NIGERIAN WEB USERS CALL TO END VIOLENCE
A bomb blast in the capital Abuja on Monday that left dozens dead, and the kidnapping of more than 100 school girls in Nigeria`s north-eastern Borno state on Tuesday …there has been no claim of responsibility for the two successive terrorist attacks so far although authorities blame Islamist terror group Boko Haram. This fresh outbreak of violence has become a popular topic for discussion on social networks.
Hundreds of Nigerians have taken to Twitter reacting to these tragic events under the #AbujaBombBlast and #BornoGirls hashtags, with messages of solidarity and condolence for victims and their loved ones. They are also calling for calm, saying the current situation is extremely alarming; some are urging the authorities to declare a state of emergency.
And while many feel powerless to do anything about the violence in Nigeria, a growing number of web users are putting forward suggestions, trying to find ways of tackling terrorism. They have been posting under the #CitizenSolutionToEndTerrorism hashtag, with their thoughts on what the country should do; implement a network of surveillance cameras in big cities for example or set up a citizen militia tasked with assisting Nigeria`s security services.
