Horror (1963) 67 minutes ~ Color

Egyptian caterer busies himself collecting body parts from young maidens in order to bring Ishtar, an ancient goddess of good and evil back to life. When he has prepared enough parts for the ceremony, he hypnotizes a woman giving an engagement party for her daughter, at which he plans to perform the ancient rites of summons, using the daughter as his final sacrifice.

00:11:56She said he has no boyfriend at all, but all the people seem to like

00:24:35Aren't you excited
00:24:37Yes mother of course I am
00:24:39Only I was reading about all those murders
00:24:42And it sort of takes all the joy out of everything
00:24:46It's all so strange
00:24:49I mean the police not finding any clues or anything
00:24:54It's terrible
00:24:56I just shudder when I think about that butcher
00:25:00That maniac butchering all those girls
00:25:04I wish they could find out who did it and put him where he belonged
00:25:07I won't feel safe until they do
00:25:09Oh it is horrible
00:25:11But Suzette don't be silly
00:25:13I'm sure the police will find him real soon
00:25:15Anyway the dinner party Saturday will take our minds off all this horrible killing
00:25:20Suzette it will be a wonderful surprise
00:25:23I'm sure it will be mother
00:25:25And I can hardly wait
00:25:28Well I better get going
00:25:30Tonight is the weekly lecture on ancient history
00:25:33Good morning
00:25:35Tonight is the weekly lecture on ancient history
00:25:38We're learning about cults of the Egyptian gods
00:25:41Did you say Egyptian gods
00:25:44Well that's a coincidence
00:25:46What kind of a coincidence mother
00:25:48Oh well there's that nicest little man
00:25:51Oh well
00:25:53Call me when you're ready to come home
00:25:55I don't want you out in the streets at night
00:25:57Not with all this terrible killing going on
00:25:59Yes I will mother
00:26:01Bye see you later
00:26:21Hello Helen
00:26:23Dorothy Fremont
00:26:25You are coming to Suzette's party
00:26:28Oh wonderful
00:26:30I have a fantastic treat planned
00:26:32Oh well I found a perfectly delightful caterer who has a marvelous idea
00:26:37Who
00:26:38His name is Fuad Ramses
00:26:40Ramses the first and Ramses the second were pharaohs
00:26:44It was Ramses the second
00:26:47Whose soldiers were drowned in the Red Sea while chasing Moses and the Israelites
00:26:52Now
00:26:54Our mutual interest in the cults of ancient Egypt
00:26:57Takes us tonight to the cult of Ishtar
00:27:00A goddess who was worshipped by the early Egyptian and Assyrian peoples
00:27:05More than 5,000 years ago
00:27:07The worship of Ishtar
00:27:09Or the Mother of the Veiled Darkness as she was sometimes called
00:27:13Was one of the most bloodthirsty religions ever known
00:27:17Though she was worshipped as the goddess of love and beauty
00:27:22Such as Venus or Aphrodite of the Greek and Roman civilizations
00:27:26Hers was an evil love that thrived on violence
00:27:31Now the festival of Ishtar was celebrated at the beginning of spring
00:27:36When life again was given to the land
00:27:39From the swollen body of the Nile River
00:27:42The temple of Ishtar stood high on a hill
00:27:46Overlooking the city of Antioch
00:27:48The goddess was served by 20 beautiful young virgin girls
00:27:52Shammas was Ishtar's high priest and lover
00:27:57He was worshipped as a lesser god by the men of the city
00:28:02On the eve of the feast of Ishtar
00:28:04The people of the city crowded around the temple
00:28:07Here for six wild days and nights
00:28:10The young priestesses would mingle with the men of the city
00:28:14And lust would reign over the land
00:28:17On the seventh day the crowd would gather at the temple for the great feast
00:28:22The blood feast that would give the goddess to the people
00:28:26The young priestesses would be slaughtered on the great altar
00:28:30Their blood would be caught in silver bowls as it ran from their bodies
00:28:35Then certain organs and limbs would be removed
00:28:39And prepared as dishes to serve the people
00:28:42As the last morsel of this horrible feast was eaten
00:28:46The high priestess would show herself rising from the tomb
00:28:51A living incarnation of Ishtar
00:28:54Ishtar arisen in flesh and blood
00:28:58And become part of the people
00:29:16Ishtar
00:29:20Ishtar
00:29:43This custom of the blood feast existed for more than 400 years
00:29:48And was finally abolished by Amenhotep
00:29:51The second of the 15th dynasty
00:29:54It is said that even today
00:29:57There are still followers of this gruesome goddess
00:30:00However it has never been proven
00:30:03And this concludes my lecture on ancient Egyptian cult
00:30:08I hope to see you all again here next week
00:30:18Thank you
00:30:20I'm glad you enjoyed it
00:30:22Thank you sir
00:30:39Oh, how could a race of people actually follow such a vile cult?
