Marine investigators find 500-year-old Columbus ship wreck off coast of Haiti

Divers believe they may have found the 500-year-old remains of one of Christopher Columbus’s ships which took part in his famous voyage to the New World.

A team of investigators backed by the History Channel has discovered a shipwreck off the coast of Haiti and suspect it could be that of the Santa Maria.

The ship was one of three vessels which left Spain in 1492 looking for a shorter route to Asia. However after arriving near the Bahamas, it drifted onto a reef and had to be abandoned.

A cannon from the wreck was originally found in 2003 but miss-dated by scientists. Further research now points to it and other objects as coming from the time of Columbus.

Marine investigators now hope to convince other experts of their historic find.
