The way that a lot of businesses manage their staff can become a lose-lose situation for both the business and its employees. There are so many little things you can do to improve the performance, efficiency and productivity of the team. That will prevent duplication and mistakes and also increase the profitability and effectiveness of your business.

We find these inefficiencies exist in a lot of small businesses because the staff work as a group of individuals going about doing their own thing rather than working together as a team. Now, the staff might actually like each other. They may get on really well and they may look like they're having a terrific time at work and enjoying it — but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're working together as a team.

Let me show you what I mean.

I want you to imagine that you and your team are all placed inside a big, steel cylinder. And because there isn't really a vision — a clearly communicated direction or goal — what often happens is people head in different directions. This might be you here. You're the boss. You're going in one direction but your team is going in other directions. You can understand, by looking at the diagram, that everyone is using up a lot of energy working hard — but because you're not pushing in the same direction, you're not making much progress at all. You're just using up a lot of energy.
