
35:51Joyce,
35:53I just can't let you go back.
35:56Ben, please, I...
35:57At least spend the night with us at the Ponderosa.
36:00Don't go back to that house, not right now.
36:03I'm not afraid.
36:05Tom and Ezekiel will be so drunk,
36:07they won't even hear me come in.
36:09Besides, with the mill and all,
36:12perhaps it will be different again.
36:15I've got to give him that chance.
36:20Well,
36:22just to be sure everything's all right,
36:24I'll ride by first thing in the morning.
36:28Ben,
36:30thank you
36:32for everything.
36:57Pa, we've been waiting for you.
36:59Oh? Why?
37:01I was a little worried about you.
37:03It's mighty thoughtful of you, Adam,
37:05but I have a feeling I'm old enough to take care of myself.
37:07I ran into some trouble over at the Edwards' place.
37:09What sort of trouble?
37:11Tom took a shot at me.
37:13No, I can't believe that.
37:15Neither could I.
37:17I went up to the ranch to tell him to finish with the mill,
37:19and he and that hired hand of his were glassy-eyed drunk.
37:21What started it? What brought it on?
37:23I don't know. Tom had some wild idea about you and Joyce
37:25being off someplace together,
37:27and he wanted me to stay away from her.
37:30Where are you going?
37:32I'm going right back to that house as fast as I can make it.
37:34That man touches Joyce.
37:36Pa?
37:38What?
37:42Want me to go with you?
37:44No.
37:46You stay here. I'll handle this alone.
37:48Pa, Tom's suspicion about you and Joyce,
37:50it isn't true, is it?
37:52Suppose it were, Adam.
37:54How would you feel about it?
37:55I'd say that if there ever was a chance,
37:58she couldn't do any better.
38:00I'd be happy for both of you.
38:04Thank you for that, Adam.
38:25That does it, Mr. Edwards.
38:28It's my house now.
38:31Your house.
38:33Your money.
38:35Your...
38:37strength that packs me upstairs and puts me to bed.
38:41This is my wife, Ezekiel. You hear that?
38:43She's my wife!
38:45That's right.
38:47Your wife.
38:50You owe me quite a bit, Mr. Edwards.
38:53I've got a mill.
38:55I'll grind flour.
38:57I'll make money.
38:59Ain't you forgetting something? I want that mill.
39:03I'll pay you some way.
39:05I'll pay you.
39:08Now that you mention it, there is a way.
39:10An easy way.
39:12You like to gamble, don't you?
39:15What are you diving at?
39:17I just want to make one more bet with you.
39:19Just one cut of the cards.
39:21If I lose,
39:23you don't owe me anything.
39:25Mr. Edwards, not a thing.
39:27You get the house back and all the money you owe me.
39:31If I lose,
39:33what do I still own
39:35that you don't already have?
39:41Well, just one cut of the cards can prevent that, Mr. Edwards.
39:44A gambler like you ought to jump at the chance.
39:47Somebody ought to kill you.
39:50Somebody ought to stop you.
39:51Well, maybe somebody will.
39:54But that ain't gonna be you, is it, Mr. Edwards?
40:22Looks like my king beat your nine.
40:28Ezekiel,
40:30would you mind bringing Mr. Edwards up to our room now?
40:33I don't have to do that no more, Ms. Edwards.
40:37That's my room now.
40:39That's where I won't sleep.
40:43Even drunk as you are, you know that's not true.
40:46Isn't it?
40:47Now, you ask your husband.
40:53What does he mean?
40:55Ms. Edwards, there's some things going on here
40:57I think you ought to know about.
40:59Tom, what is he saying?
41:01He won the bet.
41:03What bet?
41:05What do you mean?
41:08Oh, you're just as drunk as he is.
41:10You don't even know what you're saying.
41:11No, he's right, Ms. Edwards.
41:14I won the bet.
41:16Don't tell him to get away from me.
41:18Help me!
41:19I can't help you, Joyce.
41:21I can't help you.
41:23You might as well get used to the idea, Ms. Edwards.
41:26From now on,
41:28there ain't gonna be nobody but...
41:30Get away from me!
41:32You touch me and I'll kill you!
41:34I don't know how I'll do it, but I'll kill you!
41:36I'll kill you!
41:38I'll kill you!
41:39I don't know how I'll do it, but I'll kill you!
41:52Well, she'll get over that
41:54as soon as she calms down a bit.
41:56Will she, Ezekiel?
41:58Are you sure?
42:00Yeah, I'm sure.
42:02Why shouldn't I be?
42:04You heard her.
42:06She said she'd kill you first.
42:07Maybe someone's gonna stop you after all.
42:29Hello, Mr. Cartwright.
42:31You should knock before you come into my home.
42:37Ben!
42:47Get out of here.
42:49No, Mr. Cartwright.
42:51Everything here belongs to me now.
42:53You see, I've taken Mr. Edwards' place.
42:56Even this chair belongs to me.
43:02Come on, Joyce.
43:08Stay right where you are, Mr. Cartwright.
43:10I wouldn't want to have to hurt you.
43:13Now you, lay your pistol belt on that table.
43:37Why are you sitting in that wheelchair?
43:39You're not crippled?
43:41That's right, I'm not.
43:43I just want to get the feel of it.
43:46I want to know how Mr. Edwards felt when he sat in it.
43:51I want to know how Mr. Edwards felt about everything.
44:01Come on, Joyce.
44:03Let's get out of here.
44:05No.
44:06No, Mr. Cartwright, she belongs to me, too.
44:08Don't you understand?
44:10Look, I have it all here.
44:12I kept track of every bet I made with Mr. Edwards.
44:14He gambled away everything.
44:16And tonight, he gambled away his wife.
44:24Well, if you won everything from him,
44:27why did you kill him?
44:31Well, he tried to go back on a bet.
44:33You know a man can't do that.
44:37Ezekiel.
44:40You see,
44:43you're very tired.
44:45Why don't you rest,
44:47and we can talk about it.
44:50Go on, Joyce.
44:52No, no.
44:54No, where's she going?
44:56Just outside.
44:58No, no, she can't.
45:00Now, Mr. Edwards told you that if you tried
45:02to steal his wife, he'd kill you.
45:04I'm the same as Mr. Edwards now.
45:06So if you try to take her,
45:08I'm going to have to kill you.
45:12Oh!
45:37Oh!
45:49Oh!
45:58Oh!
46:00Bill!
46:06Bill!
46:37Joyce, this is...
46:40This is what you want to do.
46:43I've had a lot of time to think this past week,
46:46and while I have friends in Denver,
46:48I'd stay with them,
46:50and then I'll move on east.
46:53All right.
46:55You go,
46:57and after a few weeks or months,
46:59well, then you can decide what you want to do.
47:02Now, whatever you do,
47:03don't sell the mill.
47:05You use it.
47:07Now, Joyce,
47:09when you come back...
47:11Ben,
47:13I love you,
47:17but I could never come back.
47:22I need you.
47:25Remember you told me once
47:27that when little Joe's mother died,
47:29you had to get away,
47:31had to meet new people.
47:33Well, think of it that way.
47:43Well,
47:45I'll drive you into Virginia City.
47:47I'd rather we said goodbye here.
47:49It isn't easy for me, either.
48:03Hey.
