Legislation has been introduced to stop United States congress members from using tax payer money to fly in first class, and force the politicians using tax dollars to fly in coach.

Known as the “If Our Military Has to Fly Coach Then so Should Congress Act,” the bill is supported by lawmakers from the left and right who are trying to find ways to balance the US budget.

The bill will put the same restrictions on congress members and their staff that are placed on employees of the White House.

Walter Jones, a Republican representative from North Carolina who supports the bill, said: "As representatives of the American people, we in Congress have a responsibility to wisely use the people’s money. Members of the House and Senate should never secure their own luxury travel at taxpayer expense, but they especially should not do so when our nation is buried 17 trillion dollars deep in debt."

If it passes, the bill will still allow Congress members to fly first class on flights that are longer than five hours, and in special circumstances like people with medical issues, or disabilities.
