Five undeniably cute wolf pups are now being cared for by staffers at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage.

Firefighters are responsible for making the presence of the tiny creatures known. Crews had responded to a wildfire on a recent Tuesday in the Kenai Peninsula.

At approximately 12 in the afternoon, firefighters tackling the flames on the northwest section of the blaze heard yipping sounds. According to Steve Miller, deputy manager of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, the pups' den was located along a bank where a firebreak had been installed just two days prior.

Once the discovery was made, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game was contacted. Staffers there joined Miller to locate the den and rescue the animals.

Upon arrival at the scene, they witnessed one pup walking out of the den. The small animal looked injured and dehydrated.

A firefighter volunteered to crawl into the den to pull out the remaining pups. The four other living animals were also dehydrated and sported pierce markings consistent with porcupine quills. A sixth baby was located but sadly, it had passed away.

The surviving pups were quickly given sugar water to help hydrate them before being transported to the zoo. Keepers are monitoring and nursing the creatures back to health. Staffers plan to find them a nice and suitable home.