00:30:45Well, the ancients had many strange cults, honey
00:30:48You know, an idea based on blood and lust
00:30:51Well, it could spread quickly and civilization founded on superstition
00:30:55Yes, I can see what you mean
00:30:58But to actually eat human flesh
00:31:01Pete, how could they?
00:31:03Oh, come on honey, let's talk about something more pleasant
00:31:06Like, for example, you and me
00:31:08You're coming to my party Saturday night, aren't you?
00:31:11I'm counting on you being my date
00:31:14Oh, I wouldn't miss it
00:31:16Say, I understand your mother went all out on this one, even for her
00:31:19But I will try and make it if I'm not tied up on a case
00:31:23You know, with all these grisly murders going on
00:31:26I'm on 24-hour call
00:31:28Pete, what do you make of all these murders?
00:31:31Isn't there any clue at all?
00:31:33No, not so far
00:31:36You know, we have every man in the force working double duty
00:31:40But nothing's broken so far
00:31:43A little young, young Tony Parker
00:31:45The boy who was with the girl killed on the beach
00:31:47He did give us one clue
00:31:49He said that everything happened so quickly
00:31:52He got a glimpse of gray hair and strange glowing eyes
00:31:57And it seems to be an older man that we're looking for
00:32:00I kind of got one clue of my own
00:32:03It's, uh, I can't seem to make it fit, though
00:32:06It's about a book
00:32:08But I can't, I can't make out the significance of it
00:32:12I feel safer with you working on it, Pete
00:32:15And now I better call Mother for a ride home
00:32:18She gets frantic when I'm out late at night
00:32:21Say, how about me giving you a lift?
00:32:23You know, the mad killer wouldn't bother you being with a policeman
00:32:26And don't worry, it's not a police car
00:32:28I'm not hinting, that would be great
00:32:31Just let me call Mother first
00:32:33Okay
00:32:43Let's stop for a minute, will you?
00:32:46I, I don't know
00:32:49Do you think it's safe?
00:32:52You know, on second thoughts
00:32:54You might be safer with the killer than you are with me
00:32:57Pete, don't make a joke like that
00:33:00I'm not making a joke
00:33:02I'm not making a joke
00:33:04I'm not making a joke
00:33:06I'm not making a joke
00:33:08I'm not making a joke
00:33:10Pete, don't make a joke of it
00:33:13You know I'm not afraid of you
00:33:17And it is such a lovely night
00:33:20Why not?
00:33:22But just for a little while
00:33:24Okay
00:33:30You know
00:33:32This is the first pleasant evening I've had since that first murder
00:33:36I'm just gonna sit back
00:33:39Relax
00:33:42Say
00:33:44Do you know now that I've got you to myself all alone
00:33:47I don't know what to do with you
00:33:50But I got an idea or two
00:33:52Easy, Mr. Officer
00:33:55You're supposed to keep law and order
00:33:59Not break it
00:34:01But you know, you are pretty nice
00:34:04You know something
00:34:06You're pretty nice yourself
00:34:09Hey, Suzette
00:34:11Well, ever since we started these Egyptian culture classes
00:34:15Well, I wanted to say something to you
00:34:18You have, Pete?
