Crashed War Bomber Shows Up In NASA Mission Images

NASA’s Operation IceBridge, now in its 5th year, monitors both Arctic and Antarctic glaciers and ice sheets for changes and anomalies.

Typically, the satellite-equipped plane that flies over the poles picks up a lot of images of pristine, frozen landscapes, but every so often something unexpected pops up.

Such was the case in early May,when shots of a downed American bomber plane began to appear on the screens at the project’s home base.

The B-29 Superfortress named Kee Bird was forced to land in the northwest region of Greenland in 1947 while flying a top secret Cold War mission.

All of the crew members were safely evacuated and eventually rescued, but not before spending three days stranded in the unforgiving environment.

Decades later attempts were made to salvage the bomber, but once it was fixed and preparing for take off another problem arose.

The fuselage suddenly caught fire, forcing the plane to again be evacuated. At that time, the plane was considered to be beyond repair.

Said one NASA worker of the find, "When you spend eight hours a day, five days a week staring at a blinding white ice sheet, something interesting to look at comes as a rather welcome sight."
