Kick’em Jenny has erupted at least ten times since it was discovered in 1939.
According to one report, the volcano might have posed the threat of creating a tsunami, because of its growing peak getting close to emerging from the water, but when the dome collapsed, it lowered the risk of an eruption that would cause a tsunami. (
Robert Ballard, president of the Ocean Exploration Trust, and the director of the Center for Ocean Exploration at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, famous for discovering the sunken shipwreck of the Titanic, is one of the scientists studying the underwater volcano.
Ballard is quoted as saying: “A lot of the deep sea is sort of like you know you can think of it as a desert. We just found an oasis in that desert. And there’s no reason to stop, there’s 72 percent of the planet hardly explored.”
During one exploration using a submersible, the researchers found life forms inside the volcano.