00:34:20What is it?
00:34:22Well
00:34:25I don't know, I guess I'm a better policeman than I am a public speaker
00:34:32Then don't speak, Pete
00:34:35Don't speak
00:34:39Don't speak
00:34:44We interrupt this program to bring you a news bulletin
00:34:48Another victim of the recent wave of brutal attacks has been found near death
00:34:53Police say the victim is a young girl about 23
00:34:57Identity has not yet been established
00:35:00The girl's condition is described as critical
00:35:02I'd better get going, honey. They might need me down at the station
00:35:05Oh, Pete
00:35:10Well, that's it. The whole story
00:35:14We found this girl on a deserted street on the outskirts of town
00:35:18She was just about gone, but we did get her to a hospital
00:35:21The whole side of her face was hacked away
00:35:24Pete, if she can identify her attacker, this just might be the break we've been waiting for
00:35:28Well, then let's get over there. Pronto
00:35:31Well, let's go
00:35:33Let's go
00:35:36Thank you, nurse. That'll be all
00:35:39Doctor, we've done all we can
00:35:41Thank you
00:35:43You, uh, may only stay a few minutes. There isn't much time
00:35:47Doctor, has she any chance at all?
00:35:50Not a chance
00:35:52This is one of the most brutal cases I've ever seen
00:35:55I've never seen a case like this
00:35:57I've never seen a case like this
00:35:59I've never seen a case like this
00:36:01I've never seen a case like this
00:36:03This is one of the most brutal cases I've ever seen
00:36:06Her face was hacked away, clear to the bone
00:36:09Her eyes were gouged out
00:36:12She's, uh, lost a great deal of blood in a severe shock
00:36:19It's a terrible thing, such a young girl, too
00:36:21Has anyone notified her folks?
00:36:23So far, we, uh, don't know who she is
00:36:26There was no identification on her when the police brought her in
00:36:31Uh, your missing person bureau is checking
00:36:33I wonder if, uh, they'll let you know when they get a report
00:36:36Can we talk to her?
00:36:38You can try, but please make it short
00:36:45Miss? Can you hear me, Miss?
00:36:51Can you hear me? We're police officers
00:36:55We need your help
00:36:57Yes
00:37:00I can hear you
00:37:03What's your name?
00:37:07Janet
00:37:10Janet Blake
00:37:15Who did this to you, Janet?
00:37:17What did the person look like?
00:37:21Wild eyes
00:37:24He had wild eyes
00:37:30I was walking
00:37:34He came from behind a bush
00:37:39Horrible old man
00:37:43He said it was for E.T.R.
00:37:48E.T.R.
00:37:51Doctor
00:38:01I'm afraid it's all over
00:38:16She never had a chance, poor kid
00:38:20An old man with wild eyes
00:38:24Well, at least it's something
00:38:27What do you make of it, Pete?
00:38:29What do you think she meant by E.T.R.?
00:38:32I don't know
00:38:35It could be somebody's name
00:38:39It's strange, though
00:38:41That almost sounds familiar
00:38:47Well, the killer must have thought she was dead
00:38:50It's a miracle she wasn't
00:38:54Well, okay, let's go make a report
00:38:57And every man over 40 with any kind of a record gets picked up for questioning
00:39:01We might come up with something
00:39:05I pray to God we do
00:39:23E.T.R.
00:39:53E.T.R.
00:40:23E.T.R.

00:43:26Gee, I sure am excited about that party tomorrow night
00:43:30I wonder what mother has planned
00:43:32I don't know, but your mom certainly acts as if she has thought up a real treat
00:43:37I can hardly wait for this party to start tonight
00:43:40Sounds like a real blast
00:43:44It's getting late, I've got to leave
00:43:47I want to finish shopping before it gets too dark
00:43:50Gets me the shivers when I think of that killer loose somewhere
00:43:54I'm going to get dressed
00:43:57Jane Suzette, do you know what type of party your mother has planned?
