Meteor Lights Up the Sky Near Toronto
Many people in and around Toronto, Canada reported that they’d seen what looked like a meteor on Sunday, May 4th.
Many people in and around Toronto, Canada reported that they’d seen what looked like a meteor on Sunday, May 4th.
An investigation is underway, but area experts are saying that given the sights and sounds observed, it most likely was one.
Meteors are often referred to as shooting stars and occur when pieces of space debris enter Earth’s atmosphere. Typically, they’re chunks of iron, stone, or both.
Almost immediately after this one fell, people began to post descriptions, photos, and dashcam videos.
It was also characterized as being brighter than lightning and moving very fast.
Some said they didn’t hear or feel anything, while others reported a ‘sonic boom’ and rumbling buildings.
An area university has equipment that tracks meteors, but it wasn’t turned on at the time.
Several microphones that are used by the school did manage to pick up evidence of a shockwave.
Said one of the professors, "The energy is somewhere in the order of a few tens of tons of TNT explosive equivalent. That would translate into something on the order of half to one metre in diameter and that's going to be a mass of .... a few metric tons."
He also said some of its fragments may have landed on the ground.
