Tunisia Launches Effort to Save Star Wars Set

Shifting sand dunes are taking a toll on the Star Wars set in Tunisia, and an international campaign has been launched to help the country save them.

The location was used in the filming of Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and the scenery has been there since the 90s.
The area is a windy one, and its sand dunes get shifted about 15 yards per year.
Over time, that’s led to the covering of about 10 percent of the Star Wars space.
Thousands of cubic meters of sand have already been removed, but unfortunately part of the structure beneath it was crushed.
Efforts to stop the damage from getting worse are expected to cost around 200 thousand dollars, so the area tourism board has partnered with other organizations to raise funds, and hopes to solicit private sponsors and donors.
They’ve also set up a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo with a goal of 45 thousand dollars.
Donations of 25, 100, and 1 thousand dollars are being requested. Each tier earns the giver a different title ranging from Padawan to Master Jedi.
Top-tier givers will also get their names put on a panel that will be placed near the Star Wars site.