00:44:02Well, I'm not sure, but I think I have an idea
00:44:06I'm not supposed to know anything about it
00:44:09I think it's going to be an Egyptian feast
00:44:12Egyptian feast?
00:44:13Yes
00:44:14Well, you know, mom knows how interested I've been in Egyptian culture
00:44:18And how I've been going to these lectures every week
00:44:20Doesn't that sound exciting?
00:44:44BANG!
00:44:50BANG!
00:45:14That's right, Trudy Sanders
00:45:17She's been missing since last night
00:45:19Now, look, I want an all-city alarm
00:45:21And I want to know the moment you hear anything
00:45:24I can only hope it's not the killer
00:45:26Yeah
00:45:27You know, Trudy is a good friend of Suzette Fremont's
00:45:30She said she left her house about 7.30 last night
00:45:33And she never got home, Chief
00:45:35Yes, it looks bad
00:45:38But we'll find her
00:45:40Yes, it looks bad
00:45:42But we're doing everything we can to find her
00:45:45Look, I'm going down and checking the suspects that the boys brought in this morning
00:45:49Keep me posted, Pete
00:45:51Will do
00:46:10BANG!
00:46:11BANG!
00:46:15Hello
00:46:16I'd like to speak to Suzette, please
00:46:18Sure
00:46:21Hello, Suzette
00:46:23B. Thorne
00:46:24Yeah, I know, that's why I called
00:46:26You know, we've been so busy around here that I completely forgot about the dinner party
00:46:30You know, I'll have to be late, honey, if you don't mind
00:46:34Yeah
00:46:36No, honey, I'm sorry
00:46:37We haven't had any word on Trudy's yet
00:46:41Yeah, I know you are, but...
00:46:43Well, try and enjoy yourself anyway
00:46:46Say, uh, just what was the big surprise?
00:46:50Hey, that sounds great
00:46:52Real Egyptian-style stuff, huh?
00:46:55Who?
00:46:57Fouad Ramses?
00:46:58No, never heard of him
00:47:01Oh, just like Dr. Flanders' speech, huh?
00:47:05Ishtar?
00:47:07Well, I hope it isn't exactly like Flanders described it
00:47:11But it does sound like fun and I'll get there as soon as I can, honey, okay?
00:47:15Goodbye, now
00:47:19Ishtar
00:47:37Ishtar
00:47:57And now...
00:47:59Now for the flavor, Ishtar
00:48:03The flavor of blood
00:48:05Of the young guts
00:48:07Dead blood
00:48:10To give life to Ishtar
00:48:24Stop your screaming
00:48:26Stop your screaming, you hear me?
00:48:29Give yourself up to the goddess
00:48:31Give yourself up
00:48:38Give yourself up to the goddess, you hear me?
00:48:41Give yourself up
00:49:07Give yourself up
00:49:09Give yourself up
00:49:11Give yourself up
00:49:38Ishtar
00:49:40Ishtar
00:49:42Ishtar
00:49:45Ishtar
00:49:58Dr. Flanders, this is Pete Thornton. Homicide?
00:50:02Yes, sir
00:50:03I have a few questions I'd like you to help me with, sir
00:50:08Now, you gave a talk last week on the blood feast of Ishtar, the Egyptian goddess
00:50:13Yes, sir
00:50:14The festival
00:50:16Well, could you tell me a little bit more about it?
00:50:26Yes, Dr. Flanders, you've been very helpful, thank you
00:50:28And I have just one more question, sir
00:50:31Have you ever heard of a man called Fuad Ramses?
00:50:35He runs a catering service
00:50:38Oh?
00:50:40Ancient, weird, religious rites, huh?
00:50:44Yeah
00:50:46We found a copy of that on the...
