On October 31 1962, U.N. Secretary General U Thant met Fidel Castro. U Thant negotiated with Castro concerning Major Rudolf Anderson, the U-2 pilot who was shot on Oct. 27. U Thant proved to be successful. Castro agreed to send the dead body back to the United States. Nevertheless, U Thant was not successful in obtaining Castro's approval for any form of inspection of the Soviet missile withdrawal.