00:50:49No, never mind, sir
00:50:50Thank you, doctor
00:50:51Thank you very much
00:50:57Yeah, Lieutenant Thornton
00:50:58Listen, alert all cars
00:51:00Send them to the vicinity of 45th and Lincoln
00:51:02Place called Ramses Catering
00:51:04And listen, get Mason over here fast
00:51:06I think we got our killer
00:52:05Yeah, yeah, yeah
00:52:28What is it, Pete?
00:52:29Listen, Frank, I got a hunch
00:52:30And if it proves right, I hope you got a strong stomach
00:52:33Come on, Frank, maybe in the back.
00:52:57What in the name of all that's holy is that?
00:53:04That's this star, Frank.
00:53:06The goddess of blood.
00:53:09Find the light, Frank.
00:53:25I'm not mistaken, Frank.
00:53:27That's Trudy Sanders.
00:53:33That's Trudy Sanders.
00:54:04Frank.
00:54:06If I'm right,
00:54:08these are the leftovers from the preparation for the feast of Ishtar.
00:54:14That's a blood feast.
00:54:17They take all the young girls
00:54:21and they cook them to satisfy their goddess.
00:54:25They take all the young girls
00:54:30and they cook them to satisfy their goddess.
00:54:33Oh, no.
00:54:38Holy smoke, Frank.
00:54:40We gotta get over to the Fremont house.
00:54:42They're having a dinner party tonight
00:54:44and Fuad Ramsey's is the caterer.
00:54:47Fuad Ramsey?
00:54:49Well, let's get going.
00:54:50Roberts, Nicholson, Harris, get on that phone.
00:54:53Call the Fremonts.
00:54:55For Pete's sake, tell them not to eat anything.
00:54:58Oh, and try not to make Ramsey suspicious until we get there.
00:55:23Good morning.
00:55:33Come on, Nancy.
00:55:35Mr. Ramsey's about to serve.
00:55:38It's my boyfriend calling long distance.
00:55:41I had him. Now we're cut off.
00:55:43I have to wait.
00:55:45Oh, here's our Mr. Ramsey's now.
00:55:48Ah, this is Fremont's.
00:55:50A joyous occasion.
00:55:53But now I must alert your guests.
00:55:59The feast of Ishtar is about to begin.
00:56:05But to make the feast more authentic,
00:56:12I must ask the cooperation of the young lady
00:56:17in whose honor the feast is given.
00:56:19Oh, me? How exciting.
00:56:23Yes, Mrs. Fremont, it is exciting.
00:56:26And now, if the young lady will accompany me into the kitchen,
00:56:33we will prepare the feast, if you please.
00:56:37Oh, I'll bet there never was a party like this.
00:56:41Ah, but there was, Mrs. Fremont,
00:56:445,000 years ago.
00:56:47Oh, 5,000 years ago.
00:56:54Bill?
00:56:56Bill? Bill?
00:56:58Are you there?
00:57:02Where's all the food?
00:57:04Ah, it, uh, is in the garage, my dear.
00:57:08You see, it would be a desecration
00:57:11to bring it to the house before you bless it.
00:57:15Come.
00:57:17And now, my dear,
00:57:19I would like you to be kind to the will of an old man.
00:57:23As you can see, my dear, I am an old man.
00:57:26And I shall never again have the chance
00:57:30to offer a feast to Ishtar.
00:57:33You see, in the ancient days,
00:57:36it required a young maiden like yourself
00:57:40to be kind to the will of an old man.
00:57:44It required a young maiden like yourself
00:57:47to be offered to bless the feast.
00:57:51How do I do that?
00:57:54Well, it is necessary, my dear,
00:57:57to lie outstretched on an altar.
00:58:01I will prepare this table. This table will do.
00:58:04Allow me to help you.
00:58:07And then you, you lie back.
00:58:11You have your head here.
00:58:14And now, my dear, you must raise your arms to the heavens.
00:58:20And you say,
00:58:22O Ishtar, take me unto yourself.
00:58:27And your eyes must be tightly closed.
00:58:32Is that all?
00:58:34Yes, my dear, that is all.
00:58:37And you will make the heart of an old man glad.
00:58:42Like this?
00:58:45This is fun.
00:58:47Dr. Grander said something in his lecture.
00:58:51Hey, you wouldn't sacrifice me on this altar, would you?
00:58:57Of course not, my dear.
00:59:00Of course not. Lie down.
00:59:08And now, my dear, you must repeat the sacred words.
00:59:14Oh, I've forgotten them.
00:59:18I will repeat them for you.
00:59:21First you must close your eyes.
00:59:24Then you say,
00:59:26O Ishtar,
00:59:29take me unto yourself.
00:59:33Take me unto yourself.
00:59:36And your eyes must be tightly closed.
00:59:43O my Ishtar.
00:59:48This is silly.
00:59:50My dear, please.
00:59:52Do not break the heart of an old man.
00:59:55Your guests are waiting.
00:59:57Oh, I'm sorry.
00:59:59I'll do it.
01:00:02O my Ishtar.
01:00:05Your eyes must be tightly closed
01:00:08so that the image of Ishtar is before you.
01:00:12O my Ishtar,
01:00:17take me unto yourself.
01:00:20Now, O Ishtar,
01:00:23the feast has begun.
01:00:26Oh, Mr. Ramses, I must thank our guests again.
01:00:56O my Ishtar.
01:01:14Suzette? Suzette?
01:01:16Suzette, Mrs. Freeman, are you okay, my dear?
01:01:20Oh, dear.
01:01:23Oh, dear.
01:01:26What's this all about?
01:01:29Ramses was the murderer we were looking for.
01:01:32Mrs. Freeman, I'm afraid this feast is evidence of murder.
01:01:37Oh, dear.
01:01:39The guests will have to eat hamburgers for dinner tonight.
01:01:42Did your men catch him when he ran out?
01:01:44No.
01:01:46We will.
01:01:48I'm afraid I've got some very bad news for you, now listen, we found Trudy, and I'm afraid
01:02:02she was another victim of Ramsey's.
01:02:05Oh Pete, what a horrible, oh I pray that it catches you before it's too late.
01:02:16Oh poor Trudy, oh poor Trudy.
01:02:21Try and get some rest, huh, lay down and get some rest, and then when I get back, we'll
01:02:30have other things to talk about, all right?
01:02:33Okay Pete, let's go get her.
01:02:35Please honey.

01:04:41Pete!
01:04:42Hey, what's happened?
01:04:43You guys run into trouble?
01:04:55What happened?
01:04:57You don't know it, buddy.
01:04:59You just did this town the biggest service it's ever had.
01:05:04Sergeant, notify headquarters that the killer is no more.
01:05:11He died a fitting death.
01:05:13The garbage he was.
01:05:16Pete, how in the world did you figure this out anyway?
01:05:20Well, Frank, I kept remembering the name Itar.
01:05:24You know, the name that girl gave us before she died.
01:05:27Well, Suzette Fremont told me that her mother had planned a real Egyptian feast as a surprise for her.
01:05:33And you know what a bug I am on Egyptian culture.
01:05:36Dr. Flanders gave a talk on the ancient Egyptian goddess Ishtar last week.
01:05:41The names Itar and Ishtar were so similar that I got a hunch.
01:05:46And then Suzette told me that a Fuad Ramses was catering their fare.
01:05:52So I called Dr. Flanders and asked him more about the blood festival of Ishtar.
01:05:56He said he knew of a Fuad Ramses who had written a book called The Ancient Weird Religious Rites.
01:06:02And then I remembered.
01:06:04The book we found next to the body of the girl who was killed in the bathtub.
01:06:07It's the same book.
01:06:09Now, obviously, this man kept a list of the people who wrote for this book.
01:06:14So, Frank, who knows if the spell of this monstrous goddess has possessed anyone else.
01:06:22Lust, murder, food for an ancient goddess who received life through the perverted death of others.
01:06:32Let's go home, Frank.
01:07:02The End
